Each year, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) draws thousands of international filmmakers, stars and

media to Toronto and for this years festival (Sept. 10-19), The Wine Ladies are entering the exciting world of web TV.

Georgia and Susanne (The Wine Ladies) set up their temporary TV studio at The Windsor Arms, 18 St. Thomas

Street in Yorkville - ground zero for the film festival - and have conducted brief interviews with the stars, filmmakers, writers, international VIPs and media representatives discussing favourite wines, what wines go with which movies at this years festival, favourite movies about wine (e.g.: Bottle Shock, Sideways, A Walk in the Clouds, Under the Tuscan Sun) - the ultimate in wine TV! Celebrity guests are invited to enjoy a glass of wine with The Wine Ladies. www.TheWIneLadies.com

The Wine Ladies Talking Wine with The Stars show was graced by the presence of a beautiful, versatile, accomplished young actress Brittany Scobie who has a varied series of roles including Susan Sadie Atkins in TV movie Manson, a prostitute in The Capture of the Green River Killer and for this years TIFF a juicy role as the bank teller Alma in High Life.

In High Life, its 1983 and hopeless junkie Dick gets an unwelcome visit from the past - his seriously sleazy former cellmate, Bug, to be precise. Bug requires a crash course in the 80s: different music, different drugs, and machines in walls that dispense money. The latter development gives Dick an idea. They think that Alma played by Brittany will help them in their efforts, but alas you have to watch the movie to find out.

Vaswati Misra

Vaswati’s love for dance began as a young child of 7, she received training first under the tutelage of Smt Reba Vidyarthi and then had the good fortune to be groomed by the great kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj. An immensely talented dancer by the age of ten Vaswati was already dancing on stage. Performing both as a soloist as well as with her husband, dancer Krishan Mohan Misra she was acclaimed both for her command over the technique of the dance form as well as her expressieve qualities.

A successful choreographer and a soloist of repute Vaswati performed in prestigious festivals like Baba Allaudin Khan Samaroh, Bindadin Kathak Mahotsav, Khajuraho, Orchha Mahotsava, Nishagandhi Festival, Sangeet Natak Akademi’s 50th celebration, Qutub Festival and travelled to U.S.A, Japan, South Africa, latin America, the Middle East, Mexico and entire Europe.

In 1979 Vaswati joined the Sriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra as a teacher and was there for eight years, in 1989 she held the post of Kathak Guru at the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi was there again for eight years, in 1997 she resigned from Kathak Kendra and two years later, combining her passion for performance and education she set up an arts education centre the Pandit Shambhu Maharaj Kathak Academy as the educational wing of Dhwani, continued to grow with additions of a repertory and Zaroorat, a school for the underprivileged.

Dhwani Group

Dhwani is a cultural organization founded by leading proponents of Kathak, Shri Krishan Mohan Misra and Vaswati Misra in 1984.

It seeks to preserve and promote the performing and fine arts traditions of India by organizing choreographed dance, theatrical and musical performances of the highest caliber.

Trained under the auspices of the maestro- Pt Birju Maharaj himself, Vaswati Misra has perfected the technique and grammar of Kathak through her career spanning 40 years. Her choreographed pieces have been widely acclaimed by audiences and connoisseurs across the globe. Over the years, Vaswati Misra and Dhwani has built a reputation for collaborating with a diverse profile of artists and performers- from indigenous and folk artists to children from challenging backgrounds, from the greatest maestros, writers and actors of our times to young debutants- many of whom have been nurtured into accomplished performers in their own right.

Each performance by Dhwani is crafted to perfect the interpretation of sound and beat, the balance of strong yet lyrical body movements, powerful foot-work and subtle expressions. They are unique in their highly contemporary and aesthetic interpretation of a very traditional form.

Dhwani is empanelled with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the Ministry of Culture and CID UNESCO.

Concept Note

Founded by dancer and choreographer, Vaswati Misra, The DHwani Repertory is made up of dancers whose versatility, virtuosity and dynamic movement quality, owes itself to the training imparted by Vaswati Misra. Their performances resonate with a long history of cultural traditions and are the result of explorations into elements that make Kathak the dance form that it is. Herself, an accomplished artiste of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak, Vaswati finds inspiration for her choreography within the structural boundaries of Kathak as it has grown and developed over the countries.

Concepts like Bhaav bataana (the expression of a mood, seated on stage) Padhant, (where the mood and feeling inherent in mnemonic syllables are explored) or forms based on traditional musical genres like gats, taraaanaas and kavits are recreated in a matter that often fuse the perceived boundaries between dance and music, the traditional and the contemporary.

At the Ananya Dance Festival, The Dhwani Repertory will present an eclectic selection of some of its shorter works as well as some excerpts from production like Jeevan and Kalpataru.

Velbon Sherpa 750R Tripod in use at the Tindale Tarn viewing screen...plus a few defects.

I initially wrote this review for Amazon as I bought my third 750R through them, but as usual they didn't publish it. So I thought I'd publish it myself here, in a slightly expanded form, along with the above composite photo.

The tripod specification can be found here . This link includes a few images illustrating its versatility.

I bought my first Velbon Sherpa 750R tripod in November 2006 (from Hilton Photographic, priced £88), my second in February 2010 (from Briston Cameras, priced £90), and my third In June 2011 (via Amazon, priced £80). The only difference is that this last one didn't come with a carry case, which I never wanted anyway. It's been used mainly for digiscoping with my 80mm Opticron scope and compact digital camera, which together weigh about 2kg - well within the 4kg load specification. The fact that I'm on my third one in about five years indicates that they're not particularly reliable when subject to hard use.

The first trivial problem I encountered is when I lost one of the rubber feet after using the tripod on a muddy shore. To be fair, I contacted the manufacturer and they sent me a replacement free of charge. Over the next few years I lost five of the six feet on my first two tripods under similar circumstances, and soon stopped bothering about them, just taping over the ends of the legs to avoid trapping mud (see photo, top right). A more serious problem is that after a few months of use, I found it progressively more difficult to lock the tripod head at a steep angle (eg when attempting to photograph birds perched in trees). To be fair again, I think it's probably asking a bit much of the relatively cheap tripod head to cope with a heavy-weight scope used in this way, but I think this should be spelled out in the specification.

As I couldn't find anything better on the market for my purposes, I eventually bought a second one; but within a few months one of the plastic lever-type locks on one of the legs snapped off (see photo, middle right). In theory I could of course have sent the unit back for repair, as there's a two-year guarantee, but as I didn't want it to be out of service for any length of time, I just swapped the damaged leg with one from my old tripod. But within six months the same thing had happened to the other two legs, and so I had to replace those as well. If that wasn't bad enough, after about 15 months some sort of lubrication problem seemed to develop making it impossible to rotate the scope smoothly in the horizontal plane. So I replaced the head as well, meaning that I was now virtually back to using my original tripod...and so I bought another one.

I've been using my third 750R for about six months now, and all was going well till a few weeks ago when the plastic latch that secures the quick release plate to the tripod head sheared (see photo, bottom right). Again, rather than sending it back for repair, I just replaced the latch with a spare from one of my old units.

Other than these reliability issues, I've found the tripod to be fit-for-purpose for the vast majority of applications. Additionally, I often walk long distances when out digiscoping, and so although I need something fairly sturdy to support an 80mm scope I don't want anything too heavy: the 750R is just about the ideal weight. Also, I don't like to advertise the fact that I'm carrying optical equipment, and as the tripod packs down to 55cm it can easily be carried along with my scope in an averaged-sized rucksack.

My only substantial operational gripe is that there are no fine controls on the tripod head, which makes it difficult to get the framing right when viewing images at very high magnifications (for all I know, this comment might apply to other, more expensive models as well). Although this isn't generally important for stills photography, as the resulting photos can easily be cropped, it can be crucial when shooting video: on some occasions it's taken me several minutes of fiddling about with the crude locking mechanism before I've been able to centre an image in the camera frame - and birds don't always hang around that long!

In my original Amazon review, which I wrote several months ago, I gave this product a three-star rating (out of five). Despite my subsequent experience with the sheared latch, I'd probably stick with that assessment, taking everything into consideration. (See subsequent updates.)

18 November 2011

Update 28 April 12: The replacement latch, which I'd taken from my second tripod, sheared today; also one of the leg locks will now only half close - although it currently still performs its function. I'm beginning to think that my three-star rating was far too generous!

Update 18 June 12: Yet another of the leg locks sheared today - this is in addition to the one that will not fully close. I've therefore now experienced five failures on the nine legs from my three tripods! In view of this - and the second latch problem reported above - I'd now give this product a ONE STAR rating on the Amazon system, largely in view of its appalling reliability record.

Update 9 January 13. Following a further failure today (panning action jammed) I thought it might be useful to list all the faults experienced on my three Velbon Sherpa 750R Tripods over a period of about six years:

RUBBER FEET: Nine out of nine lost.

LEG LOCKS: Five out of nine legs rendered useless due to sheared latches.

QUICK-RELEASE PLATE LATCH: Two out of three sheared.

TRIPOD HEAD PANNING ACTION: Jammed on two out of three units (An attempt to fix the most recent failure in-the-field resulted in the bolt connecting the tripod head to the leg unit shearing).

After this last failure I finally gave up on the 750R and instead bought a Manfrotto 190CXPRO4 Carbon Fibre Tripod with 804RC2 head. See photo in my Digiscoping (Equipment etc) Flickr set for details.

Note added 20 February 13: Although I'm now happily using Manfrotto kit for my digiscoping, I thought I'd see if it would be possible to replace some of the sheared leg locks so that I could use the Velon 750R as a backup tripod. I emailed Velbon about this, and after sending them a photo of the affected part I was sent two replacement latches free of charge. Unfortunately there was no instruction provided as to how to carry out the repair. It would appear that a special tool is required in order to remove the pin that acts as a hinge for the latch (I tried tapping it out, but without success). If anyone is thinking about buying a 750R it might be worth finding out about this beforehand.

Then I Googled Organic Transit. Turns out the ELF is a versatile, low carbon footprint pedal-powered vehicle that has a solar panel on top and can be driven three ways: pedal power alone; pedal power with electric assist; or electric alone. The battery recharges in 7 hours of sunlight, or 2-1/2 hours from an outlet. Pricey, but cool.

From my beautiful young rooster BW, a handsome fellow.

It’s controlled by a credit-card-size processor with wireless connectivity that permits two-way exchange of data on engine workload, sensors and wheel position. Its one-of-a-kind programming interface makes it possible to reprogram all components live while the vehicle is on the go. Users can try out many of these features for themselves during the demonstration.

Dustin Hoffman (1937) is an Oscar–winning American actor with a career in film, television, and theater since 1960. Hoffman has been known for his versatile portrayals of antiheroes and vulnerable characters. He has earned acclaim for his work in such films as The Graduate (1967), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and Rain Man (1988). Hoffman made his directorial debut with Quartet (2012).

Dustin Lee Hoffman was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1937. His parents were Lillian and Harry Hoffman. Although he is Jewish, Hoffman and his brother were raised in a relatively secular household. Hoffman's acting career began at age 19, when he dropped out of college to pursue the stage at the Pasadena Playhouse. There, Hoffman befriended another young actor, Gene Hackman. Eventually, the two would both move to New York City where they lived together with Robert Duvall, all three of them looking for work in television and off-Broadway plays. Hoffman studied at Actors Studio and became a dedicated method actor. To make ends meet, he took odd jobs and the occasional bit role. Slowly but surely, Hoffman began building a strong reputation through smaller roles. Hoffman acted in a few Broadway productions, including the play, Eh? in 1966, for which he won a Theatre World Award and a Drama Desk Award. Word of mouth soon reached Hollywood, and Hoffman made his film debut in The Tiger Makes Out (1967), alongside Eli Wallach. In 1966, director Mike Nichols auditioned Hoffman for a lead role in the Broadway musical The Apple Tree, but rejected him because he could not sing well enough and gave Alan Alda the part. But Nichols was so impressed with Hoffman's overall audition he cast him as Benjamin Braddock, who returns to his wealthy parents' home in California after graduating from college, in The Graduate (1967). This enormously popular movie changed the landscape of American cinema in the 1960s, and would in turn make Hoffman an unlikely star. In 1969, Hoffman struck gold again with the gritty Midnight Cowboy (John Schlesinger, 1969), in which he played the part of Ratso Rizzo, a homeless man in New York City. This performance garnered him a second Oscar nomination. Also in 1969, Hoffman co-starred with Mia Farrow in John and Mary (Peter Yates, 1969). He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and received a 1970 BAFTA Award for his role, although the film received mixed reviews.

On a roll in the 1970s, Dustin Hoffman starred in several acclaimed movies, including Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah, 1971), Papillon (Franklin J. Schaffner, 1973), and Lenny (Bob Fosse, 1974). Another highlight was the political thriller All the President's Men (Alan J. Pakula, 1976) about the Watergate scandal, which starred Hoffman and Robert Redford as the real-life journalists, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. Hoffman next starred in the thriller Marathon Man (John Schlesinger, 1976). based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, opposite Laurence Olivier and Roy Scheider He finally won an Academy Award for his performance in Kramer vs. Kramer (Robert Benton, 1979), with co-star Meryl Streep also nabbing an Oscar. In 1982, playing yet another antihero, Hoffman starred in the comedy Tootsie (Sydney Pollack, 1982) as Michael Dorsey, a down-and-out actor who must dress up as a woman to get a part on a daytime soap opera. Tootsie earned ten Academy Award nominations, including Hoffman's fifth nomination. Following a brief but successful return to the stage in Death of a Salesman and The Merchant of Venice, Hoffman starred in the Hollywood smash Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988) alongside Tom Cruise. Hoffman's portrayal of an autistic genius earned him a second Academy Award and remains one of his most iconic performances.

The 1990s brought Dustin Hoffman appearances in a series of big-budget movies that proved largely disappointing at the box office. He returned in the revenge drama/legal thriller Sleepers (Barry Levinson, 1996) with Robert De Niro, Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, and Kevin Bacon. Hoffman's next critically acclaimed role was in with the political satire Wag the Dog (Barry Levinson, 1997). Playing an unscrupulous Hollywood executive out to fool the public into thinking the country was at war, he scored yet another Oscar nomination. In 2004, Hoffman again exhibited his comedic prowess when he starred with Lily Tomlin in an offbeat movie about a detective team that solves existential crises, I Heart Huckabees (David O'Russell, 2004). Further cementing his new direction, he went on to appear in the Ben Stiller comedies Meet the Fockers (Jay Roach, 2004) and Little Fockers (Paul Weitz, 2010), and the children's fantasy Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (Zach Helm, 2007). Hoffman continues to star in blockbuster films like Stranger than Fiction (2006), but also seeks out new and different projects, such as lending his voice to the animated children's movies Kung Fu Panda and The Tale of Despereaux (both 2008). He made his directorial debut in 2012 with Quartet, and in 2014 he joined the ensemble cast of Jon Favreau's critically acclaimed Chef. In 2016, he won the International Emmy Award for Best Actor for his work on Roald Dahl's Esio Trot. In the fall of 2017, after the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment allegations rocked Hollywood, Hoffman became one of the actors forced to account for past behavior. Writer Anna Graham Hunter, who was 17 when she interned on the set of the Death of a Salesman TV movie in 1985, recounted the older actor asking about her sex life and groping her. In December, a new round of reports surfaced in which five women accused Hoffman of sexual assault or harassment, including accounts of the actor exposing himself and forced sexual activity. Hoffman denied. Apart from his successful professional work, Hoffman married Anne Byrne in 1969. He adopted her daughter, Karina, from a previous marriage, and in 1970 their second daughter, Jenna, was born. After more than 10 years of marriage, Hoffman and Anne divorced in 1980. Soon after, he married attorney Lisa Gottsegen. They would go on to have four children: Jacob Edward, Rebecca Lillian, Maxwell Geoffrey and Alexandra Lydia.

Roadside Attraction is a versatile new work housed in and around a vintage Seventies-era pop-up camper that has been retro-fitted to become the stage and setting for a new dance/theater performance

Designed to be shown virtually anywhere, indoors or out, Roadside Attraction is a family vacation that steps back in time to when Supertramp was on the radio, Connect Four was on the folding table and frisky business was in the bunks. Mom’s red Candies clapped from the camper’s linoleum kitchen window before she emerged in her cheetah print bathing suit with matching blanket, her platinum wig blowing in the breeze.

Exploring expectations, acceptance, and the excruciating but illuminating identification with family role models, Roadside Attraction is a slice of nostalgic Americana, replete with lawn chairs, a picnic table, and all the trappings of a family that has been together on a road trip for far, far too long.

The work centers around the Mother, who dreams of a life beyond the hum-drum of suburban, middle-American family life. Her fantasies come alive in the form of an avatar, a glamorous, fabulous projection of herself who gets to do everything Mom only dreams of, from rekindling a failing relationship with Dad, to ogling her daughter's strapping young boyfriend. The resulting movement sequences careen over and through the camper and campsite, sparking unrequited desires that sometimes unravel into tender reconciliations. Quirky, humorous, and heartbreaking, the work skips between bubbles of pop music woven into a through-composed original score.

As a performance, Roadside Attraction is a dance/theater piece for eight performers that incorporates the intimate, quirky, stunning and startling choreographic sensibility that is the hallmark of Third Rail’s critically acclaimed dance/theater work. Directed and Choreographed by Jennine Willett, with Tom Pearson and Zach Morris, and created in collaboration with the company. Performers include: Elizabeth Carena, Rebekah Morin, Tara O'Con, Tori Sparks, Niko Tsocanos, and Carlton Cyrus Ward. Original music composition by Sean Hagerty, with Isaiah Singer and Elizabeth Carena, played live.
