The University of Kentucky (UK) is a public coeducational university in Lexington, Kentucky. Founded in 1865 by John Bowman as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky, the university is one of the state's two land-grant universities and the largest college or university in the state. The school has an enrollment of 28,928 students as of Fall 2012.

Students are divided into 16 colleges, a graduate school, 93 undergraduate programs, 99 master programs, 66 doctoral programs, and four professional programs. The University of Kentucky has fifteen libraries on campus. The largest is William T. Young Library, a federal depository, hosting subjects related to social sciences, humanities and life sciences collections. In recent years, the university has focused expenditures increasingly on research, following a compact formed by the Kentucky General Assembly in 1997. The directive mandated that the university become a Top 20 public research institution, in terms of an overall ranking to be determined by the university itself, by the year 2020.

Humboldt University of Berlin was established by Frederick William III on the initiative of Wilhelm von Humboldt, Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Friedrich Ernst Daniel Schleiermacher as the University of Berlin in 1809 and opened in 1810, making it the oldest of Berlin's four universities. From 1810 until its closure in 1945, it was named Friedrich Wilhelm University. During the Cold War the university was in East Berlin and was de facto split in two when the Free University of Berlin opened in West Berlin. The university received its current name in honour of Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt in 1949.

The university is divided into nine faculties, including its medical school shared with the Free University of Berlin, has a student enrollment of around 32,000 students, and offers degree programs in some 189 disciplines from undergraduate to post-doctorate level. Its main campus is located on Unter den Linden. Students have included Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Heinrich Heine, Otto von Bismarck and W.E.B. Du Bois. Since the historical name, Friedrich Wilhelm University, had monarchic origins, the school was officially renamed in 1949. Although the Soviet occupational authorities preferred to name the school after a communist leader, university leaders were able to name it Humboldt University of Berlin, after the two Humboldt brothers, a name that was uncontroversial also in the West. After the German reunification, the university was radically restructured and all employees were terminated The professors were almost entirely replaced with West German professors, several of them from the Free University of Berlin. As a result of this purge, the university essentially became a new institution in the West German tradition with little continuity from the institution that existed in East Germany.

Creator role: Architect

Date: 1948

Current location: San Juan, Puerto Rico

Description of work: Klumb worked between 1946 and 1966 as the university's only architect. The Rio Piedras and Mayaguez campuses of the University of Puerto Rico allowed Klumb to explore the possibilities of a social architecture adapted to the conditions of Puerto Rico. He set the standards and guidelines for architecture of open and flowing spaces. He also developed several architectural strategies to tone down natural light with the use of various designs for brise-soleils which provided light and shadow. He preferred to design his buildings to take advantage of the prevailing trade winds of the island. Klumb's buildings are all organized around open, democratic spaces accessible to all.
