A classic example of versatility, flexibility and ingenuity; a philosophy known disparagingly these days as 'parts-bin manufacture'.

A powerful and versatile fighter/bomber introduced in 1941, the Focke Wulf 190 was with the Messerschmitt Bf 109 the backbone of the German Luftwaffe during WWII.

After his previous design was rejected, Kurt Tank decided on a new design integrating the powerful twin-row BMW 801 radial engine and a massive propeller spinner the size of the engine: this would allow improved air cooling without sacrificing speed or maneuverability. As the German government was worried that the Bf-109 would soon become outclassed and the inline-powered Bf 109 engine became a limiting resource, the Focke Wulf 190 was accepted.

Introduced in France in August 1941 the Focke Wulf quickly achieved dominance over the RAF, proving a superior fighter in firepower, rate of roll, and straight-line speed at low altitude to the main RAF fighter, the Spitfire Mk. V variant. The Channel Dash and the Dieppe Raid would have the Focke Wulf inflict the loss of 74 while suffering the loss of 29 fighters. It would take nearly a year for the Spitfire Mk. IX for Allied fighters to return to parity. Fighter-bomber raids in Southern England were less successful.

Focke Wulfs also preformed well in the Defense of the Reich, inflicting heavy casualties on Allied bombers, though this ebbed and flowed more due to changes in tactics between Allied attacks and Axis responses. The planes preformed well in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. By the Invasion of Normandy in 1944 Focke Wulfs on the Western Front were returned to bombing roles due to the lack of specialized ground attack aircraft. With Allied fighters nearing air superiority, the planes suffered 616 losses while claiming to inflict 526 Allied losses.

Perhaps due to the lack of necessity, Focke Wulfs were not introduced to the Eastern Front until the Battle of the Demyansk Pocket in 1942. Being of sturdier construction and more rugged, it preformed better in the harsh conditions that the Bf-109. It preformed well at the Third Battle of Kharkov and the Battle of Kursk, where the Focke Wulfs quickly achieved air superiority. As Soviet fighter numbers increased and experience and tactics improved, the planes began to suffer heavier losses. Despite inflicting massive Soviet aerial losses, the Focke Wulfs were in the end not prevalent enough to overcome Soviet advances.

German fighter pilots tended to like the Focke Wulf, holding it to be a more reliable plane than the Bf-109, and Allied pilots respected the plane. Several Axis allies including Spain, Finland and Hungry also received some of the planes. The Turkish Air Force would use it until 1947. Currently 28 Focke Wulfs remain, 11 in the United States. 20 replicas have also been created by Flug + Werk, ironically using Chinese-replicas of Soviet Shvetsov ASh-82 engines.

One of the 80's properties being revamped in 2020 is none other than G.I. Joe, this time under the "Classified Series" moniker. Manufactured and released by Hasbro, these figures are of the 6 inch scale rather than the 3.75 inch scale figures back in day, so more in line with the last line I actually paid attention to, Sigma 6.. and by pay attention to, I mean I actually knew existed.

You see, I'm actually not a G.I. Joe guy... or really any other 80s property outside of Transformers and some TMNT.

Well, for whatever reason, these figures have been RIDICULOUSLY hard to find, probably due to a combination of COVID and actual rabid fans hoarding them all. I only was able to get a hold of Scarlett her thanks to some assistance from a collector in London, ON helping me out (@Daniel Koper) where apparently they were much easier to come by.

So why Scarlett? She's the only female release in the First Wave, that's why.

Real name Shana M. O'Hara, she's one of the G.I. Joe specialists in Counter Intelligence, is skilled in Martial Arts and Acrobatics, and her weapon of choice is the XK-1 Power Crossbow along with knives. There's a whole extensive fictional biography for her (Scarlett is almost 40 years old, you know) that I'm sure some fans could probably recite for me.

These figures retail for $29.99 CAD, which is the price point for pretty all of the Hasbro figures based on the Marvel Legends 6 in. body. While I'm not a huge Legends fan, each new product line using it does show some improvements, and I was curious about this.

Upon opening the box, you'll get Scarlett complete with Bandolier, her crossbow and three knives. No BAF components with this first Wave, and I'm thinking this is going to stay that way for the purposes of maintaining this price.

Much like with a Figma or a Figuarts, if you look at Scarlett you'll immediately recognize some standard Marvel Legends and Hasbro traits. The overall body shape is there. Thigh swivels are still a thing, as are being given hands that clearly are only meant for holding one things (and not having optional parts to swap them out). Another standard feature, namely the lack of paint wherever possible (in this case, the weapons) makes another appearance.

Having said that, the amount of paint on Scarlett herself isn't too bad.

I remember some people hating on the line (Scarlett in particular) because they were "too colourful" and "anime like". Looking at her Classified Series design and the classic 80s look, she's actually pretty faithful to the original look, while adding some new features. She's now got some gold to break up the yellow of her gloves, gauntlets, boots, and so on, and she now only has chest armour rather than a full torso piece.

Her boots are more interesting too, with red soles, and boosters behind her calf. Gauntlets have moulded and painted throwing stars. Of course, there's also that Bandolier I mentioned earlier. There's textures and other similar fabric features moulded into her suit. Overall, her outfit has been given that 2000s sensibility, and I'm digging it.

The quality of the paint apps, however, range from pretty sharp to, well, Marvel Legends. Still, that means on the whole, the paint application quality on Scarlett is above the expectations I have of a Marvel Legends product.

The head is a bit harder to judge. By itself it's decent. Fairly clean paint work (even the eyes) with freckles. Hair detailing isn't bad and again, features some decent paint work. The only real concern would be the Death Glare, but it's a Hasbro figure, and at least it's a clean looking Death Glare.

Of course, then I take a look at reference materials on the box itself.

Sure, she's got the right coloured hair, but her hair and facial features are off in comparison to her profile pic on the front and side of the box, and by the art on the back of the box, they missed highlights in her hair and the shape of her eyes and eyebrows are completely off.

What are you gonna do?

Articulation resulted in some pleasant surprises. Scarlett is without a doubt probably the poseable 6 inch Hasbro figure I've played with in a long time (Transformers are a partnership with Takara Tomy). You get ankle rockers and pivots, double jointed knees, thigh swivel, hips that pull down for more range of motion, an actual waist joint as well as mid torso ball joint, shoulders with chest compress, forearm rotation, single jointed elbows, wrist pivot, neck rotation, and ball jointed head with pivot.

I'm not saying Scarlett's a Figuart, but it seems like the G.I. Joe line has built on the improvements of the Lightning Series Power Ranger stuff. The pull down hips and waist add a great amount of posing versatility.

The shoulders are interesting with that additional joint that allows the arms to come together/spread further apart. The Power Ranger suits, had a cut in the tunic that allows for maximum range of motion. The potential for increased shoulder motion is there, but the chest section of the figures will need to be slightly reworked.

Overall, I'd say the lower body has some great articulation, and the upper body has potential to be great, especially with a shoulder fix and double jointed elbows.

Finally there's build quality. Again, all things considered, not too bad. The materials are somewhat soft, but feel stiffer than the stuff that the Lightning Series are made from. I imagine that stiffness is what allows for the various fabric details to show up. Similarly, I found an improvement in the quality of the parts finishes and the build as compared to the Lighting Series figures.

The G.I. Joe line up should do well with fans due to nostalgia and general fun in articulation. It's not a line I'm going to get heavily involved in, but I hope those that are into it get an enjoyable ride from the line while it lasts.

I'm just happy it seems that Hasbro seems to be getting their head in the game and actually looking at articulation as something that matters. Maybe by the next line, they'll have updated the actual bodies to offer more than one muscle build?

Here's hoping!

This photo shows some of the many ways in which stages can be used. They can be built as low as 3 inches and up to ten feet high and beyond.

The multi-level feature allows stages to be used as bleachers.

The angled stage makes possible 45 degree catwalks. An "X" can be created which would attach to an existing stage. Models/Actors could then move from the main stage out into the audience area and back.

Auditorium stage too small for a large performance? This type of stage can be built to any height so it will match the existing stage...problem solved ! It can even be built over auditorium seating.

Roadside Attraction is a versatile new work housed in and around a vintage Seventies-era pop-up camper that has been retro-fitted to become the stage and setting for a new dance/theater performance

Designed to be shown virtually anywhere, indoors or out, Roadside Attraction is a family vacation that steps back in time to when Supertramp was on the radio, Connect Four was on the folding table and frisky business was in the bunks. Mom’s red Candies clapped from the camper’s linoleum kitchen window before she emerged in her cheetah print bathing suit with matching blanket, her platinum wig blowing in the breeze.

Exploring expectations, acceptance, and the excruciating but illuminating identification with family role models, Roadside Attraction is a slice of nostalgic Americana, replete with lawn chairs, a picnic table, and all the trappings of a family that has been together on a road trip for far, far too long.

The work centers around the Mother, who dreams of a life beyond the hum-drum of suburban, middle-American family life. Her fantasies come alive in the form of an avatar, a glamorous, fabulous projection of herself who gets to do everything Mom only dreams of, from rekindling a failing relationship with Dad, to ogling her daughter's strapping young boyfriend. The resulting movement sequences careen over and through the camper and campsite, sparking unrequited desires that sometimes unravel into tender reconciliations. Quirky, humorous, and heartbreaking, the work skips between bubbles of pop music woven into a through-composed original score.

As a performance, Roadside Attraction is a dance/theater piece for eight performers that incorporates the intimate, quirky, stunning and startling choreographic sensibility that is the hallmark of Third Rail’s critically acclaimed dance/theater work. Directed and Choreographed by Jennine Willett, with Tom Pearson and Zach Morris, and created in collaboration with the company. Performers include: Elizabeth Carena, Rebekah Morin, Tara O'Con, Tori Sparks, Niko Tsocanos, and Carlton Cyrus Ward. Original music composition by Sean Hagerty, with Isaiah Singer and Elizabeth Carena, played live.

Versatile vessels capable of short distance space travel, Ornithopters were mainly used for surface travel. Usually equipped with shields, the 'Thopters of Arrakis were unprotected as shields had the unfortunate side effect of calling the Great Worms from hundreds of miles away.

The Atreides, like the Harkonan before them, used 'Thopters as scouts inside the great desert, ferrying light cargo and passengers and most importantly guarding harvesters by watching for wormsign.

Light and fast, 'Thopters could be put to excellent military use armed with lasguns and sometimes small missiles. While not warships they could provide quick and deadly air strikes against the enemy.

Desert Ornithopters are always equipped with spare stillsuits for their crew in the event of a crash, allowing those aboard the chance for survival in until rescued, though in the deep desert chances were slim to none.

Captured 'Thopters were pivotal to the Fremen uprising led by Paul Atreides in 10,193.

his extremely versatile medium bomber was built by North American Aviation at their Kansas City, KS, plant. This aircraft is named in honor of Brig. Gen. William "Billy" Mitchell, who pioneered the concept of strategic aerial bombardment.

In April of 1942, Lt. Col. James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle, later Lt. General, led one of the most daring missions of the war flying the B-25. Only five months after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Lt. Col. Doolittle led 16 B-25 "Mitchell" bombers off the deck of the U. S. S. Hornet. The B-25s bombed Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe, and Nagoya. Lt. Col. Doolittle's "Tokyo Raiders" were successful in their mission.

The B-25 also served with distinction in North Africa, Italy, Europe, and the South Pacific.

The museum's B-25J, serial number 44-31032, was delivered to the Army Air Force in 1945 and put into storage until 1947. It was assigned to Vance AFB as a TB-25J and TB-25N for pilot training until retirement in 1958. The aircraft was then sold and registered as N3174AG. It participated in the 1970 Paramount Pictures release, "Catch - 22" and 44-31032 appeared in the film with the nose art of "Free, Fast and Ready".

The museum received the aircraft by truck in 1982. It was restored in 1998, wearing colors of the 42nd Bomb Group, 13th Air Force, and named "Problem Child". This aircraft is on loan from the USAF.

Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 (VMFAT-101) "Sharpshooters"

MCAS Miramar

Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 (VMFAT-101) is a United States Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet training squadron. The squadron is based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California and falls under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 11 (MAG-11) and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3rd MAW).

The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is an all-weather carrier-capable multirole fighter jet, designed to attack both ground and aerial targets. Designed in the 1970s for service with the United States Navy and Marine Corps, the Hornet is also used by the air forces of several other nations. It has been the aerial demonstration aircraft for the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels since 1986. Its primary missions are fighter escort, fleet air defense, suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), interdiction, close air support and reconnaissance. Its versatility and reliability have proven it to be a valuable carrier asset, though it has been criticized for its lack of range and payload compared to its contemporaries.
