This is the Lounge Car of a French TGV train zipping through southern France.
I think of this photo every time I ponder California's Prop 1A, which would bring high-speed rail to the Golden State if the proposition is approved by voters on November 4.
If this isn't an attractive argument for high-speed rail, I don't know what is. Need more logic? Read my endorsement of Prop 1A on the Telstar Logistics blog.
InterCity train 691 rolls at speed through the reverse curves just south of the station at Hallein, Austria. IC 691 is pulled by an ÖBB 1144-class MU electric locomotive. IC 691 originates in Klagenfurt and is passing through Hallein without stopping. This intercity train is a mere 18 km (11 miles) away from its final destination of Salzburg.
A total of 215 members of the 1044 class locomotives were produced between 1976 and 1995. A rebuild program starting in the late Nineties and wrapping up in 2010 resulted in the establishment of the 1144 class for the rebuilt locomotives.
As I was shooting the Eastbound train, this Westbound train approached. AI Servo and I had the f-stop cranked as the sun was just breaking. Siemens-Duewag SD160 #2236

RAND plastic toy camera (Diana clone) from the 1960s, I have no clue as to where or when this cheap plastic camera came to me, was great fun using it, and was pleasantly surprised by how the photos came out.

66148, working the Aberthaw Power Station to Lindsey oil refinery empty oil tanks 620Q service, seen passing through Barry Station in the late afternoon. It makes a change to see an oil train (as opposed to coal) from Aberthaw. The power station uses a small quantity of fuel oil for the start up and stabilisation of the boiler combustion process.
The branch line to Barry Island can be seen on the left by the coloured light, which replaced a magnificent three arm gantry semaphore that was damaged in 2004.
On a beautiful afternoon in Oct of 1974 at Bensenville, Ill west of Chicago I found this SW1200 at the Milwaukke Road shop.

On 11th August 1956 a train loaded at Lillooet with lumber bound for Vancouver derailed in a narrow rock cutting while travelling at twice the posted speed. Five of the twelve boxcars were salvaged, the remaining seven stripped of useful material and dragged into Whistler’s temperate rainforest alongside the Cheakamus River, BC, Canada.
Here's a look from the waiting room on the opposite side, The empty track next to bright orange too will in a few hours have the first arriving train from Miami pull in. Oddly they're the ones that received the majority of the attention, however, our train did get a warm send off.

Freshly squeezed from the Alleghany Tunnel a west-bound stack train enters the beautiful curve at Tuckahoe, WV. Having crested the Alleghany grade it's now downhill all the way to Russell, KY.
Meanwhile, an enthusiastic conductor gives a friendly wave to the fans
The R train pulls into the 59th Street station. I've never been a huge fan of Subways (glorified buses on rails) but I have to admit the amount of people these trains move in and out of New York City every day is very impressive!

Best viewed in lightbox full screen. From the driver's cabin of a new Bombardier-Downer Rail EMU being tested by QR and shown to NZlanders as possible electric fleet for Auckland (part of my job at the time). I took the shot because it is not often you have the opportunity from this pov - similar to entry to the cabin of an aircraft.
