Peregrine Falcon - Falco Peregrinus

The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), also known as the peregrine, and historically as the duck hawk in North America, is a widespread bird of prey (raptor) in the family Falconidae. A large, crow-sized falcon, it has a blue-grey back, barred white underparts, and a black head. As is typical of bird-eating raptors, peregrine falcons are sexually dimorphic, with females being considerably larger than males. The peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching over 320 km/h (200 mph) during its characteristic hunting stoop (high-speed dive), making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom. According to a National Geographic TV programme, the highest measured speed of a peregrine falcon is 389 km/h (242 mph).

The peregrine's breeding range includes land regions from the Arctic tundra to the tropics. It can be found nearly everywhere on Earth, except extreme polar regions, very high mountains, and most tropical rainforests; the only major ice-free landmass from which it is entirely absent is New Zealand. This makes it the world's most widespread raptor, and one of the most widely found bird species. In fact, the only land-based bird species found over a larger geographic area is not always naturally occurring, but one widely introduced by humans, the rock pigeon, which in turn now supports many peregrine populations as a prey species. The peregrine is a highly successful example of urban wildlife in much of its range, taking advantage of tall buildings as nest sites and an abundance of prey such as pigeons and ducks. Both the English and scientific names of this species mean "wandering falcon," referring to the migratory habits of many northern populations. Experts recognize 17 to 19 subspecies, which vary in appearance and range; disagreement exists over whether the distinctive Barbary falcon is represented by two subspecies of Falco peregrinus, or is a separate species, F. pelegrinoides. The two species' divergence is relatively recent, during the time of the last ice age, therefore the genetic differential between them (and also the difference in their appearance) is relatively tiny. They are only about 0.6–0.8% genetically differentiated.

While its diet consists almost exclusively of medium-sized birds, the peregrine will occasionally hunt small mammals, small reptiles, or even insects. Reaching sexual maturity at one year, it mates for life and nests in a scrape, normally on cliff edges or, in recent times, on tall human-made structures. The peregrine falcon became an endangered species in many areas because of the widespread use of certain pesticides, especially DDT. Since the ban on DDT from the early 1970s, populations have recovered, supported by large-scale protection of nesting places and releases to the wild.

The peregrine falcon is a well respected falconry bird due to its strong hunting ability, high trainability, versatility, and – in recent years – availability via captive breeding. It is effective on most game bird species, from small to large.

Versatile Peruvian Zinnias are at home in cottage gardens, as a mass planting, and among meadow flowers. An easy-care annual wildflower that will bloom all summer, it produces an abundance of red, nectar-rich flowers that attract butterflies and bees. The 1-1/2" diameter blooms perch on tall stems, making them delightful as cut flowers, too. Peruvian Zinnia is native to the Southwest US; it prefers full sun and, once established, tolerates dry soils, though it adapts to most soil types. Direct sow seeds in the garden after all danger of frost is past, or get a head start by sowing seeds indoors about a month before your last spring frost date. If you allow some flowers to mature and form seedpods, the seeds may self-sow and, in mild climates, create a naturalized planting that will return every year.

This field is where I shot a lot of flowers/bokeh last year. This year I was disappointed to find the flowers were mostly hidden with field grasses. The hummingbirds were still coming, though, so I came away with something, lol. : )

I was pretty excited to find out that Be My Mannequin? Pose Store was coming to Chronicles & Legends: Deep Blue Sea! Knowing BMM?'s (Be My Mannequin?) attention to detail and how the poses are always so natural and versatile, I knew these MER poses were going to be amazing!

In my picture, Vin (the red merman) is posed with one of the singles poses: Euphoria. Its intended to be a loop-the-loop with you being posed upside down! I simply adjusted for the picture!

Then there is Ana (the green mermaid) posed with the other singles pose: Exploring. Its a stunning swimming pose that would also double as a great flying pose!

I (the startled human) am posed with the couples pose of the set: No Escape. I'm using the 'Escaping Left' which was perfect for displaying the shocked reaction I was needing! Not shown in the picture is the other half of the pose: 'Escaping Right' and the two detailed tentacle props that wrap around your leg/tail! You can even transfer them to your friends!

Es war fast nach Mitternacht in Dresden Neustadt, als die Straßen fast menschenleer waren und die warme Beleuchtung der Schokoladenbar die Fassade und den Gehweg in ein gemütliches Licht tauchte. Faszination Licht - mitten in der Stadt. Mich hat der Kontrast zwischen der historischen Architektur und den modernen Graffitis fasziniert, die zusammen die Vielseitigkeit und den Charme dieses Viertels ausmachen. Die geparkten Fahrräder, scheinbar zufällig hingestellt, verleihen der Szene eine gewisse Lebendigkeit und erzählen gleichzeitig von den vielen Geschichten, die dieser Ort vermutlich schon erlebt hat. Es war ein Moment, in dem das Zusammenspiel von Licht, Struktur und urbanem Flair einfach perfekt war.

It was almost midnight in Dresden Neustadt when the streets were almost deserted and the warm lighting of the chocolate bar bathed the façade and sidewalk in a cozy light. The fascination of light - in the middle of the city. I was fascinated by the contrast between the historic architecture and the modern graffiti, which together make up the versatility and charm of this neighborhood. The parked bicycles, seemingly randomly placed, lend the scene a certain liveliness and at the same time tell of the many stories that this place has probably already experienced. It was a moment in which the interplay of light, structure and urban flair was simply perfect.

It might not be the most upmarket place we’ve stayed in this year, but George (presumably Anglicized for the overwhelmingly British clientele) and his team have given us a very warm welcome. The apartment is comfortable and clean and we don’t ask for more than that. If George is slightly disappointed that we don’t spend quite as much time or money at the hotel bar as most of his guests, he doesn’t show it. Maybe my rapturous approval of the house Village Salad has put a big mark in the credit column for the occupants of room sixty-six. But we prefer to explore a holiday destination rather than lounge about by the pool ordering pints of Mythos all day. Besides which, Ali only drinks water. Hot water or cold water are the only two beverages she needs in life. People don’t believe her at first - they think she’s just being polite. No really - no tea, no coffee, definitely no juice or sugary fizzy pop (you should see her face when I pour a glass of orange juice in the morning), and no alcohol either. I make up for these shortfalls - except for the fizzy pop. I don’t drink that stuff either. I’m quite keen on the Mythos though. Especially the way it’s served in frozen glasses. I’ve taken to putting my own beer glasses in the ice box for an hour before pouring one back at the apartment in the evenings.

Our holiday rep is young, shy and giggly. She’s also Swedish. I was in Sweden less than two weeks ago, and at the bar, as I pay for my Village Salad, I bore the poor girl to sleep about my adventures in her homeland. She agrees that the west coast is a beautiful part of the country. In turn I agree that we’re having a lovely time here in Rhodes. She grins. I think it’s the last time we’ll stay in a place like this though. For years we booked everything independently, but after the pandemic, and just so we could blame everything on the operator when things went wrong, we returned to the traditional package holiday. But it’s not really our thing. Neither of us like mixing with other people, and we really don’t need to be entertained in the evenings. We much prefer the sound of the cicadas at night to what we’re being served with here. So far we’ve been treated to Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, Lionel Richie, Billy Ocean, Rihanna, Wilson Pickett and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. All of this as we sit out on the balcony each evening, whether we like it or not. Obviously not the actual artists. How much do you think we paid for this holiday? Besides which it wouldn’t be possible as a number of them aren’t with us anymore. What’s interesting is that all of the performers come from South Africa. We think it’s the same people coming back every two or three nights, each time wearing different wigs. The quizmaster isn’t from South Africa though. Essex I reckon. He was still reading out the questions after midnight the other evening. The majority of the other guests are several years older than us. Exactly how many Rihanna songs are they familiar with? I only know two and I’m a mere stripling compared to most of them. The artists are very versatile. They usually lapse into Earth Wind and Fire or Heatwave after they’ve played the only three songs that anyone knows. Two if it’s Rihanna. Nobody seems to notice.

And competing with all of this is the din from the bar just across the way. To my horror, someone in charge of the jukebox has just faded out Mark Knopfler’s legendary guitar break from “The Sultans of Swing,” the only thing that has quite literally been music to my ears as we sit out here on the balcony in the dark. Because apparently it’s karaoke night. And the most important thing about being a karaoke performer is that you need to be tone deaf. Take the hen party that’s shouting the words of Paul Heaton over the microphone. More like an Imperfect Ten really. I sigh and open the Booking.com app. I noticed there were some apartments in a village up in the hills near the Seven Springs that we visited the other day. Next time we’ll do it all independently again, just like we used to.

To escape from all of this we’ve hired a car, just like we always do on these holidays. This time it’s a white Suzuki Celerio with a squeaky clutch pedal and a remote key fob that has a dead battery. Mostly we turn right at the bottom of our road, heading along the strip and out of town towards wherever we’ve decided to retreat to. Each time we do this, our first hazard is a bend in the road that I’ve unaffectionately named Poo Pong corner, a reference to the fact that it evidently sits over the town’s sewage drain, and upon which someone has opened a restaurant called Flames. Oh the irony! Surely it would only take a lit cigarette on an especially noxious day for the Flames to go up in, well, flames? It never seems to be that busy there. I love Greek food, but not when there are competing aromas coming from a river of floating effluent just a few yards away that’s come from the inner workings of a couple of thousand overindulgent tourists.

Occasionally though, we turn left instead of right, and drive a mile or two down the road to the tiny beach at the edge of the next town. This is a little piece of the Greece we love, with quiet water lapping at the shoreline, the flat warm sea such a gentle contrast to the drama we’re used to at home. And one evening as the sun sunk over the hills in the west it delivered the first worthwhile picture. Strangely, taken along the holiday strip rather than in some remote wild area. Later, back on the balcony, as someone from the raucous bar squawked to everyone within a half mile radius that they were simply the best, I had a quick go at it on the little laptop that comes with me on every holiday these days. I decided to award myself a small glass of ouzo. And promptly changed my mind in favour of a slightly bigger one. I needed to do something to drown that karaoke out.

Honeybees 'flap' their wings about 250 (!) times a second . Far too quickly for Olymp to show more of their flight than a rotor movement (see inset). In the main photo Apis has collected lots of pollen and is now delving for nectar in a flower of Augustine's Rhododendron.

Augustine Henry (1857-1930) - for whom William Botting Hemsley (1843-1924) named that flowering shrub - must've been busy as a Bee himself. He studied natural sciences and philosophy winning a Gold Medal and then went on to do a crash course in medicine. He didn't much want to enter 'boring' medical practice in some town in Great Britain or Ireland. Henry was encouraged to enter the British Custom Services. He quickly learned the rudiments of Chinese (Mandarin) and at the age of 24 was posted to Shanghai. Soon after he was sent to Yichang (Incanh) in Hubei, China. Life as a customs official there was boring, and Henry took up botany, first as a collector of plants. He was to become a versatile botanist who became an expert on Chinese plants and sent an enormous collection back to England. Among them this Rhododendron. Departing China (1900), Henry studied forestry in France and was appointed to the first readership in forestry at the university of Cambridge and in 1913 to the first chair in forestry in Dublin, Ireland. Busy Bee, indeed.

A simple yet versatile Shure stereo audio mixer, still in production over 25 years since its introduction. This mixer accommodates two microphones and three stereo sources, plus a feature set designed for ease of use.

At work, I put this model of mixer and a stereo amplifier in a road case as part of a simple sound system that could easily accommodate a microphone and, say, a CD player (this was about 25 years ago, for a service we discontinued during the pandemic). One useful feature I turned on reduced the stereo input levels whenever the microphone was used, reducing the number of knobs to turn before and after using the mike from up to four down to just one, or even eliminating the need altogether if the mike had an on/off switch built in.

For size reference, the center of each knob is spaced one inch (25.4mm) apart from each other.

Audacia is Allseas’ versatile pipelay vessel, optimised for the execution of small- to large-diameter pipeline projects of any length in all water depths, and for associated work such as the installation of risers and subsea protection frames. The concept for Audacia was developed entirely in-house and she has been operational since 2007.

A length of 225 m places her between Allseas’ dynamically positioned pipelay vessels Solitaire and Lorelay. Precise manoeuvring on full dynamic positioning with a stinger positioned on the bow allow Audacia to work safely in congested areas and lay pipes in very deep water. Pipeline start-ups and lay-downs are executed in very quick time ensuring any disruption to other activities near platforms is minimised. Due to her long length and ship-shape Audacia can accommodate multiple work stations and has a greater pipe hold capacity. Her independence from anchor handlers and large buffer capacity also ensure she is less dependent on pipe off-loading from supply vessels. A high transit speed, high lay speed and large carrying capacity ensure Audacia is highly competitive for pipelay projects anywhere in the world.

Pine Creek Falls is one of many waterfalls in the Knobs Region of Kentucky, a horseshoe-shaped wall of steep knobs that buffers the undulating grass hills of the Bluegrass Region, famous for its horse farms. I found Dark Matter to be a well done pose and the hand placement allows you to add props to shots quite easily as well if it suits you. I modified the pose to look up slightly, though it usually looks straight ahead. So yes, this pose is copy/mod (as are all of Be My Mannequin?'s poses).

For a long time, I'd always wanted to sing at the Open Mic Night at the little bar around the corner from my place. However, history taught me that many people didn't really like the sound of my singing voice. I often practiced but no matter what, I was teased every time I sang around friends or family.

I'd discovered the little bar a while ago and had started going over on Friday nights. I watched as week after week, people went up there and did their best. They were so good! I wanted to try it so bad but I was too embarrassed.

So...I practiced. I would practice on my ride home from work, to the grocery store, whenever I had some time alone. After a couple of months, I decided I was as good as I wanna gonna get.

So Friday night rolled around as it did every week. I sat at my usual table and fidgeted as other singers went up to put in their requests. Feeling nervous as all hell, I got up before I convinced myself otherwise! I strode up the to DJ and she smiled and winked. "I was wondering when you were going to come up here, sweetheart," she teased, offering me the paper to write down my song requests. "You can put down up to four." I smiled nervously and nodded, writing down only the one before sitting back down.

Finally after about twenty minutes, it was my turn. I heard my name called out by the DJ. Blushing, I made my way up to the stage and stared out at the faces. 'Ignore them. Ignore them,' I told myself silently.

As the music began to play, all the lights dimmed and the spotlight shined down on me. My cue was very suddenly upon me and without thinking, I began to sing.

I closed my eyes and let the swells of the music move through me and I began to get really into the song; ignoring all else as the emotions filled me. And as I sang, I began to realize that I wasn't singing half bad. It...actually sounded good!

As I began to approach the bridge and go for the final chorus, I opened my eyes just a touch...and saw that everyone was on the edge of their seats, listening to me sing so wonderfully. Between that and the emotion of the song, I began to feel tears slide down my cheeks in the light as for the moment, I felt like I could do anything and that I was a star!

When the song began to end, there was a super loud applause and lots of cheers as the lights came on. I couldn't help but smile and laugh, wiping my eyes free of tears. It had truly been a wonderful experience after all. I'm glad I jumped.
