Watch this juvie Pileated Woodpecker forage for food then give up and call for a parent. The parent is on the same tree near their chick. Pileated chicks go thru several stages of maturity before fully reaching adulthood. Chicks follow the parents around to learn how to forage. They have a short attention span and get tired easily. Notice the color difference of the adult's crown and its chick. So dang cute!
There were several chicks of varying ages about in the Wenatchee Lake Forest today.
My camera was at the ready when our train stopped for the loco to take on water from the Animas River on the Durango And Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, from Durango to Silverton, Colorado.
The route is an unforgettable journey along the spectacular Animas River. The Animas River is one of the last free-flowing rivers in the entire western United States. The river rises high in the San Juan Mountains and ends in a confluence with the San Juan River in New Mexico; it boasts some of Colorado's most striking canyon scenery; fond memories.
A cockatoo is any of the 21 parrot species belonging to the family Cacatuidae, the only family in the superfamily Cacatuoidea. Along with the Psittacoidea (true parrots) and the Strigopoidea (large New Zealand parrots), they make up the order Psittaciformes. The family has a mainly Australasian distribution, ranging from the Philippines and the eastern Indonesian islands of Wallacea to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Australia. Cockatoos are recognisable by the prominent crests and curved bills. Their plumage is generally less colourful than that of other parrots, being mainly white, grey or black and often with coloured features in the crest, cheeks or tail. On average they are larger than other parrots; however, the cockatiel, the smallest cockatoo species, is a small bird. Cockatoos prefer to eat seeds, tubers, corms, fruit, flowers and insects. They often feed in large flocks, particularly when ground-feeding. Cockatoos are monogamous and nest in tree hollows. Some cockatoo species have been adversely affected by habitat loss, particularly from a shortage of suitable nesting hollows after large mature trees are cleared; conversely, some species have adapted well to human changes and are considered agricultural pests. Khone Phapheng Waterfalls of the Mekong located just to the north of the Laos - Cambodia border. A supplement to the "Trip to Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia 2024."
It may be a rapid rather than a waterfall, but the volume of water was overwhelming. It is one of the waterfalls located at the southern end of Si Phan Dong.

Fun facts: echidnas lay a soft egg which they put into a fold on its abdomen (a pouch). When it hatches a baby echidna is called a puggle and is carried in the mother's pouch about 45 days.

The Australian magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) is a medium-sized black and white passerine bird native to Australia and southern New Guinea. Although once considered to be three separate species, it is now considered to be one, with nine recognised subspecies. A member of the Artamidae, the Australian magpie is placed in its own genus and is most closely related to the black butcherbird (Melloria quoyi). Currawongs have yellow eyes, whereas Magpies have red-brown eyes and Butcherbirds have very dark brown, almost black eyes. It is not, however, closely related to the European magpie, which is a corvid. The adult Australian magpie is a fairly robust bird ranging from 37 to 43 cm in length, with distinctive black and white plumage, gold brown eyes and a solid wedge-shaped bluish-white and black bill. The male and female are similar in appearance, and can be distinguished by differences in back markings. The male has pure white feathers on the back of the head and the female has white blending to grey feathers on the back of the head. With its long legs, the Australian magpie walks rather than waddles or hops and spends much time on the ground. Described as one of Australia's most accomplished songbirds, the Australian magpie has an array of complex vocalisations. It is omnivorous, with the bulk of its varied diet made up of invertebrates. It is generally sedentary and territorial throughout its range. Common and widespread, it has adapted well to human habitation and is a familiar bird of parks, gardens and farmland in Australia and New Guinea. This species is commonly fed by households around the country, but in spring (and occasionally in autumn) a small minority of breeding magpies (almost always males) become aggressive and swoop and attack those who approach their nests.
