I forget the speaker's name, but he is with this group named Indivisible. I have video of this man speaking at the Tax Day March, also at City Hall, on April 15.

There is a fine art to blurring a photo (or so I say when people laugh at my efforts). Covered Jamaal Magloire's Revellers costume launch last weekend in Don Mills. My camera's light meter was having a nervous breakdown from all the media camera flashes causing the shutter speed to drift sideways into the land of out-of-focus. Can you see the shadow the flashes created on the model's crotch and thigh area - it is the video camera that was almost in my left ear right beside me on the photographers' riser! The second? A really energetic model shakes her head really fast and her pink and blue feathers blurred out her face.

Students’ poppy-painted stones honour our veterans

About 500 Grade 6-8 students from Cedar Hill Middle School walked the short distance to St. Luke’s Cemetery Thursday afternoon to place stones with poppies painted on them at the graves of veterans.

It was the second straight year the school took part in the special No Stone Left Alone event, said principal Maryanne Trofimuk.

At the same time, across the city, Rockheights Middle School students made the trek to God’s Acre Veterans Cemetery to also lay stones.

Military members were on hand for both school groups, and the Saanich police department provided Cedar Hill Middle students a vehicle escort to the cemetery.

Trofimuk said there are 157 veterans’ graves at the St. Luke’s site. Visiting cemeteries helps students understand why Remembrance Day is marked each year, she said.

“It’s an experience,” Trofimuk said. “It’s not sitting in the gym and watching this all on the big screen. This is coming out and really seeing that there are people that have been laid to rest.

“We do talk about the freedoms that we have because of the commitment that soldiers gave during wartime.”

N.B. Photos are from unidentified supporters of the school and the church.

I deliberately framed this so we could see the 5600 degree Kelvin LED lamps used to light Slen and his guest. Technology has gotten smaller and more convenient to use, yet it often yields better results. Gone are the days when on-camera people sweltered under the hot lights. These lights are bright and give enough illumination for a good exposure, but they will not make anyone in front of the camera uncomfortable.

I'm pretty sure I ended up in full view of both cameras, no doubt much to the frustration of the director, who hoped I got what I wanted and moved on, which I did.

Sunday morning we went to St. Luke's Church cemetery to pay our respects to the veterans-of- foreign wars and as a token of our appreciation for the effort, talent and dedication of the 500 students from Cedar Hill Middle School put into painting and disseminating all the painted rocks they created in preparation for this event. The marked graves are of the 157 veterans interred here.

Thanks also to St. Luke's staff and volunteers for preparing all the floral+flags+poppies tributes provided for veterans' graves placement before Armistice Day 2022.

below: Short video of the event —

This is where most of the media were located. The man next to the video camera probably got the kind of shots you would see on the news, showing a medium closeup of Bernie, with that group of supporters on the platform behind him, cheering him. More people showed up with their cameras to get on the platform before the rally began. It became much harder to turn around once the area where I stood became more packed with people.

My little Flip Video camera makes taking video very easy. The best part about the camera is the fact that the movies open with Windows Movie Maker. This allows me to edit the movies.

When I use my Nikon Coolpix S7c to make movies, these movies open with QuickTime. I must first convert the video with Adobe Premier Elements 2.0 and save it as an .avi file. Then I can open the file with Windows Movie Maker.

This Flip Video camera solves this problem. I love my Flip.

In optics, defocus is the aberration in which an image is simply out of focus. This aberration is familiar to anyone who has used a camera, videocamera, microscope, telescope, or binoculars. Optically, defocus refers to a translation along the optical axis away from the plane or surface of best focus. In general, defocus reduces the sharpness and contrast of the image. What should be sharp, high-contrast edges in a scene become gradual transitions. Fine detail in the scene is blurred or even becomes invisible. Nearly all image-forming optical devices incorporate some form of focus adjustment to minimize defocus and maximize image quality.

The degree of image blurring for a given amount of focus shift depends inversely on the lens f-number. Low f-numbers, such as f/1.4 to f/2.8, are very sensitive to defocus and have very shallow depths of focus. High f-numbers, in the f/16 to f/32 range, are highly tolerant of defocus, and consequently have large depths of focus. The limiting case in f-number is the pinhole camera, operating at perhaps f/100 to f/1000, in which case all objects are in focus almost regardless of their distance from the pinhole aperture. The penalty for achieving this extreme depth of focus is very dim illumination at the imaging film or sensor, limited resolution due to diffraction, and very long exposure time, which introduces the potential for image degradation due to motion blur.

The amount of allowable defocus is related to the resolution of the imaging medium. A lower-resolution imaging chip or film is more tolerant of defocus and other aberrations. To take full advantage of a higher resolution medium, defocus and other aberrations must be minimized.

Defocus is modeled in Zernike polynomial format as , where is the defocus coefficient in wavelengths of light. This corresponds to the parabola-shaped optical path difference between two spherical wavefronts that are tangent at their vertices and have different radii of curvature.

For some applications, such as phase contrast electron microscopy, defocused images can contain useful information. Multiple images recorded with various values of defocus can be used to examine how the intensity of the electron wave varies in three dimensional space, and from this information the phase of the wave can be inferred. This is the basis of non-interferometric phase retrieval. Examples of phase retrieval algorithms that utilise defocused images include the Gerchberg–Saxton algorithm and various methods based on the transport of intensity equation.

Thursday I drove to St. Luke's Church Cemetery to look things over.

Our volunteer coordinator sent out a message yesterday announcing the next cleanup day at the site.

Next week will be when the Remembrance Day 2023 ceremony preparations will be carried out.

These volunteers will include persons affiliated with the church, students and military personnel.

All this is an annual event throughout the city. Lest We Forget.

The woman that held the sign regarding a woman's place is in the revolution was being interviewed by a stringer crew -- in this case, Rueters. I didn't have the time to catch her name, nor did I have the time to listen in on what she had to say. If anyone did catch this interview on-line, please put the link in the comments section.

You are greeted with this as you walk through the front door at The Boring Store, 826CHI's Chicago spy shop. This picture reminds me of something from LOST.

So much to say about this amazing place, more pictures and information to come. But for now, it is definitely not a secret agent supply store.
