I switched from my 75-300mm lens to my 18-55mm lens to grab this image of Joseline Garcia. She is, of course, a survivor of the UC Santa Barbara shootings of several years ago.
The news photographer was getting B-roll footage of the spectators, including myself, for his story of the rally and subsequent march. You can also see now that these speeches were given from the bed of a large truck.
You can see the video of the march by clicking on the link below to my YouTube channel:

In response to the Congressional budget debacle which proved that DC is but a colony -- prone to being singled out unlike any other city in the country -- a number of activists, elected officials, and general citizens came out in force upon the grounds of Capitol Hill.
The crowd first formed on the sidewalk, but after some opening remarks by elected officials and activists: they quickly spilled into the street. The Capitol Police had been on hand & I'd thought it amusing that a couple were taking photos & videos... it wasn't until I saw the wristbands come out when I realised these weren't officers enjoying the moment; they were recording evidence.
With many minutes of warning, large portions of the group shifted over the sidewalk; whilst a core of dedicated supporters -- including our Mayor, a number of councilmembers, and members of DC Vote -- remained behind to block the roadway. The officers began to surround the group & repeated their warnings to get back on the sidewalk or face arrest.
Now in all fairness to the Capitol Police: they were doing their job. They were quite courteous about it & the protest was similarly jubilant right back. One woman was first to be bound, soon followed by several other activists. Then came Muriel Bowser: first councilmember to be arrested.
In general, I tend to dislike political grandstanding... but this was different. If our council was being arrested by our own police, I'd think it a cheesy photo op... but now our locally-elected officials were being arrested by the very forces we were out to protest: the Feds. This wasn't a mere photo op arrest; this was actually a legitimate arrest... the kind of thing that goes on your record; the kind of thing you spent a night in jail for.
Now granted, I don't expect anyone will be in jail longer than tomorrow; I'd be surprised if any were still locked up by midnight tonight. But it was Councilmember Bowser's arrest which really hit a moment... you could see the look on her face was of some worried concern: someone who had never been arrested before & didn't show up here today expecting to be arrested. As she was placed into the police van: her look of concern changed to a bit more worry. I mean this as no knock against Councilmember Bowser's committment; rather I felt it really help to humanise the entire event. It made me respect her all the more.
Yvette Alexander stood right beside us for quite some time, complicated in that she didn't have her ID on her. While it was entertaining to see our top officials being frisked, it was also quite entertaining that our easily-recognisable councilmember needed her ID... prompting a standerby to call one of her staffers with the best introduction I've ever heard over a phone: "Hi, your councilmember has been arrested." Also, kudos to Councilmember Alexander for going to jail in high heels!
There is a lot I can complain about with the council in general; and certainly with individual councilmembers & even the mayor. Heck, that's what politicians are for: you're not supposed to always like them. But this was an opportunity to set aside some of those issues (frankly, I'd say DC was glad to have a unifying moment after the past couple weeks) and cheer on our own brothers & sisters as they stood up in support of our rights.
It was certainly a proud moment to be a DC resident and a fine boost to our collective esteem after several weeks of turmoil within our local & federal levels of government. It's aggravating that my support for small & local government is inhibited by those in Congress whom advocate small & local government. If I wanted to live in a colony, I'd have moved to Williamsburg.
Here’s my brother’s quadcopter with a Go Pro Hero 2 temporarily mounted on top of it. The camera and mount added around 235g (~ 8.3oz) to the quad making it top heavy and hard to fly. But my brother managed to fly it well. Here we are testing out the front of my house before we went for a drive to a nearby oval.

Violin Recital - Austin, TX
I recently went to a my son's violin recital. Someone in the audience was using their iPad 2 as a video camera. The changing face of technology. The 6 year old girl had the smallest violin that I've ever seen. Very cute.

My friend Greg was in Charlotte as well (recall the Riverfront Park photos). He had the whole works set up again, ready to get video photos of people, to be processed through his computer and printed out (on the machine in the foreground) to be put on t-shirts, mostly. Here, two children were posing for Greg, probably for a t-shirt for themselves or their parents. Or, it might have been for a calendar, since Greg could do those as well. Keep in mind this is 1980, and doing this sort of thing was not easy, and it was expensive, and the equipment was cumbersome to move around from place to place. I wonder if these kids (thirty-six years older now) still have the photo Greg took of them? If not, maybe they will be lucky enough to stumble upon my photograph here.
This was shot on Eastman Kodak 5247 Motion Picture Stock, rated at ASA 100. I used the Vivitar 400/SL camera, with the Vivitar 28mm wide angle lens. I also used a Vivitar No. 85 filter instead of letting the lab (RGB in Hollywood) do the correction on the subsequent slides printed. It worked better that way when it came time to scan the negative, otherwise it would have looked too blue and I would have had my work cut out for me correcting it on Photoshop. I had to do enough tweaking as it is.
I got back from Indianapolis today, and am totallyyyyy exhausted. And had no creative ideas in my mind whatsoever for my 365. So this is what emerged. Haha.
When we were in the elevator on the way to check out of our hotel, there was my mom, my step dad, and I in the elevator, along with about 6 other people crammed in there. Then this grown man just randomly yells, "WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!!!!!!!" As the elevator was going down. I so wish I had a videocamera then.

Riffy's been acting really strange lately so I followed her. I found a note that said "Deep Oil 3:00 pm" so I had no choice but to find out what it meant.

I forget the speaker's name, but he is with this group named Indivisible. I have video of this man speaking at the Tax Day March, also at City Hall, on April 15.
There is a fine art to blurring a photo (or so I say when people laugh at my efforts). Covered Jamaal Magloire's Revellers costume launch last weekend in Don Mills. My camera's light meter was having a nervous breakdown from all the media camera flashes causing the shutter speed to drift sideways into the land of out-of-focus. Can you see the shadow the flashes created on the model's crotch and thigh area - it is the video camera that was almost in my left ear right beside me on the photographers' riser! The second? A really energetic model shakes her head really fast and her pink and blue feathers blurred out her face.

Students’ poppy-painted stones honour our veterans
About 500 Grade 6-8 students from Cedar Hill Middle School walked the short distance to St. Luke’s Cemetery Thursday afternoon to place stones with poppies painted on them at the graves of veterans.
It was the second straight year the school took part in the special No Stone Left Alone event, said principal Maryanne Trofimuk.
At the same time, across the city, Rockheights Middle School students made the trek to God’s Acre Veterans Cemetery to also lay stones.
Military members were on hand for both school groups, and the Saanich police department provided Cedar Hill Middle students a vehicle escort to the cemetery.
Trofimuk said there are 157 veterans’ graves at the St. Luke’s site. Visiting cemeteries helps students understand why Remembrance Day is marked each year, she said.
“It’s an experience,” Trofimuk said. “It’s not sitting in the gym and watching this all on the big screen. This is coming out and really seeing that there are people that have been laid to rest.
“We do talk about the freedoms that we have because of the commitment that soldiers gave during wartime.”
N.B. Photos are from unidentified supporters of the school and the church.
