Monument Valley "Ndzisgaii in Navajo", meaning valley of the rocks, is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. It is located on the Arizona–Utah state line, near the Four Corners area. The valley lies within the territory of the Navajo Nation Reservation and is accessible from U.S. Highway 163.

Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Director John Ford used the location for a number of his best-known films and thus, in the words of critic Keith Phipps, "its five square miles have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West.

Tierra de Campos ("Land of Fields") is a large historical and natural region or greater comarca that straddles the provinces of León, Zamora, Valladolid and Palencia, in Castile and León, Spain. It is a vast, desolate plain with practically no relief, except for some wide undulations of the terrain.

Originally it was known as "Gothic Plains" (Campi Gothici or Campi Gothorum), as the area had been settled by Visigoths who fled from Aquitaine Gaul after its conquest by the Franks. It was first mentioned under this name in Codex Vigilanus (Codex Albeldensis), and described as extending "from the river Douro, to the Christian Kingdom".

Description

Northern class 150 unit 150104 (partnered with 150138) departs Blackpool South with the 3.16pm to Colne (2N78).

With a scheduled 4 minute turnaround at this terminus, there's barely time for the driver to walk from one end of the train to the other before setting off again. On this day the turnaround was even tighter seeing as arrival from Colne was 2 minutes late.

Blackpool South, with its single platform and evidence of former glories en route, is very much the Cinderella line into this popular northern seaside town. In fact a significant part of the remaining platform has been abandoned to nature, as seen in this shot. By contrast Blackpool North is vibrant, recently electrified, and boasts fast direct services to London Euston. No surprise It also handles the vast majority of passenger arrivals and departures.

I arrived into this station on a sunny Sunday afternoon and walked the two miles or so along the bracing, enjoyable and ever vibrant promenade before waltzing back inland to North Station for the rather faster ride back to Preston.

A bit of a record shot so I'm not expecting a ten from Len. Sure I spotted Madge though.....

The vast coastal dune fields of Namibia, Africa, are home to beautiful wildlife, such as this Springbok, sprinting up one of the dunes. They are specially adapted to this area, and can eat a plant rich in water, but bitter, which their own species in other parts of Namibia would not be able to tolerate.

The afternoon was devoted to lava fields, we stopped at the village of Vik before crossing the Myrdalssandur volcanic washout plains. We ended the day passing through the vast Eldhraun lava field, the world's largest recorded lava field in the past thousand years. These are vast and desolate places but the essence of Iceland with its 130 volcanoes.

The River Arts District consists of a vast array of artists and working studios in 22 former industrial and historical buildings spread out along a one mile stretch of the French Broad River. This eclectic area is an exciting exploration of arts, food and exercise. Plan on spending a day or more visiting artists working in their studios, grabbing a bite of local cuisine or a brew and taking time to find art that’s perfect for your world.

More than 200 artists work in paint, pencil, pottery, metal, fiber, glass, wax, paper and more. As unique and individual as their art, so too are their schedules. There are no official “Open Hours” for the River Arts District, but at any given time throughout the year, you will find a plethora of open studios and galleries. If you are coming to see someone in particular, your best bet is to check in with them before your visit. Do it here, online via our search feature, or check the Studio Guide.

Cloister of the abbey. The abbey of San Giovanni in Venere is located in the municipality of Fossacesia, on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The monastic complex of San Giovanni in Venere consists of a basilica and the nearby monastery, both built in the early thirteenth century.

The site where the abbey stands was a sanctuary, already existing at the time of the first Roman emperor Caesar Augustus, dedicated to the goddess Venus Conciliatrice.

Most South Africans I know feel quite lost in the vast dangers of our current political and economical situation. Bad government may soon cause our downfall. Nonetheless, it will be a last resort for me to leave. I love this continent.

while hunting for another photo in my vast store of "stuff", I ran into the photo on the left. I don't know how, or when, or why, but I thought I'd to invert and see what was there. It's definitely me, I must have been working on making negatives at the time.

one of life's mysteries.

on the right is the inversion.

I tried searching on my stream, but it was quite a task. dunno whether I've used this photo before or not.

ah, I did find a version here from Sept 2016. I was working on oiled paper negatives.

Spagna, Castiglia-La Mancia, Toledo, Inverno 2013

I have just spent the past five days in the vast Hortobágy National Park in eastern Hungary. The park, a part of the Alföld (Great Plain), was designated as a national park in 1973 (the first in Hungary), and elected among the World Heritage sites in 1999. The Hortobágy is Hungary's largest protected area, and the largest semi-natural grassland in Europe.

However, I didn't have to travel far to see this Syrian Woodpecker which is very like Great Spotted Woodpecker. It was nesting in a tree outside the front door of my hotel!

Thanks for your visit and any comment you make on my photographs – it is greatly appreciated and encouraging!

Patagonia has always held a special place in my heart. The vast landscapes, imposing mountains, serene lakes, and diverse wildlife leave me breathless. It was in this magical region that I experienced one of the most thrilling moments of my life: a face-to-face encounter with a puma.

On the second day of the W Circuit trek, I was hiking solo from Central Mountain Hostel towards Francés Mountain Hostel (a roughly 17 km/10.5-mile, 6-hour trek) when I spotted a figure in the bushes. My heart raced – could it be a Lesser Rhea ( flic.kr/p/2mw23tV ), the ostrich-like bird I'd been hoping to see?

Cautiously, I started taking pictures. To my surprise and delight, the creature emerged from hiding. But it wasn't a Rhea – it was a puma!

I never imagined seeing a puma so close. Its beauty and imposing presence left me speechless for a moment. I watched it, mesmerized by its reddish-gray coat and piercing eyes.

Torres del Paine National Park is estimated to have a puma population between 50 and 100. These magnificent animals are the second-largest cats in the Americas, after jaguars, though considered "small" globally. While Patagonian pumas are Chile's largest feline, males typically weigh between 150 and 220 pounds (68-100 kg), while females weigh over 100 pounds (49 kg). Their length can range from 5 to 9 feet (1.5-2.7 meters) from head to tail. (For reference, I'm 5'8" tall and weigh 140 pounds – 1.73 meters and 63.5 kg).

Fear quickly replaced my awe. I was alone in a wild environment, facing a top predator. What should I do?

Safety leaflets from the park entrance came to mind – make eye contact, stand tall, and don't run. Generally, staying calm is key around wild animals, as they're unlikely to attack unless threatened. Additionally, in a park with abundant food sources like guanacos, rheas, huemuls, Patagonian gray foxes, and culpeo foxes, the pumas likely wouldn't see me as prey.

Carefully, I put my camera away and gripped my trekking poles tightly. If the puma attacked, I'd defend myself with everything I had.

A Happy Ending and Unforgettable Lesson:

Thankfully, the puma showed no interest in me. With the same calmness it displayed upon arrival, it retreated back into the forest.

Trembling with a mix of emotions, I stood there for a few minutes. Adrenaline still coursed through my veins, but overwhelming joy and gratitude filled me. I had just witnessed a spectacular display of nature's power.

This encounter profoundly impacted me. It instilled a deep respect for wildlife and their habitat. It also revealed the awe-inspiring power of nature and the importance of connecting with it.

If you have Netflix, check out a documentary called "Our Great National Parks," narrated by Barack Obama. Season 1, episode 2 focuses on Chilean Patagonia. This breathtaking region boasts 24 unique national parks and is quickly becoming one of the most protected areas on Earth.

The series showcases the stunning beauty of the natural world, from the beaches of Africa and the islands of Japan to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Bonus fact: The episode featuring Chilean Patagonia even won Barack Obama an Emmy Award for Outstanding Narrator!

From the top of the mountain which was once the kingdom of Mapumgubwe, this is a panoramic shot of the valley below. There is evidently some water below the surface as the trees are green despite the drought. There are two small groups of impala, an obvious group of elephant and another elephant herd just visible on the far slope. I haven't yet spotted anything else but the ranger had his gun to hand just in case. If you can zoom in you will be able to just see over the ridge the dry sandy river basin of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers.

Sunset from Kaim Hill in Ayrshire.

Having never been up here before I didn't know what view to expect from the summit, so I was shocked to discover how vast it was. Views over Hunterston Power station to Arran and the Cumbrae Isles. You can also see two oil drilling vessels, Ensco Ds8 and Valaris Ds, down on the right that are being stored at the old Cyldeport at the moment.

Kaim Hill itself has a bit of a history being an old millstone quarry many years ago. From what i believe, the ruins in the foreground is whats left of the old millstone quarry office.

The vast interior based on the basilica's plan was designed in Latin cross and divided into naves, two corridors with stained glass windows and a short transept. The largest ship is 100 meters long, which gives it an impressive austerity. It has a trompe-l'oeil effect on the ship heading toward the aspe, making it appear larger than it really is. The thin composite pillars between the nave and the aisle are getting closer as you enter the nave.

The interior also has Corinthian columns, which were inspired by the classical Greek and Roman era.

The pulpit on the right, commissioned by the Rucellai family in 1443, was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and executed by his adopted son Andre Cavalcanti. This pulpit has a particularly significant history, because in this pulpit occurred the first attack to Galileo Galilei, leading eventually to its accusation.

How small does the person feel
