My Vinegar Collection (and hiding in the background, Marsala and dry Sherry, also used in cooking). Most of my vinegars are from David Rosengarten's Real Vinegar Club. www.davidrosengarten.com/content.asp?type=site&id=166
When it comes to cooking, vinegar has more jobs to do than just appearing as an ingredient in recipes. It can improve flavor, preserve food, fill in for missing ingredients, and even make food look better. This ingredient can prevent spoilage and salvage the occasional cooking disaster. In fact, if you add a drop here and there during the preparation process, vinegar may change the whole personality of certain foods.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Acton, London*. Here are the details of the project
Brief: The plot for this design was a mid-size family garden, which had recently benefited from the addition of a large sunroom on the back of the property. It was a fairly blank canvas, with nothing of note to be retained in the re-design. The garden had side access and worn boundary fences which required replacing. There was no clear brief other than that the design include a seating area and some lawn, and that the transition from sunroom to garden be fairly seamless.
Solution: The focus of this design was to create an exterior space that serves as an extension to the interior, featuring several distinct and versatile areas that can be adapted to a variety of uses.
The garden's boundaries were replaced with new fencing to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the transformation within, while the long sideway down the right of the house was renovated with the addition of attractive 'bamboo' slate tile flooring in a random lay pattern.
The first section of the space comprises a large area of Western Red Cedar decking adjoining the house, and offers ample room for entertaining, with a long L-shaped fixed-bench seat stretching width-ways across the space from the left-hand side to the centre. This was backed with a rendered block raised bed, planted with fragrant lavender and capped with 'bamboo' slate tile, to provide a sense of enclosure and separation from the rest of the garden.
A decked walkway running down the right hand side of the space provides access to a 'spa' area, featuring a large square hot tub housed upon a reinforced paved hard-standing and nestled between existing and additional trees, shrubs and foliage to provide a secluded and intimate area for bathing throughout the seasons. Hidden behind mature and new planting in the bottom left corner, a large shed provides ample storage for the client's garden accessories. The middle of the space has been given over to a large lawn edges with slate.
A purple and yellow planting scheme of soft, cottage-style evergreen shrubs and flowering perennials will help to bring year round lightness and subtle colouring to the space.
After-dark hot tub bathing is enhanced by several strings of pea-lights woven through the existing shrubbery. Deck lights demark the main area of decking and guide one's journey along the decked walkway. Finally, spot lights in the beds highlight certain area while providing a gentle wash throughout the space.
Testimonial: "After months of planning and a full year of having builders everywhere, we had finally got the house into good shape but the garden was a nightmare. It had been somewhat overgrown before the builders moved in, but after a year of being used as a builders yard, it needed shock treatment.
We needed help fast so we searched the web. We were looking for garden designers with creative ideas for smaller London gardens. We didn't want anything too traditional but at the same time, nothing too extreme.
Earth Designs fitted the bill and after a design session with Katrina, we engaged them for the project. They had offered us a design service only, but as we only had a 4 week window in which to complete the job, we gave them the whole project.
We had built a new extension with wide glass doors that opened out into the garden, so the brief to Earth Designs was to "bring the outside, inside" and create a strong link between the new room and the garden beyond. The actual garden space was not large so we wanted to use the space as an extension of the living space - to be an "outside room".
Monday 18th April and three very charming men arrived on our doorstep at 8.0am sharp. Arlo was the project manager, ably aided and abetted by Paul and Phillip. They worked brilliantly as a team and always hit all the deadlines. In particular they did a great job in working with our neighbours to ensure the whole project ran smoothly.
The first week involved clearing the site - no mean feat with 30-year-old ivy stems that looked more like tree trunks.
The second week involved levelling the garden, putting up new fencing, building the corner seating base and planters, plus marking out the garden shape. It was good to be able to make minor changes to the design on the ground at this stage. The hot tub arrived too and was winched into place for connection later.
Week 3 saw the decking and seating built.
Then in week four the turf arrived, the lawn went down and on the last day, Katrina arrived with a truckload of wonderful specimens (and Matt) and we had a wonderful time planting. Ground Force Mk II - a complete garden from start to finish in just 4 weeks!
There were a few things that needed to be sorted out after the main work was complete. Earth Designs were great about coming back until all was complete and finished.
Our thanks to Katrina, Matt, Arlo, Paul and Phillip for a great job, completed on time and on budget with a great looking result."

Roadside Attraction is a versatile new work housed in and around a vintage Seventies-era pop-up camper that has been retro-fitted to become the stage and setting for a new dance/theater performance
Designed to be shown virtually anywhere, indoors or out, Roadside Attraction is a family vacation that steps back in time to when Supertramp was on the radio, Connect Four was on the folding table and frisky business was in the bunks. Mom’s red Candies clapped from the camper’s linoleum kitchen window before she emerged in her cheetah print bathing suit with matching blanket, her platinum wig blowing in the breeze.
Exploring expectations, acceptance, and the excruciating but illuminating identification with family role models, Roadside Attraction is a slice of nostalgic Americana, replete with lawn chairs, a picnic table, and all the trappings of a family that has been together on a road trip for far, far too long.
The work centers around the Mother, who dreams of a life beyond the hum-drum of suburban, middle-American family life. Her fantasies come alive in the form of an avatar, a glamorous, fabulous projection of herself who gets to do everything Mom only dreams of, from rekindling a failing relationship with Dad, to ogling her daughter's strapping young boyfriend. The resulting movement sequences careen over and through the camper and campsite, sparking unrequited desires that sometimes unravel into tender reconciliations. Quirky, humorous, and heartbreaking, the work skips between bubbles of pop music woven into a through-composed original score.
As a performance, Roadside Attraction is a dance/theater piece for eight performers that incorporates the intimate, quirky, stunning and startling choreographic sensibility that is the hallmark of Third Rail’s critically acclaimed dance/theater work. Directed and Choreographed by Jennine Willett, with Tom Pearson and Zach Morris, and created in collaboration with the company. Performers include: Elizabeth Carena, Rebekah Morin, Tara O'Con, Tori Sparks, Niko Tsocanos, and Carlton Cyrus Ward. Original music composition by Sean Hagerty, with Isaiah Singer and Elizabeth Carena, played live.

The Volvo V70 is a versatile car. The V in V70 stands for versatile (S70 = saloon, C70 = Coupe).
Here the load carrying capabilities of a V70 are demonstrated. I am taking an internal door (see a previous photo) to the local paint strippers premises.
For loads that are longer than will fit in the load area the seats can be folded.
The rear passenger seat squabs (the bottom part of the seat) can be lifted to form a small bulkhead, then the remaining seat back is folded down. This forms a completely flat area from the tailgate to this newly created bulkhead.
For longer loads, the front passengers seat has two catches on the rear that allow the seat back to be folded forward. If required the rear seat squabs can also be removed, thus removing the bulkhead.
In this way a nearly 2 metre long house door can be loaded into the car, the tailgate can be closed, there is no obstruction to the cars controls or view out of the windows.
Oh, and I nearly forgot...
Fold everything back into place and you have a 5 seater, with capacity for an extra 2 in the load area - a seat folds out from the floor to form a rear facing double seat suitable for children. Thats what the two rear most seatbelts are for. This is a factory fitted option.
There is also an integrated booster seat located in the centre position of the rear seat. It is to be used by children who weigh between 15 and 36 kg and are between 97 and 137cm in height. It should not be used by children less than 3 years old
I don't believe there are many cars that are so versatile in this respect.

Dutch actor Willem Nijholt (1934) is also a dancer and singer. His versatility led him to work in musicals, TV shows, stage plays, cabaret and several films. In recent years he has become known as a TV juror and author.
Willem Adrianus Nijholt was born in Gombong, Kedoe, the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) in 1934. He was the son of Jan Nijholt, a KNIL instructor, and Willemina Sophia Maria Arntz. At age eight he ended up in a Japanese POW camp, which left a deep scar for the rest of his life. At fourteen, he saw his father again, who was sent to work on the Burma Railway by the Japanese. After World War II, the family left the Dutch East Indies and settled in Millingen, the birthplace of his mother. Nijholt attended temporarily HBS (Higher Civic School) in Nijmegen, was briefly in the Navy and went to study at the school for dramatic arts in Amsterdam at age 23. His ill mother died in 1959, before she could see him performing on stage. He fell in love with the author Gerard Reve, who rejected him, but in 1962 he played a role in Reve’s play Commissaris Fennedy/ Commissioner Fennedy. His letters to Reve are published in the book Met Niets Begonnen (Started With Nothing). He made his screen debut in the TV film De huzaren/The Hussars (Walter van der Kamp, 1960). In 1964 he performed the role of Hoofd Piet (Head Pete) once during the national arrival of Sinterklaas in Hoorn. In 1968 he appeared in the popular satirical TV Show Hadimassa. He became very popular among children with his part in the innovative TV show Oebele (Bram van Erkel, 1968-1972) with Wieteke van Dort. He made his film debut in Daniel (Erik Terpstra, 1971) with Peter Schaapman.
In the 1970s, Willem Nijholt had his definitive breakthrough. On stage he worked with Wim Sonneveld in a successful cabaret show in 1971. In 1974 he played Theo Oudijck in the popular TV series De stille kracht/The Silent Force (Walter van der Kamp, 1974), with Pleuni Touw. Their nude scene was a big sensation. He also played Ben van Rooyen in the youth series De Kris Pusaka/The Kris Pusaka (Bram van Erkel, 1977). Nijholt starred in several stage musicals, including Wat een planeet (What a planet; 1973) and Foxtrot (1977), written by Annie MG Schmidt. In 1977 he was awarded the Johan Kaartprijs (Johan Kaart Award). In 1981 he played a voice teacher in the play Children of a Lesser God. He was asked to play this role also in London, but he did not accept the offer. He played roles in Dutch films like the box office hit Ciske de Rat (Guido Pieters, 1984) with Danny de Munk, and Havinck (Frans Weisz, 1987) in which he played the title character. Chip Douglas at IMDb: “Nijholt, at age 50, was ten years too old. But director Frans Weisz, screen testing countless leading men opposite (debutant Anne Martien) Lousberg, still wanted Nijholt to read with her, because he had a feeling Willem could bring out the best in Anne Martien. The young actress obviously felt the same way, because she decided there and then that Nijholt was the one to play her father. He ended up winning the coveted 'Golden Calf' award (the Dutch equivalent of the Academy Award) for his efforts.” In 1989 he played the lead role in the short film Alaska, Mike van Diem’s graduation film at the Dutch Film and Television Academy. The film won a Golden Calf and a Student Academy Award. In 1989, Nijholt played the Master of Ceremonies in the musical Cabaret (1989). That year, he received from Guido de Moor the prestigious Paul Steenbergen medal, which he passed on in 2002 to actor Pierre Bokma.
Willem Nijholt played part in the acclaimed TV series Bij nader inzien/On closer inspection (Frans Weisz, 1991) and Op afbetaling (Frans Weisz, 1993) with Renée Soutendijk. He also continued to appear regularly in Dutch films. He played Etienne in the Harry Mulisch adaptation Hoogste Tijd/The Last Call (Frans Weisz, 1995) starring Rijk de Gooijer. He appeared with Helmut Berger and Udo Kier in Unter den Palmen (Miriam Kruishoop, 1999) and reunited with Pleuni Touw in De vriendschap/The friendship (Nouchka van Brakel, 2001). He appeared in several family films, including Pietje Bell/Peter Bell (Maria Peters, 2002), Pietje Bell 2: De Jacht op de Tsarenkroon/Peter Bell II: The Hunt for the Czar Crown (Maria Peters, 2003) and De Griezelbus/The Horror Bus (Pieter Kuijpers, 2005). Nijholt enjoyed a massive success when he played the controller in the Dutch edition of the stage musical Miss Saigon (1996). Another great musical role was Fagin in Oliver! (1999-2000). In 2002 he retired from the musical and in 2004 he played his last stage role. In 1999 Willem Nijholt was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. In the television talent show Op zoek naar ... (2007-2011; Looking for Evita, Looking for Joseph, Looking for Mary Poppins and Looking for Zorro), Nijholt was the juror. Since 2011 he is a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. His most recent screen role was in the TV crime series Penoza II (Diederik Van Rooijen, 2012-2013), starring Monic Hendrickx.

This photo shows some of the many ways in which stages can be used. They can be built as low as 3 inches and up to ten feet high and beyond.
The multi-level feature allows stages to be used as bleachers.
The angled stage makes possible 45 degree catwalks. An "X" can be created which would attach to an existing stage. Models/Actors could then move from the main stage out into the audience area and back.
Auditorium stage too small for a large performance? This type of stage can be built to any height so it will match the existing stage...problem solved ! It can even be built over auditorium seating.

An NHS Aberdeen renal consultant has won the prestigious 21st Golden Spurtle™ World Porridge Making Championships in the Highland village of Carrbridge in the Cairngorms.
Dr Izhar Khan, who was competing in the competition for the second time, is a firm believer in the health benefits of porridge and is keen to extol these benefits to his patients.
The delighted Dr Khan said: “I achieved my aim to win and take the Golden Spurtle to the Granite City. I started eating porridge seven years ago. It is simple, versatile, healthy and very affordable.”
“I am traditional by nature and like the ritual of making porridge. It sets you up for the day.”
A winning bowl of porridge is testament to the cook’s spurtle, the essential porridge making tool, and Dr Khan explained that he was grateful to one of his patients, who crafted his spurtle for him. So fond is he of his daily oatmeal dish, Dr Khan takes his oatmeal with him when he goes on holiday. With a hectic schedule, Dr Khan makes porridge for his family at the weekend, with his wife Nino, owner of successful curry sauce business `Nino’s Masala` cooking the dish during the week.

Speciality Winners Chris Young & Christina Conte – Photo: Fergus Thom. Click for full resolution (free media use)
The Speciality dish, which has to contain oatmeal combined with other ingredients, was shared by two worthy winners, the first time this has happened during the competition’s 21 years. Judges could not decide between Fife man Chris Young’s wild mushroom risotto dish and California based Christina Conte’s sticky toffee porridge, so awarded the prize to both.
Christina, a Scottish Italian food blogger based in Los Angeles said: “It tasted good when I made it in America, but I knew it would be even better made with Scottish products”
Of his risotto dish, Chris, co-founder of the Handmade Oatcake Company explained: “Risotto is one of my favourite recipes and is so flexible. I just substituted the rice for pinhead oatmeal in the recipe.”
Every 21st birthday is special, and this year, to celebrate the competition’s 21st anniversary, several of the past champions returned for a special ‘Porridge Masters’ event. This was won by Jean Dewar, winner of the Golden Spurtle in 2002 and 2003. Jean, formerly of Aberfeldy Watermill, said she was very pleased to know that she had not lost her touch when it came to making the perfect bowl of porridge.
Alan Meikle, Managing Director of the main sponsor, Hamlyns of Scotland said “This has once again been a hotly contested competition, and it’s great to see such an interest from far and wide in one of Scotland’s most traditional dishes.
“Of course we’re absolutely delighted that Dr Izhar Khan used Hamlyn’s Oatmeal as the basis of his winning porridge.”
Event co-ordinator Margarete Paschke said “My congratulations go to winner Dr Khan. Every year is different, and I am delighted that the judges awarded the Speciality to two contestants – it really was a competition of differing tastes.”
Other competitors included reigning champ John Boa from Strathglass, a chef and owner of a porridge bar in Copenhagen; a grain miller and Sweden’s Nordic Porridge Making Champion and an astrophysics student with the formula for cooking porridge.
BBC World Service announcer Fiona MacDonald was Master of Ceremonies for the Day. The expert porridge judging panel was headed by Neil Mugg, Gleneagles Hotel Head Pastry Chef and Masterchef Colin Bussey who has 33 years experience in the food industry including working at The Savoy and Gleneagles. To support those missions the plane can carry torpedoes, depth charges, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, sonobuoys, search and rescue kits, and other equipment.
The Poseidon’s design is based on the Boeing 737-800ERX. The Poseidon first flew in 2009 and entered service with the U.S. Navy in 2013. It replaces the venerable Lockheed P-3 Orion. Multiple countries are deploying the Poseidon. Great Britain will take delivery in 2019. Members of the Royal Air Force are training with the aircraft and were conducting tours of this aircraft.
In 1918, Great Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) was founded, making it the first independent air force in the world. To celebrate the RAF’s 100th anniversary, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum hosted The Great British Fly-In at its the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. The event included historic and modern aircraft and other vehicles, reenactors, lectures, and performances. Not all aircraft planned for the event were able to participate. Planes that did participate included a Lancaster, a B-25 Mitchell, and a Boeing P-8 Poseidon.

Following the successive launches of Logan, Sandero and Duster, Dacia has further extended its range with the introduction of Lodgy. This new MPV targets families who have traditionally bought used cars but who are interested in stepping up to a new, versatile vehicle at an affordable price.
Lodgy is exceptionally functional and boasts a particularly roomy cabin which seats up to seven people. Standing at 4.50 metres in length, it is a C-segment
MPV for the price of a B-segment MPV.
Lodgy heralds the arrival of a new generation of Dacia vehicles which will continue to feature all the brand’s hallmark strengths. Its exterior lines mirror the quality and robustness of its production, as well as its spacious interior.
