My friends surprised me, they invited me to a magnificent restaurant with a view of the Colosseum, but when I arrived instead, my Flickr Friend Birgit, who had organized everything, was waiting for me. She took advantage of the warm days☀️ at this time of year (in fact it feels like spring), and left the cold to come and visit me... clearly it's just a fantasy,... nowadays with A.I. you can virtually make any😄 beautiful fantasy come true.

Milky Way season is almost over for the year, so I went out to Wivenhoe Dam west of Brisbane last night to capture this timelapse of it setting in the west.
At a recent joint meeting of the entities who are working to bring back the endangered Whooping Crane from the brink of extinction, it was decided to end the fifteen-year program called Operation Migration. This was supposed to be their next to last flight, but nature didn't cooperate for the last leg, and they were transported instead of following the ultralight that one last time.
This video was digiscoped using manual focus.

A few weeks ago I looked out the window to see the first Red-bellied Woodpecker I've ever seen in our water feature. As I watched, a Northern Flicker joined her! I've wanted to get a good photo of a Flicker for years, but it has eluded me.
I started going out in my blind every afternoon, but I soon realized that getting even a quick photo of the Flicker wasn't going to be easy. The first time I saw him I was sitting well back in the darkness of my blind, and he landed just over the bush that provides cover next to the water. I move about 2" forward toward the camera, and he was gone. On the days that followed as soon as I would hear him in the distance, I would get behind the camera and do my best not to move at all. Finally one afternoon he landed on a stick in the shadows behind the water, in front of our field of yellow daisies. He dropped to the water after about 10 seconds, and I had to pan painfully slowly down to where he'd landed so as not to frighten him with the movement of the camera. I silently mouthed "Don't leave! Don't leave!" during what seemed like forever to pan to him in the water.
I think that the extreme drought is only reason we have had woodpeckers at the water, and that it hadn't rained in so long that all of their knot holes and other water sources had finally dried up. It rained yesterday, so it will be interesting to see if either species returns to the water - I can only hope they do.

It takes sensitivity and keen instinct to fly a glider. The movements are always very delicate, as well as the aircraft's reactions. The instrument panel has only basic aviation instruments: compass, speedometers, altimeter, ascent and descent rate indicator and a crucial item for gliders, a kind of updraft detector (Airspeed Indicator) and the intensity of these phenomena.
Control of the aircraft is by lever and pedals and the only extra command is the lever to activate the wing deflectors, which act as aerodynamic brakes to reduce speed. The glider has only one electronic device: the radio.
Designed for long flights, which can take three hours or more, the interior of the glider is very comfortable. The seat accommodates the whole body and ventilation is not a problem: there is an air duct right next to the seat and small windows that can be opened during the flight.
Vultures are also a good “tool” in sailing. The huge birds have a special “sense” for finding updrafts, which take them to high altitudes without even needing to flap their wings. Therefore, where there is a vulture there is a great chance of finding a thermal where the glider can gain altitude.

Wait for it...and turn on the sound.
It's amazing how its head stays so still while it flies around. If you look closely you can also see its little tongue going in and out and the feathers on the back of its head being blown around by the wind from its flapping wings. I love the moment when normal speed slows down and the sound of its chirping and flapping wings also slows down.

Mother Nature is a magical thing, being able to witness this mom nursing her kits was a great moment. This was taken earlier this year, what I like about the video is that mom did not give me the time of day. She was eating and nursing at the same time, not giving me a second look.
I'm happy she had enough space to be her, be wild and take care of the new generation.

Some shots you plan, and some take you completely by surprise - this was definitely one of the latter! I'd been videoing bathing birds, and looked up to see this gorgeous Summer Tanager standing on the highest rock - I think displaying for a female, but I never saw her. When he flew from the cedar, just seconds after the whole scene began, I couldn't believe what I'd captured and have been looking forward to sharing it ever since!
