Some 250 kilometers northeast of Kunming, the capital of China's Yunnan Province, lies Dongchuan, a rural area with the world's most imposing red earth. Spread over vast terraced fields, Dongchuan’s unusual brownish-red color comes from its rich deposit of iron and copper. Exposed to the warm and humid climate of Yunnan, the iron in the soil undergoes oxidization to form iron oxide which is naturally red in color. These oxides, deposited through many years, gradually developed into the extraordinary reddish brown soil seen here today. Every year during spring, when this area is ploughed for agriculture, a large number of visitors and photographers come to see squares of freshly upturned red earth waiting to be sown along with areas of budding green plants. The fiery red soil juxtaposed with emerald green barley, and golden yellow buckwheat, against a blue sky produces one of the richest color palate rarely seen in nature.
Vaste klant aan de Rheinstrecke zijn nogsteeds dagelijks de SBB en BLS treinen richting het Ruhrgebiet, België en Nederland. BLS rijdt onder andere de Cargobeamer intermodaal van het Italiaanse Domodossola naar Kaldenkirchen welke bekend staat om haar grote laadbakken waar naast trailers ook grote voertuigen ik kunnen worden vervoerd, wat regelmatig gebeurd. Ook bij deze trein was dat het geval en werd er aan het einde van de trein een landbouwvoertuig mee vervoerd.
In een redelijk dichtgetrokken Bornheim passeert deze Cargobeamer met als trekkracht de BLS 485 015 welke beschikt over de nieuwe "Alpinisten" bestickering. De trein is hier onderweg vanuit het zuiden naar het aan de grens met Nederland gelegen Kaldenkirchen. Bij Kaldenkirchen zal de trein gelost en weer geladen worden bij de Cabooter-Terminal van Kaldenkirchen!
De vast rijdende EuroCity passeerde ook weer, dit maal met de kale 1216 013 op kop. Als EC 87 is het geheel onderweg vanuit München naar Bologna. De trein kwam hier abrupt tot stilstand door een ingreep, maar de loc trok deze EC vrij moeiteloos weer verder de heuvel op.

Parc le plus connu et le plus fréquenté du Kenya. C'est d'ailleurs une réserve, et non un parc, car le territoire est toujours habité par les Masaïs qui y font paitre leurs troupeaux. La réserve est essentiellement constituée de vastes plaines de savane vallonnée. Plusieurs scènes du film Out of Africa y furent d'ailleurs tournées.
Moins fréquentée que le Serengeti, la réserve est un endroit superbe où observer la migration des gnous, des zèbres, des gazelles de Thomson et d'autres animaux deux fois par an, en particulier lors de leur franchissement de la rivière Mara. Ces herbivores se regroupent en troupeaux qui peuvent dépasser les 10 000 têtes avant de se jeter à l'eau.
Free to roam a vast area in a national park, Plains Bison are sometimes easily seen in Grasslands, and other times they will disappear for days or weeks. Cows, calves, and young bulls are often found in sub-groups of the herd, while older bulls tend to keep their own company, either solo or with a few others. So, driving the Ecotour Road in November, I wasn't surprised to see this enormous bull bison by the roadside.
I slowed down to avoid startling him, and slowly rolled past until I reached what I judged to be a safe distance to stop. Using a beanbag, I snapped this photo from the car - only this one shot. The bison swung his huge head around to look at me, then his back end seemed to collapse: he swayed and nearly fell. Adjusting, he took a couple of steps - and nearly fell again. I could see that he wasn't placing any weight on his right hind leg. It didn't seem to be broken, but he could have sustained an injury. Another possibility would be arthritis.
Sometimes competing bison get injured, fighting during the midsummer rut, but this old guy would be well past participating. By the age of 15 or so, they just want to be left in peace. In time, of course, they are subject to various age-related conditions. It was really sad to see him in difficulty. I generally don't flinch when I see a natural process unfolding, including predator-prey encounters, but in this case I didn't want to stress him further, so I drove on. A couple hours later, coming back, I saw him about a hundred metres from the road, grazing with a buddy, still operating on three legs. If this is the end of the line for him - and with the worst of winter still ahead, that seems likely - his carcass will be scavenged by coyotes, magpies, ravens, and other prairie wildlife; his bones will be gnawed by mice and voles. All his nutrients will be recycled. Bison are North America's largest land mammal, the bulls weighing in at up to 2,000 pounds. It will be a huge calorie bonanza for the critters that find his remains, much like a whale decomposing on the ocean floor, although not quite on that scale.

Na 32 jaren is de diensttijd van de locserie 1700 bij NS toch echt voorbij. In 2019 werd er afscheid genomen van deze serie in combinatie met DDAR, en vier jaar later is nu ook de volledige IC Berlijn dienst overgenomen door modernere vervangers. De relatief jonge serie is natuurlijk nog wel bij private ondernemingen rijdend te zien, maar van het fraaie NS-geel/grijs is nu dan ook definitief afscheid genomen. Zowel de 186 als 193 zijn getooid met tinten blauw naast het geel/grijs.
Op 12 februari 2021 was het einde langzaam maar zeker al in zicht voor de 1746, die we op de foto met een stam rijtuigen als IC 141 onderweg naar Bad Bentheim zien. Het had overal in het land flink gesneeuwd de dagen hiervoor, en dat gaf een geweldige mogelijkheid om deze locs nog eens in volle pracht in een winters landschap vast te leggen.

"While today’s vagrant might be tomorrow’s model citizen, destined to become a colonizer and perhaps an established resident, as Grinnell (1922) asserted, most vagrants might be viewed as “failed colonization attempts”. Newton (2008: 267–299) summarized quite well the various explanations of the causes of vagrancy put forward over the past century or so. They include: normal dispersal over long distances, population growth or expansion, drift by winds, migration overshoots, deviant directional tendencies (right time but wrong direction), mirror-image migration, and reversed direction migration. While all explanations probably play a role and explain the occurrence of some vagrant individuals, we address the latter three explanations as they likely involve the vast majority of landbirds. The mirror-image misorientation theory, originally developed by DeSante (1973), and described by Diamond (1982), proposed that vagrants are misoriented by confusion of right and left in relating an inherited migration direction to a compass reference direction. Mirror-image misorientation theory accounts for observations made by DeSante (1983a) that in certain situations large-angle misorientations seem more frequent than small or intermediate deviations from the normal migration course (Alerstam, 1990). Misorientation by the wind has long been suggested as a cause of accidentals (Austin, 1971), but Thorup et al. (2012) found differently, as the authors used radio telemetry to track individual migratory flights of several species of songbirds from the Faroe Islands, approximately halfway between Norway and Iceland, far west of their normal migration route. Birds with expected easterly and south-easterly migration direction departed westward out over the Atlantic Ocean, indicating that these birds are actively flying in the “wrong” direction and that their occurrence is not caused by wind drift. However, on Attu Island, in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska, Hameed et al. (2009) found statistical evidence that the occurrence of spring Asian vagrants on this North Pacific island were correlated with storm winds from the west."

Vandaag het eerste spotdagje van 2022 gehad. Daarbij had ik als plan om een ICNG overbrenging vast te leggen, die helemaal niet kwam opdagen.
Snel maar een ander plan gesmeed, wat resulteerde in een ritje met de ICE International 220 naar onze hoofdstad. Daar konden we, mede dankzij een supervriendelijke HC (hoofdconducteur), de trein naar Amersfoort Centraal nog halen. In Amersfoort werd er uitgestapt om een keteltrein op te wachten met een dubbele Nez-Cassé van RFO. Het zou gaan om de 1837 en 1830, waarbij de 1830 in tweede positie mee reed. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan, snel naar een geschikte positie gezocht voor een foto, terwijl de trein zich al aandiende.
Nadat we wat met elkaar gekletst hadden, kregen we het idee om achter de volgende RFO trein aan te gaan. Ditmaal zou de recent bestickerde RFO 1828, met Nederland vlag, de sigaar zijn. Snel een geschikt reisadvies gezocht, om naar Barneveld Noord te reizen. Aldaar begon opnieuw het wachten, dit omdat we ruim op tijd waren voor de doorkomst van deze loc.

Les vastes serres sont inaugurées en 1874. Elles s'inspirent du Crystal Palace construites pour l'Exposition universelle de Londres en 1851. Les serres du jardin botanique de Copenhague sont financées par Jacob Christian Jacobsen (1811-1887), fondateur de l'entreprise Carlsberg. Elles sont inscrites en 1977, avec l'ensemble du jardin, à la liste du patrimoine protégé.
Living on the edge - Lines in the sand.
Although I grew up in a working class area of a big city I find myself drawn to photograph the the coast and the junction of land, sea and sky. Mankind has been part of this landscape for thousands of years and we are now as much a part of it as the waves.
The beach at Holkham, North Norfolk, England is vast and even in high summer never looks crowded. It's emptiness gave me the opportunity to shoot along the lines of drying sand created by the ebbing tide. The sea, a single person and wind turbines can be seen in the distance, mankind and our creations are never far away but here nature still dominates.

Cet édifice est un musée montréalais, située dans le quartier de Pointe-Saint-Charles. C'est l'un des vestiges du régime français au Canada et la plus ancienne maison de ferme de la ville de Montréal. Elle est située sur l'ancienne terre acquise par Marguerite Bourgeoys et la congrégation de Notre-Dame. La structure du corps de logis est emblématique des constructions du régime français d'influence normande et bretonne. La maison mesure 15,24 mètres par 9,15 mètres.
Construite par François Le Ber (1626 - 1694) vers 1660, elle est acquise en 1668 par Marguerite Bourgeoys (1620-1700) fondatrice de la congrégation de Notre-Dame de Montréal. Cette belle maison de ferme sert alors à accueillir les filles du Roy. Elle est aussi utilisée comme ouvroir et petite école. Un incendie détruit la maison en 1693 et seuls la laiterie et l'appentis-est résistent aux flammes. En 1698, on reconstruit la maison et mon ancêtre, Jean Deslandes dit Champigny, participera aux fondations de la maison en tant que maçon. Sur la façade de la maison on peut voir l'inscription de deux dates, 1668 et 1698, qui rappellent l'achat de la maison et sa reconstruction après l'incendie de 1693.
En 1965, la Maison Saint-Gabriel avec sa grange de pierre et ce qui reste du vaste domaine d’autrefois, est classée monument historique par la commission des Monuments historiques du Québec. En mars 1966, elle devient un musée et ouvre ses portes aux visiteurs. Le 8 juin 2007, la maison Saint-Gabriel est reconnue comme lieu historique national du Canada.
Blhovce - De dag na het avontuur aan het Balatonmeer werd richting de Slowaakse grens gereden om aldaar de befaamde Duikbrillen op de gevoelige chip vast te leggen. De spoorlijn langs Fiľakovo heeft een tweeuurlijkse verbinding met Košice en Zvolen. Deze plaatsen zijn drukke spoorwegknooppunten, waarmee deze Rýchlik - sneltrein - een belangrijke verbinding tussen die twee vormt.
Meestal kennen wij als Nederlanders de benaming "R" als regionale trein, meer bepaald als RE, RB of moderner in Nederland als RS. De R staat hier voor Regionaal, waarbij de tweede letter staat voor respectievelijk Express, Bahn of Sprinter. De Regiona(a)l Express wordt tegenwoordig gezien als een soort sneltrein, al is deze meestentijds vooral binnen de vervoersgemeenschap, concessie of regio te vinden. Het nadeel aan de diverse concessies maakt dat veel verbindingen worden geknipt, om zodoende de verschillende vervoersgebieden af te bakenen. Enfin, zoals wij - en ook de Polen - de R als regionale trein zien, is dat in voormalig Tsjecho-Slowakije niet zo. Zowel in Tsjechië als in Slowakije is de R de snelle trein, waarbij Rýchlik in beider talen letterlijk staat voor snel. Zodoende zet ZSSK materieel in waarmee de reiziger de ruim 3 uur durende reis tussen Košice en Zvolen met redelijk comfort kan doorstaan.
Dit alles is voor de spoorweghobbyist pas interessant als de betreffende rijtuigen door fraaie locomotieven worden getrokken. Gelukkig is dat voor de R-treinen tussen Košice en Zvolen het geval, gezien deze verbinding vrijwel geheel over dieseltrajecten voert. De tractie moge duidelijk zijn, daar ZSSK over weinig anders beschikt dan de uiterst fraaie locomotieven serie 757 "Brejlovec" - beter bekend als Duikbril in Nederland. Naast de blauwe ČD-varianten zijn er bij de deling van de Tsjecho-slowaakse republiek vele locomotieven bij de Slowaakse rechtsopvolger van ČSD terecht gekomen. Dit bedrijf onderhoudt de machines goed, en zodoende worden deze uit de jaren 1970 stammende locomotieven naar grote tevredenheid van de hobbyisten ingezet op de sneltreinen in het zuiden van Slowakije.
De avond tevoren werd een plan gemaakt voor de volgende dag, om de reeks op enkele fraaie foto's vast te leggen. Het weer zou gaan meewerken, en dus werd post gevat aan het stationnetje van Blhovce om R 912 te fotograferen met het station als motief. Zoals zoveel stations in deze regio, wordt het door de stationschef en zijn danwel haar familie goed onderhouden en voorzien van de nodige flora. Het maakt voor de reizigers van R 912 weinig uit, als deze met dik 60 kilometer per uur het verder niets zeggende station passeren op "groen door". De eerste plaat van de dag was binnen, twee blije Nederlanders genietend van de dieselwalm maakten zich klaar voor meer 757-geweld!

Le Merle noir, ou plus communément Merle, est une espèce de passereaux de la famille des turdidés. Le merle niche en Europe, Asie et Afrique du Nord, et a été introduit en Australie et en Nouvelle-Zélande.
Le mâle est entièrement noir, à part le bec jaune et un anneau jaune autour de l'œil, et possède un vaste répertoire de vocalisations tandis que la femelle adulte et les juvéniles ont un plumage brun. Cette espèce niche dans les bois et jardins, construisant un nid en forme de coupe aux formes bien définies, bordé de boue. Le Merle noir est omnivore et consomme une grande variété d'insectes, de vers et de fruits.

Zoals beschreven zat het op de koude maar zonnige morgen van 2 maart 2025 niet mee qua OV. Na de met 30 seconden gemiste overstap op de IC naar Roosendaal werd op hoog tempo richting Dordrecht-zuid gefietst. Gelukkig was ik net op tijd om de blauwe 193792 met de goed beladen Neurenbergshuttle vast te leggen die hier passeert bij Dordrecht onderweg richting Venlo en verder.

While prairie communities continue to decline across much of North America, there are still places in the west where vast remnants of short-grass prairie can be found. A favorite example lies in northeast New Mexico, where the western edge of the southwestern edge of the Great Plains remains relatively intact. That is not to say it is unaltered, as keystone species have been lost and invasive species have encroached. But one can get a brief glimpse of what it may have been like before the modern era.
Here a pronghorn buck forages in this expanse, where large tracts of public land are still fence free and provide these ancient prairie dwellers with room to roam.

A Rouen, les fêtes Jeanne d'Arc ont lieu le dimanche le plus proche du 30 mai. Son architecte, Louis Arretche, a voulu renouer avec la tradition de beaucoup de vieilles églises normandes en donnant à l'édifice la forme d'un bateau renversé : il a pour cela retrouvé les principes de la construction navale traditionnelle et la structure en bois reste apparente au-dessus de la nef.

The vast monument that has stood since 1979 on the Place du Vieux Marché where she was burned responds to a double recognition: it is both a church to honor Saint Joan of Arc and a civil memorial to commemorate the heroine celebrated by France on the second Sunday of May. In Rouen, the Joan of Arc celebrations take place on the Sunday closest to May 30. Its architect, Louis Arretche, wanted to reconnect with the tradition of many old Norman churches by giving the building the shape of an upturned boat: to do this, he rediscovered the principles of traditional shipbuilding and the wooden structure remains visible above the nave. The exterior, resolutely modern, evokes the sea with a covering of slate or copper scales.
On my way to the utterly splendid Aquarium - with a vast array of small sea creatures in finely maintained terrariums and aquariums - I walked through Nishikaigan Park. It's a breathing space on high dunes between the city proper of Niigata and the Sea of Japan. That park has many shrines and memorials most of which remained a mystery to me, clueless with regard to Japanese language. But I did find a monument marked in English. It was erected in a high place by the friends of Ango Sakaguchi (1906-1955) upon his death. Sakaguchi was a proponent of 'decadent' literature. And that 'decadence' was not of the soft and ripe kind. But rather, as Yukio Mishima (1925-1970) said: his prose, like vodka and gin, is brutally strong. When I was a young student and in thrall to Mishima I'd not yet heard of Sakaguchi but came to his work (in translation) later. Mishima is right!
Anyway, I was lucky on the path above the beach to see row upon row of Roundleaf Chastetree. And the color of the flowers - lavender - immediately reminded me of decadence! and hence of Mishima and Sakaguchi, who hails from Niigata.
De spoorlijn over de Hindenburgdamm verbindt het schiereiland Sylt met het vaste land van Duitsland. Omdat op Sylt autoverkeer is toegestaan maar er geen autoweg is aangelegd rijden er elk half uur autotreinen tussen beide plaatsen. DB Autozug rijdt in het hoofdseizoen zeker 20 keer per dag. Sinds december 2016 is concurrentie toegelaten en heeft RDC zich ook in het shuttlevervoer gestort. Bij het toekennen van treinpaden aan vervoerders kon meer capaciteit op het baanvak Westerland-Niebüll verkregen worden indien reismogelijkheden geboden werden over langere afstand.
DB Fernverkehr bedacht toen het concept Syltshuttle Plus: een extra IC verbinding tussen Westerland, Niebüll en het verderop gelegen Bredstedt (en 1x per dag zelfs naar Hamburg). Één tot twee keer per uur wordt sindsdien een treinstel type BR628 achterop de Syltshuttle gerangeerd en in Niebüll weer afgekoppeld. De treinen rijden bijna standaard leeg, want een ticket is flink duurder dan de veel snellere Regionalexpress van DB Regio.
Op zaterdag 29 april 2017 vertrekt de 628 532 hier uit Niebüll als D 1415 naar Bredstedt en passeert hier de Autoverladung in Niebüll.
I've never been to Mavora Lakes during a peak season, so it has always been empty. Knowing you have the entire area to yourselves is exhilarating.

The desert night lay hushed, a vast stage of silence. On a jagged outcrop, a lone coyote stood rigid—its silhouette carved against the pallid glow. The sands shimmered faintly, stars burning overhead, while the breeze whispered across the dunes.
By the fire, Reed and Butler sat listening to the crackle and pop of the flames. Old friends since school, they made this pilgrimage to the desert twice each year, trading stories before sleep claimed them. A final cup of coffee, then the night would close.
Reed paused. Something stirred. The coyote was gone from the rock. Then—again—a sound. Low, wet, gurgling. Just beyond the firelight. His eyes strained, but the blaze blinded him to the dark.
The glare broke with motion. A monstrous shape vaulted over the fire. Claws like scythes tore into Reed’s chest. Butler screamed, scrambling to rise, but the beast was upon him in an instant. The desert swallowed their cries. In seconds it was over.
Its grotesque head swiveled, yellow eyes burning as they swept the camp for movement. Sand still clung stubbornly to its charred scales, its body etched with blisters from radioactive earth.
Hatched prematurely it had been placed in an incubator, a device that ultimately led to its survival in more ways than one.
From the poisoned sands near the crater at what had been Site N39, crazed and more vicious than those before, it had clawed its way free.
Ravenous hunger gnawed at every fiber.
Now, it would feed.

In the vast grounds of Daigoji beyond the Sanboin Temple, the gardens and forest become quite dense. The foliage, colours and shade become all enveloping in some spaces. It can be very dark in the distant recesses, especially as here in the late afternoon.

The creation of High Dynamic Range (HDR) images of the solar corona is a fascinating challenge, driven by the need to capture the vast dynamic range of brightness that defines these celestial phenomena. This endeavor marries the artistic with the scientific, uncovering details and structures of the corona that a single exposure could never reveal.
This particular HDR image of the solar corona was meticulously crafted from a series of exposures captured during the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. My setup for totality included a Canon Ra camera, a Canon EF200mm f/2.8L II USM Lens paired with a Canon 2x III Extender for an effective focal length of 400mm, set at F/8, ISO 200. The camera was mounted on an iOptron SkyTracker, and I utilized a laptop with the SET'n'C (Solar Eclipse Timer and Controller) for precise camera control. The range of exposure times spanned from 1/1000 to 4 seconds, encompassing 1/1000, 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, and 4 seconds.
During the eclipse, I successfully captured four complete series of photos at these shutter speeds, all in CR3 format. I then processed these files in a Raw editor, adjusting texture, clarity, and denoise settings before saving them as 16-bit TIFF files.
In Photoshop, I centered the photo by loading the images into layers (File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack...) and utilized the “difference” blending mode for layers, manually centering each image using the arrow keys. An average shift calculation from image to image helped address the challenge of centering overexposed images, which could not be simply aligned based on the moon alone.
To create a mean image, I converted the selected layers into a Smart Object and applied the Mean stack mode (Layer > Smart Objects > Stack Mode > Mean), then flattened the image and saved it as mean.tif. For the moon to be at the center of the image, I cropped it accordingly.
I applied a Radial Blur in Photoshop (Filter > Blur > Radial Blur) with the settings: Spin as the Blur Method, Best for Quality, and an Amount of 10, ensuring the moon was centered in the image. This blurred image was saved as blur.tif.
To subtract the blurred image from the original, I used the Apply Image command (Image > Apply Image), setting the source to blur.tif, with the blending mode set to Subtract and an offset of 128. I then compressed the dynamic range using the Levels tool (Image > Adjustments > Levels) and saved the file as subtract.tif.
To multiply the mean image with the subtracted image, I once again used the Apply Image command, setting the blending mode to Multiply. The final image was saved as done.tif.
Final touches were made using Topaz Denoise, the Raw Filter editor, and other Photoshop tools to enhance the image.
The final HDR composition is not merely a visual feast but a technical triumph that reveals the complexity and elegance of the sun's atmosphere. These images are invaluable, providing insights into solar physics and the forces that shape the corona. They also offer a breathtaking visual experience that conveys the awe-inspiring beauty of solar eclipses to a global audience. Through this HDR image, the profound beauty of a transient celestial moment is captured, enriching our appreciation and understanding of the cosmos's wonders and presenting the solar corona in a captivating new light.
