Once you are happy with the bell shape and the smoothness, bake it. Heat gun is great for this stage (you will absolutely need a heat gun for the tentacles anyway). You start seeing the marble through the clay as if by magic.
Bake it well, you will need a relatively strong clay in the next step.

(This tutorial was greatly inspired by Sandra's tutorial posted here and on her lovely blog bonequea.com. Go check it out, if you haven't already seen it : )!)
This photo was taken in the Moroccan Atlas mountains while on a hiking trip. The total exposure time is 56 minutes, the photo consists of 28 2-minute images stacked using startrails.exe.
The map position is very approximate.
Here's my tutorial:
To capture the movement of the stars at night, you'll need to have a very, very long exposure, 5 minutes as a minimum, but usually more like an hour. To do so, you could just produce one ultra-long-exposure frame using your camera's bulb mode, but there are several problems with that. First of all, if any problem occurs during this time (ie your camera shuts down, the memory card has a write issue) you will lose all the information, which can be a tremendous annoyance if you had a three-hour exposure underway. In addition, if your picture has any other elements that might be brighter than the stars, such as the tent in my shot, (which it should have to make it an interesting image) these will be very; very overexposed if you use a shutter speed such as 60 minutes. Therefore, almost everyone doing star trail pictures uses the so-called stacking method, in which a number of images are taken, and then stacked to simulate a very long exposure.
Below, a step-by-step guide:
1. Set your camera up on a very sturdy tripod, and frame your composition. If possible, frame your shot before nightfall, since when the stars appear it will be very difficult to compose because of the lack of light.
2. Decide how long you want your total exposure to be. Keep in mind that the stars will be moving along concentric circles centered on the northern star. Therefore, if you point to the north, you will need a much longer exposure for your trails to be a of a given length, and conversely, it you will need a shorter exposure as you point more to the south.
3. Now, you will divide this total exposure time you chose into many shorter exposures. I like to use 2 minutes, but use anything that does not overexpose any parts of the frame, while trying to stay under 8 minutes or so. So say you wanted a total exposure time of 56 minutes, which would be 28 2 minute exposures. You will achieve this by setting your camera to the bulb setting in manual mode and then connecting an intervalometer (50$ online). The intervalometer will send the signal to your camera to open and close the shutter every two minutes. The only reasons cameras are not able to do this natively, as well as many other features, is because manufacturers purposefully limit their functionality. So set your intervalometer to the desired exposure time and number of frames, and set the interval between frames to 0. (in my case: exposure time:2 min; number of shots: 28)
4. Set the focus to infinity manually and start the intervalometer. Wait until all the shots are taken.
5. Now the stacking: you will need to use a program that stacks the images by choosing the brightest pixel when there is a conflict. This will make sure the little pieces of star trails are all combined in the final image. I recommend startrails.exe for windows, but you can just google star trails stacking and you’ll find lots.
I'm going a little crazy today. I hope some enjoys this one since I used me as a model, ugh! LARGE IN SEPARATE WINDOW

Some of you have asked me several times already to do a tutorial on how to achieve these noseless-largemouth people. Here is my very simple way to do it. I hope it's understandable.

Lilliput Gardens tutorial--see profile for details
Used colors:
- Black Surface Primer, Vallejo
- Abyssal Blue, Scale75 nmm set (Abyssal)
- Bering Blue, Scale75 nmm set (Bering)
- Arctic Blue, Scale75 nmm set (Arctic)
- Abaddon Black, Citadel (Black)
- Necron Abyss, old Citadel Fundation (Necron)
- White Scar, Citadel (White)
1. layer of mix (Abyssal) and (Bering) 1:1 over primer on large area.
2. some glazes with (Abyssal) and (Black) to remove visible edges from 1.
3. layer of (Bering) and glazes of mix from 1. to smooth trasmisions on smaller area and edges.
4. layer of (Arctic) and glazes of (Bering) on the smallest area and edges.
5. dots of (White) on centers of reflections and glaze of mix (Necron) and (Black) to darker and add depth to the black.
Now for the arms...
I made a skinner blend, as you can not see here (white to translucent photographs really well), with the color change along the band so each slice I cut has the blend, and each arm starts white at the base and tappers to translucent at the point.
Make a small loop of wire, with a small piece below it and a bend in it (left of the picture). This will be embedded in the first arm, and make a strong suspension system.
Cut a small slice of your blend, and roll it into an elongated cone. Make a good note of the size of slice you used: you will cut the others to the same size.
Embed the wire (leaving the loop out) in the cone, and shape it with pleasing curves. Make a second cone, and attach it to the first, where the curvature in your wire is. Do it again. You now have a structure with three arms. If you are satisfied with their layout, bake them with the heat gun, using the wire loop and a tool to hold it.
It is easier with a relatively low number of arms, because the hot airflow will move them and you might need to intervene to get them back in the shape they were.
Open a photograph in photoshop and then.......
1) Duplicate the layer, for windows users, Ctrl J
2) Click on the new top layer. Change the layer blending mode to "color dodge".
3) Continuing to work with the top layer, select inverse, Ctrl I
4) DON'T be alarmed as the image will disappear (if not all, most of it)
5) Continuing to work with the same top layer, in your menu choose filter, blur, gaussian blur and set to approx 16.0 Choose high and low numbers so you can see the effect and choose what looks good to you.
6) you are done!!
If you want to make the lines and/or the image a little darker continue with this step.
1) Merge your two layers together. Duplicate the layer and with the top layer chosen change the layer blending to "multiply" and that will darken your creation.
Have fun and let me know if this has helped you.
