The day after our hot air balloon flight, it became very sunny and hot! It was the start of a heat wave untill Saturday!

So, it was nice weather to take some pictures on several places in the valley of the river Elbe. The first train that I could take from the parking garage 'Am Steinplatz' in Pirna, was this EC 'Hungaria' from Budapest to Hamburg. You can see here the video of this train!

After 7 months of buying no gadgets whatsoever, I treated myself to the new iPod nano with video camera. This is the 16GB model.

Transits of Io and Europa across the disk of Jupiter on 6/26/2017. Imaged at several exposure levels with a Skyris videocamera and a Celestron Nexstar C8 with a 2x Barlow lens attached.

Much post-processing was required to compensate for the hazy summer suburban Philadelphia sky and Jupiter not being especially close to Earth. An 8" telescope is also probably at the edge of being capable of resolving these features.

Processing Approach:

Raw video was stacked and wavelet-processed in Registax. The three best stacked/wavelet-processed images were further stacked in Photoshop Elements using layer masks to highlight the best parts of each sub. The composite was then taken into Lightroom to fine-tune colors and exposure, plus another sub was created using significant black clipping to accentuate the moons at the expense of the background disk of Jupiter. The adjusted composite and black-clipped moon sub were taken back to Elements to stack with masks. Finally, the "HDR" composite was taken back to Lightroom for the last tweaks on color/exposure to yield the final image.

Today, I was digging through my old home videos since my fiancee wanted to know if I still had my "Outsiders" high school theater performance. I did. But... I kept watching all the other footage. I found old wrestling highlights, random "short films" I made of my RC cars, and even a stop motion animation of a Lego minifig. Looks like I haven't changed one bit, haha.

Well before the march began, different media outlets, whether they were major or someone's video blog or for their podcast for YouTube, people were out with cameras and microphones, getting interviews and talking heads with some of the women participating in this event. I couldn't tell what was being said, because it was noisy. Besides the crowd, there was loud music coming from two sources: one being the Revcom.com people, and the other being from other groups at the corner of Pershing Square. It would be interesting to see if this woman's comments are clear enough without too much background noise.

What a lucky spot: this guy was taking GoPro selfies as he jumped into the sea. If only I'd thought to swap email addresses! I'd love to see his footage.

The Discovery Channel film crew were on Calton Hill, Edinburgh, capturing video of a cruise ship in the Firth of Forth for a coming documentary on new ships. We were about a mile away from the Forth with with a nice view of the ship at over 300 feet of elevation. They were very nice to talk with me in the middle of their setup process.

This TV presenter, who spoke a language I didn't recognise, looks like he doesn't really want to be covering the royal wedding. The cameraman just stood there, waiting patiently.

I switched from my 75-300mm lens to my 18-55mm lens to grab this image of Joseline Garcia. She is, of course, a survivor of the UC Santa Barbara shootings of several years ago.

The news photographer was getting B-roll footage of the spectators, including myself, for his story of the rally and subsequent march. You can also see now that these speeches were given from the bed of a large truck.
