The etymological origin of the word for "window" in the various languages tells us something about the use os such object.
"Finestra" in Italian, "Fenêtre" in French, "Fenster" in German and "Fönster" in Swedish all derive from the Latin word "Fenestra" meaning "crack", a crack on the wall for the entry of light and air.
In most Germanic languages, the word for window is related to idea of air and wind, as the English word "Window" illustrates. The Danish word "Vindue" and the Norwegian "Vindu" all refer to the entry of air that a window allows. Curiously, the Spanish word "Ventana" has the same etymological meaning ("Vento" means "Wind" in Spanish).
Icelandic and Old German stress the eye shape of a window: "Vindauga" (wind eye) in the first, and "Augetora" (eye shaped door) in the case of the latter.
In Portugese, the word "Janela" derives from the Latin "Ianuela", the diminutive of "Ianua" (door). So, our windows are after all small doors.
Whatever the country and language, if you have ever been near a fireplace with poor suction, then you know what windows are for.
So, finally, what good is a closed window?

Covilhã being a university town, many people let their (mostly) spare rooms to students. The severe contrast of this scene seemed an interesting opportunity to test the ADOX CHS 100 II film, apparently the closest to the discontinued Silvermax
I haven't made my mind up yet, but this CHS 100 II seems pretty interesting. The contrast was so high that I had to manipulate it to get reasonable tone values, but the important thing is that both highlight and shadows details seem to be all there.

Εντοιχιαμένη σε πέτρα επιγραφή αναγράφει ως έτος ανεγέρσεως το 1903.

This is the first panorama I tried to make with only two shots from Nikkor 12-24 f / 4 at 12 (18) mm on the Nikon D300 11 years ago.
Reading by chance the comments under the first publication I saw an answer that I had given to a friend John Robokos that is, I would prefer to have more details in the shady places.
Knowledge, experience and advanced processing tools that have accumulated over the years have spawned the idea of reprocessing.
The result really was absolutely unexpected even for me to consider it a "different photo" !!!
Αυτό είναι το πρώτο πανόραμα το οποίο πριν 11 χρόνια δειλά-δειλά επιχείρησα να κάνω με δύο μόνον λήψεις από τον Nikkor 12-24 f/4 στα 12(18)mm επάνω στη Nikon D300.
Διαβάζοντας,κατά τύχη,τα σχόλια κάτω από την πρώτη δημοσίευση είδα μιάν απάντηση που είχα δώσει στον φίλο John Robokos ότι δηλαδή θα προτιμούσα να είχε περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες στα σκιερά μέρη.
Οι γνώσεις,η πείρα αλλά και τα προηγμένα επεξεργαστικά εργαλεία τα οποία συσσωρεύτηκαν όλα αυτά τα χρόνια γέννησαν την ιδέα της επανεπεξεργασίας.
Το αποτέλεσμα πραγματικά ήταν απολύτως απρόσμενο ακόμη και για μένα ώστε να την θεωρώ «άλλη φωτογραφία»

Παναγία Πελεκητή: Η «βασίλισσα» των Αγράφων
Είναι ένα από τα μοναστήρια που ξεχωρίζουν. Το τοπίο, η αρχιτεκτονική του, η ιστορία του καθιστούν την Ιερά Μονή της Παναγίας Πελεκητής προσκυνηματικό κέντρο. Βρίσκεται κτισμένη πάνω από την τεχνητή λίμνη Πλαστήρα στην Καρδίτσα και υπάγεται διοικητικά στη Μητρόπολη Φαναριοφερσάλων. Σύμφωνα με τα τελευταία ιστορικά στοιχεία, κτίστηκε πριν από περίπου πέντε αιώνες σε μια απόκρημνη, βραχώδη πλαγιά των Αγράφων, σε υψόμετρο 1.400 μέτρων, βορειοδυτικά του χωριού Καρίτσα.
Η ιστορία της Ιεράς Μονής Παναγίας Πελεκητής έχει συνδεθεί με την πορεία της περιοχής, η οποία συμμετείχε σε όλους τους αγώνες του Έθνους. Κατά την επανάσταση του 1821 η Καρίτσα καταστράφηκε από τους Τούρκους, ενώ το 1943 από τους Γερμανούς. Οι μοναχοί της μονής ήταν εκ των πρωταγωνιστών κατά την απελευθέρωση της Καρίτσας από τους Τούρκους, δημιουργώντας μια διαφορετική σχέση με τους κατοίκους.
Από την ίδρυσή της η μονή δέσποζε στα εκκλησιαστικά πράγματα της περιοχής αφού είχε αναγνωριστεί ως σταυροπηγιακή το 1606 από τον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη Ραφαήλ Β΄.
Πελεκητή ονομάστηκε καθώς τα κελιά της δημιουργήθηκαν μέσα στους βράχους σε τέσσερα επίπεδα, όπου οι μοναχοί ζούσαν και λειτουργούσαν το μοναστήρι, ενώ υπήρχε ακόμη και κρυφό σχολειό.

Tο διώροφο πετρόχτιστο αρχοντικό (κονάκι) με τους βοηθητικούς χώρους την αποθήκη (κουτσέκι) δεσπόζει στην ανατολική πλευρά χωριού Πατουλιά.Σύμφωνα με εντοιχιαμένη σε πέτρα επιγραφή στο κουτσέκι ως έτος ιδρύσεως
Αναγράφεται το 1903.
Το σπίτι δεν κατοικήθηκε ποτέ μόνιμα. Περιστασιακά σε αυτό ζούσαν οι ιδιοκτήτες τους. Προσφέρθηκε όμως χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη από εκείνους, σε κατοίκους του χωριού που οι Γερμανοί την περίοδο της κατοχής έκαψαν τα σπίτια τους.
Στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του΄60 για διάστημα 6 μηνών το σπίτι απέκτησε ζωή αφού εκεί γυρίστηκε η θρυλική ελληνική ταινία “Το χώμα βάφτηκε κόκκινο”
Το κο(υ)τσέκι είναι, λέει, τούρκικη λέξη και σημαίνει αποθήκη για τα γεννήματα, καλαμπόκια και στάρια όμως στις δεκαετίες 1950-60 στεγάστηκε σε μία αίθουσά του το δημοτικό σχολείο όπου στοιβάζονταν 116!!!!!! Παιδιά.

Πυρσόγιαννη
Η Πυρσόγιαννη είναι κτισμένη στις πλαγιές της κορυφής Στενό (1900μ) της οροσειράς του Γράμμου, λίγο ψηλότερα από το σημείο ένωσης του Γοργοπόταμου με τον μεγάλο ποταμό της περιοχής αυτής, το Σαραντάπορο. Είναι κτισμένη αμφιθεατρικά, σε σημείο με άριστη θέα προς τα γύρω βουνά και δάση, λουσμένη όλη την ημέρα από τον ήλιο και περιβάλεται από πυκνό δρυοδάσος. Απέχει 27,1 χλμ από την Κόνιτσα.
Αποτελεί την έδρα του Δήμου Μαστοροχωρίων, την έδρα του Πολυδύναμου Αστυνομικού Τμήματος της περιοχής (κυρίως για φύλαξη των συνόρων) και διαθέτει τις βασικές υποδομές εστίασης και φιλοξενίας τουριστών. Τόπος αναφοράς του χωριού είναι και το Ξενοδοχείο της Πυρσόγιαννης που χτίστηκε με δαπάνες των ίδιων των Πυρσογιαννιτών.
"Η αδελφότητα των Πυρσογιαννιτών"(στεγάζεται στο κτήριο που διακρίνεται πρώτο κατά σειρά στο κέντρο της εικόνας και από πίσω του είναι το κτήριο του Δημαρχείου) είναι το καμάρι των κατοίκων της δεδομένου ότι έχει επιδείξει και συνεχίζει να επιδεικνύει σημαντικό έργο.
Στολίδι του χωριού είναι ο Άι-Γιώργης , μια επιβλητική πέτρινη εκκλησία με εντυπωσιακό καμπαναριό(διακρίνεται στην κορυφή)
Έχει υψόμετρο περίπου 840-860 μ. και πληθυσμό περίπου 100 κατοίκους.
Η κυριαρχία της πέτρας είναι εμφανέστατη,πράγμα απολύτως φυσικό μιάς και το χωριό αυτό ήταν η πατρίδα αμέτρητων λαϊκών μαστόρων της πέτρας, οι οποίοι για περισσότερο από 3 αιώνες ταξίδευαν αρχικά σε όλη την Ελλάδα και αργότερα σε όλο τον κόσμο, χτίζοντας αρχοντικά, εκκλησίες, γεφύρια, σχολεία, νερόμυλους, καμπαναριά, χάνια, φάρους, τζαμιά, μοναστήρια, ελαιοτριβεία, πηγάδια, φούρνους, αυλές, φράχτες, καλντερίμια κλπ. Ύστερα ήρθαν το μπετόν και η άσφαλτος... Οι μάστορες ήταν οργανωμένοι σε μπουλούκια και για να συνεννοούνται μεταξύ τους χρησιμοποιούσαν μια συνθηματική γλώσσα, τα περιβόητα "κουδαρίτικα", γιαυτό λέγονταν και Κουδαραίοι.
Αφιερωμένο στην τέχνη αυτή είναι το "Μουσείο Ηπειρωτών Μαστόρων" που στεγάζεται στο παλιό σχολείο του χωριού και συγκεντρώνει σημαντικά εκθέματα και αρχεία από την ζωή των μαστόρων(αριστερά όπως κοιτάμε την εικόνα κάτω από το καμπαναριό του Αι-Γιώργη).

Auxlilary South Gate was built at 1884A.D. (starting from 1882 A.D.) by government of Chin Dynasty. It is an auxiliary gate in addition to 4 gates (east gate/west gate/south gate and north gate) surrounding the Taipei city.
The Little South Gate is a Historical landmark located at Yanping S Rd, On the the roundabout intersection of the Patriotic West Road, Bo'ai Special Zone, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City 100, Taiwan.

Ο αρσανάς του Αγίου Όρους
Ο αρσανάς (ταρσανάς) είναι δημώδης όρος της κοινής ναυτικής γλώσσας.
Με τον όρο αυτό περιγράφονται κυρίως μικρές ναυπηγικές μονάδες,νεώρια και πολλοί όρμοι στο Άγιον Όρος όπου υπάρχουν ή υπήρχαν παλαιότερα παρόμοιες εγκαταστάσεις.Βρίσκονται στο πλησιέστερο προσβάσιμο από θαλάσσης μέρος εκάστης Μονής. Περιλαμβάνουν τα λεγόμενα ψαρόσπιτα στο ισόγειό τους,δε, φυλάσσονται οι βάρκες,που χρησιμοποιούνται για το ψάρεμα.
Εκεί,επίσης,επιβιβάζονται και αποβιβάζονται όσοι χρησιμοποιούν τα πλοία της γραμμής για τις μετακινήσεις τους από και προς τις Μονές.
Στην φωτογραφία διακρίνεται ο αρσανάς της Ι.Μ.Ζωγράφου.
The"arsanas" of Mount Athos.
Arsanas (tarsanas) is a public term of the common nautical language.
This term mainly describes small shipbuilding units, shipyards and many bays in Mount Athos where existing or formerly similar facilities exist. They are located at the closest accessible by sea part of each Monastery. They include the so-called fish houses on their ground floor, and the boats used for fishing are kept.
There, also, those who use the liners on their way to and from the Monasteries are boarded and disembarked.
In the photo, is distinguished the "arsanas" of H.Monastery Zografou .

Tο αρχιτεκτονικό αυτό “τζιβαερικό” είναι προσωπικό επίτευγμα του σεμνώς εικονιζομένου πατρός Αθανασίου Κούτσια εξ αρχής έως πέρατος. Ενός παναξίου Έλληνος ιερέως του οποίου το πράγματι τιμημένο ράσο σπάνια θα το δεί κανέις να μην έχει το ανέμισμα της αεικινησίας όπως σ'αυτά τα ελάχιστα δευτερόπλεπτα στην διάρκεια των οποίων μου έδωσε ευχή να τον φωτογραφίσω.
Το θρησκευτικό κτίσμα του 1903,πρίν λίγα χρόνια ήταν σε κακό χάλι εξωτερικά με επιχρίσματα να καλύπτουν την ωραιότητα της πέτρινης υφής και εσωτερικά με μυριάδες προβλημάτων να θέτουν σε κίνδυνο το εκκλησίασμα αλλά και τα κειμήλια του ναού.
Αυτός το οραματίστηκε,αυτός με θαυματουργικό τρόπο,βρήκε τα κεφάλαια εκ του μηδενός και αυτός με απεριόριστη προσωπική εργασία διότι είναι και “επαγγελματίας” τεχνίτης καταπιανόμενος και καταφέρνοντας τα πάντα,το έφερε εις πέρας πρό διετίας παραδίδοντάς το στις επόμενες γενεές εδραίο τε και κεκοσμημένον εις δόξαν του Τριαδικού Θεού και των προστατών της ενορίας Πρωτοκορυφαίων Αποστόλων Πέτρου και Παύλου.
Με τις ίδιες μηδενικές δυνατότητες και προϋποθέσεις ξεκίνησε και στέριωσε ένα αξιοζήλευτο για επαρχία κοινωνικό παντοπωλείο αναλαμβάνοντας μεριμνικές ευθύνες οι οποίες δεν αναλογούν στην Εκκλησία αλλά στο κράτος παρέχοντας κουφισμόν σε χειμαζομένους,πενομένους και ποικιλοτρόπως εμπεριστάτους αδελφούς μας. Ξέρω ότι θα σκοντάψω στην σεμνότητα και την γνήσια ταπείνωσή του αλλά η αλήθεια είναι ο ίδιος ο Χριστός “Εγώ ειμί η οδός και η αλήθεια” Ανεπιφύλακτα κατατάσσεται στην σωρεία των Ελήνων κληρικών οι οποίοι,μέσα από αφανείς για τους πολλούς προσωπικούς Γολγοθάδες συνεχίζουν αγόγγυστα την Σταυρική παράδοση και πορεία του τιμημένου ράσου έχοντας βαθιά μέσα τους ριζωμένη την βεβαιότητα της Αναστάσεως δικαιώνουν απολύτως τον “κλήρον” του Θεού! (από όπου και προέρχεται η λέξη κληρικός)! Πάτερ,εύχεσθε υπέρ ημών!

Amaglebis Eklesia, also known as the Church of the Ascension, is a Georgian Orthodox church located in Ganisi, near Gudauri in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti Region, Georgia. Αυτό είχαμε πάει να επισκεφτούμε μαζί με την σύζυγο όταν προέκυψε και η συναρπαστική προαναφερθείσα συνάντηση με τα αξιοθαύμαστα ζώα.
