Northern Mockingbird - Mimus polyglottos
Symbol of the South and state bird of Florida, the Northern Mockingbird is known to most Floridians because of its persistent singing, bold nature, and ability to nest successfully near human habitation.
The Northern Mockingbird breeds throughout much of the United States, except for the most northern parts, south to Mexico, the Bahama Islands, and the Caribbean. In Florida, Mockingbirds nest throughout the mainland and the Keys.
Habitat. The versatile Northern Mockingbird occurs in a wide range of open or partly open habitats across the continent from forest edge and pasture fencerows to tree clumps in the prairies and cactus deserts in the southwest. It is abundant in suburban areas with densities reaching 400 pairs per 100 acres in St. Petersburg (Woolfenden and Rohwer 1969).
Mockingbirds eat a wide range of insects and spiders, crayfish, snails, and occasionally lizards and small snakes. During winter in the South they often defend locally abundant fruit or berry supplies from wandering flocks of American Robins or Cedar Waxwings.
The bulky twig nest, lined with finer materials, is built by both sexes low in a dense bush or tree, often close to house. The eggs are pale blue-green and heavily spotted with reddish-brown. The average clutch size in Florida 3 or 4 eggs (Woolfenden and Rohwer 1969); incubation lasts 12 to 13 days, and the young leave the nest at 10 to 12 days of age (Terres 1980, Ehrlich et al. 1988). The Northern Mockingbird is an infrequent host of the Brown-headed Cowbird (Friedmann 1963).
Seasonal Occurrence. The breeding season extends from February through August, but most nesting occurs late April to early May (Stevenson and Anderson 1994). Mockingbirds are double or triple-brooded, and a pair that raised a brood per month in April, May, June, and July 1986 was reported from Sarasota County (Paul 1986). Mockingbirds become conspicuous in late summer and early fall with much chasing of other mockingbird and with harsh calls (F. Lohrer, pers. obs.). This probably represents birds of the year trying to establish a permanent territory in a neighborhood of established territory holders. Locally, a seasonal shift in habitat may occur as individuals seek berry-rich winter territories (Halkain 1983). Nocturnal tower-kills in Leon County suggest that some individuals may be truly migratory, but in central Florida (Orange County) only 1 mockingbird was recorded in tower-kills (Stevenson and Anderson 1994 ).
Status. The Northern Mockingbird is a permanent resident and nests throughout the state south to Key West, absent only from the western Everglades. It has been recorded in 93% (958) of all quadrangles in the state. The mockingbird's ability to nest throughout the state has been enhanced by the fragmentation and decrease of outer forested lands. However, its numbers have declined steadily since the 1950s (Stevenson and Anderson 1994).

The Volvo V70 is a versatile car. The V in V70 stands for versatile (S70 = saloon, C70 = Coupe).
Here the load carrying capabilities of a V70 are demonstrated. I am taking an internal door (see a previous photo) to the local paint strippers premises.
For loads that are longer than will fit in the load area the seats can be folded.
The rear passenger seat squabs (the bottom part of the seat) can be lifted to form a small bulkhead, then the remaining seat back is folded down. This forms a completely flat area from the tailgate to this newly created bulkhead.
For longer loads, the front passengers seat has two catches on the rear that allow the seat back to be folded forward. If required the rear seat squabs can also be removed, thus removing the bulkhead.
In this way a nearly 2 metre long house door can be loaded into the car, the tailgate can be closed, there is no obstruction to the cars controls or view out of the windows.
Oh, and I nearly forgot...
Fold everything back into place and you have a 5 seater, with capacity for an extra 2 in the load area - a seat folds out from the floor to form a rear facing double seat suitable for children. Thats what the two rear most seatbelts are for. This is a factory fitted option.
There is also an integrated booster seat located in the centre position of the rear seat. It is to be used by children who weigh between 15 and 36 kg and are between 97 and 137cm in height. It should not be used by children less than 3 years old
I don't believe there are many cars that are so versatile in this respect.

Haggis is a lot more versatile a food ingredient than most people think. It goes with a wide variety of accompaniments and can be served in many different ways. This recipe does see it served with the traditional tatties and neeps but not probably in any previously recognisable form. The tatties used are those Scottish summer favourites, Ayrshire new potatoes.

A classic example of versatility, flexibility and ingenuity; a philosophy known disparagingly these days as 'parts-bin manufacture'.

Described in 1953 by Macintosh, the Oxford Inflating Bellows was developed by the Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics as the basis of a versatile, artificial ventilation and anaesthetic system. The bellows, moulded from antistatic black rubber, contains a spring that causes it to self inflate to approximately half full. For transport, the bellows can be fully depressed when it locates with an internal sprung catch that secures it. Once released, the bellows acts as a flexible reservoir permitting spontaneous or manually assisted ventilation. The bellows is interposed between a pair of unidirectional, low resistance, gravity operated disc valves which are orientated to permit gas to enter the bellows from the 'INLET' port and to be expelled via the exit 'TO PATIENT' port. The latter valve can be lifted and disabled by a small magnet when it is optionally mounted on its bracket. The complete system includes a mask, angle piece, a Heidbrink-type variable orifice spill valve and a length of corrugated antistatic rubber hose. An oxygen inlet, fitted with a spring-loaded unidirectional valve, admits a supply of oxygen to the bellows whilst preventing leakage. The main assembly is housed in a free-standing metal casting. With the magnet in place and oxygen flowing, the assembled system constitutes a Mapleson 'A' partial rebreathing configuration whilst a non- rebreathing characteristic is achieved by removing the magnet. Manual ventilation is made possible by partially closing the Heidbringk valve or by replacing it with a Cardiff or similar inflating valve. The inlet port is provided with a taper to permit attachment of breathing system components.
This photo shows some of the many ways in which stages can be used. They can be built as low as 3 inches and up to ten feet high and beyond.
The multi-level feature allows stages to be used as bleachers.
The angled stage makes possible 45 degree catwalks. An "X" can be created which would attach to an existing stage. Models/Actors could then move from the main stage out into the audience area and back.
Auditorium stage too small for a large performance? This type of stage can be built to any height so it will match the existing stage...problem solved ! It can even be built over auditorium seating.
Roadside Attraction is a versatile new work housed in and around a vintage Seventies-era pop-up camper that has been retro-fitted to become the stage and setting for a new dance/theater performance
Designed to be shown virtually anywhere, indoors or out, Roadside Attraction is a family vacation that steps back in time to when Supertramp was on the radio, Connect Four was on the folding table and frisky business was in the bunks. Mom’s red Candies clapped from the camper’s linoleum kitchen window before she emerged in her cheetah print bathing suit with matching blanket, her platinum wig blowing in the breeze.
Exploring expectations, acceptance, and the excruciating but illuminating identification with family role models, Roadside Attraction is a slice of nostalgic Americana, replete with lawn chairs, a picnic table, and all the trappings of a family that has been together on a road trip for far, far too long.
The work centers around the Mother, who dreams of a life beyond the hum-drum of suburban, middle-American family life. Her fantasies come alive in the form of an avatar, a glamorous, fabulous projection of herself who gets to do everything Mom only dreams of, from rekindling a failing relationship with Dad, to ogling her daughter's strapping young boyfriend. The resulting movement sequences careen over and through the camper and campsite, sparking unrequited desires that sometimes unravel into tender reconciliations. Quirky, humorous, and heartbreaking, the work skips between bubbles of pop music woven into a through-composed original score.
As a performance, Roadside Attraction is a dance/theater piece for eight performers that incorporates the intimate, quirky, stunning and startling choreographic sensibility that is the hallmark of Third Rail’s critically acclaimed dance/theater work. Directed and Choreographed by Jennine Willett, with Tom Pearson and Zach Morris, and created in collaboration with the company. Performers include: Elizabeth Carena, Rebekah Morin, Tara O'Con, Tori Sparks, Niko Tsocanos, and Carlton Cyrus Ward. Original music composition by Sean Hagerty, with Isaiah Singer and Elizabeth Carena, played live.

Dutch actor Willem Nijholt (1934) is also a dancer and singer. His versatility led him to work in musicals, TV shows, stage plays, cabaret and several films. In recent years he has become known as a TV juror and author.
Willem Adrianus Nijholt was born in Gombong, Kedoe, the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) in 1934. He was the son of Jan Nijholt, a KNIL instructor, and Willemina Sophia Maria Arntz. At age eight he ended up in a Japanese POW camp, which left a deep scar for the rest of his life. At fourteen, he saw his father again, who was sent to work on the Burma Railway by the Japanese. After World War II, the family left the Dutch East Indies and settled in Millingen, the birthplace of his mother. Nijholt attended temporarily HBS (Higher Civic School) in Nijmegen, was briefly in the Navy and went to study at the school for dramatic arts in Amsterdam at age 23. His ill mother died in 1959, before she could see him performing on stage. He fell in love with the author Gerard Reve, who rejected him, but in 1962 he played a role in Reve’s play Commissaris Fennedy/ Commissioner Fennedy. His letters to Reve are published in the book Met Niets Begonnen (Started With Nothing). He made his screen debut in the TV film De huzaren/The Hussars (Walter van der Kamp, 1960). In 1964 he performed the role of Hoofd Piet (Head Pete) once during the national arrival of Sinterklaas in Hoorn. In 1968 he appeared in the popular satirical TV Show Hadimassa. He became very popular among children with his part in the innovative TV show Oebele (Bram van Erkel, 1968-1972) with Wieteke van Dort. He made his film debut in Daniel (Erik Terpstra, 1971) with Peter Schaapman.
In the 1970s, Willem Nijholt had his definitive breakthrough. On stage he worked with Wim Sonneveld in a successful cabaret show in 1971. In 1974 he played Theo Oudijck in the popular TV series De stille kracht/The Silent Force (Walter van der Kamp, 1974), with Pleuni Touw. Their nude scene was a big sensation. He also played Ben van Rooyen in the youth series De Kris Pusaka/The Kris Pusaka (Bram van Erkel, 1977). Nijholt starred in several stage musicals, including Wat een planeet (What a planet; 1973) and Foxtrot (1977), written by Annie MG Schmidt. In 1977 he was awarded the Johan Kaartprijs (Johan Kaart Award). In 1981 he played a voice teacher in the play Children of a Lesser God. He was asked to play this role also in London, but he did not accept the offer. He played roles in Dutch films like the box office hit Ciske de Rat (Guido Pieters, 1984) with Danny de Munk, and Havinck (Frans Weisz, 1987) in which he played the title character. Chip Douglas at IMDb: “Nijholt, at age 50, was ten years too old. But director Frans Weisz, screen testing countless leading men opposite (debutant Anne Martien) Lousberg, still wanted Nijholt to read with her, because he had a feeling Willem could bring out the best in Anne Martien. The young actress obviously felt the same way, because she decided there and then that Nijholt was the one to play her father. He ended up winning the coveted 'Golden Calf' award (the Dutch equivalent of the Academy Award) for his efforts.” In 1989 he played the lead role in the short film Alaska, Mike van Diem’s graduation film at the Dutch Film and Television Academy. The film won a Golden Calf and a Student Academy Award. In 1989, Nijholt played the Master of Ceremonies in the musical Cabaret (1989). That year, he received from Guido de Moor the prestigious Paul Steenbergen medal, which he passed on in 2002 to actor Pierre Bokma.
Willem Nijholt played part in the acclaimed TV series Bij nader inzien/On closer inspection (Frans Weisz, 1991) and Op afbetaling (Frans Weisz, 1993) with Renée Soutendijk. He also continued to appear regularly in Dutch films. He played Etienne in the Harry Mulisch adaptation Hoogste Tijd/The Last Call (Frans Weisz, 1995) starring Rijk de Gooijer. He appeared with Helmut Berger and Udo Kier in Unter den Palmen (Miriam Kruishoop, 1999) and reunited with Pleuni Touw in De vriendschap/The friendship (Nouchka van Brakel, 2001). He appeared in several family films, including Pietje Bell/Peter Bell (Maria Peters, 2002), Pietje Bell 2: De Jacht op de Tsarenkroon/Peter Bell II: The Hunt for the Czar Crown (Maria Peters, 2003) and De Griezelbus/The Horror Bus (Pieter Kuijpers, 2005). Nijholt enjoyed a massive success when he played the controller in the Dutch edition of the stage musical Miss Saigon (1996). Another great musical role was Fagin in Oliver! (1999-2000). In 2002 he retired from the musical and in 2004 he played his last stage role. In 1999 Willem Nijholt was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. In the television talent show Op zoek naar ... (2007-2011; Looking for Evita, Looking for Joseph, Looking for Mary Poppins and Looking for Zorro), Nijholt was the juror. Since 2011 he is a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. His most recent screen role was in the TV crime series Penoza II (Diederik Van Rooijen, 2012-2013), starring Monic Hendrickx.
