Located at the gardens of Tokyo National Museum this house dates (according to the museum) to 1742 when it was built as what is called a shoin (書院) in Japanese.

A shoin is, historically speaking, a hall and a place for sūtra studies at a temple - and this building began its history as a shoin at the Myogen'in Buddhist temple, in Oharucho, Aichi prefecture, so it was probably meant just for that. (Today the word shoin rather means a drawing room or study, but those words ill captures the nature of such a big hall as this.) The house is 15 metres long and 9 metres deep, consists of just two room and a surrounding corridor.

The museum acquired the building in 1933.

Panorama of Hamnoy with its majestic peaks of the Lofoten Wall, the fjord, the swerving bridge towards Sakrisoy and Reine and Eliassen Rorbuer sheltered by the mightiest peak, where we had established our HQ for our second Lofoten excursion :)

After an entire night of fighting elements and howling storm we woke up to a tranquil, white winter morning at Ballstad, ready to start our exploration :)

abandoned traditional stone cottage in the Scottish Caingorms. Its location, the way its natural construction materials merge back into the landscape they were taken from and its beautiful way of decaying really touched me and madem me think of how we have become so detached of the landscapes we live in, building with materials which are universal and characterless, losing local flair and culture.

the amazing location and landscape of Reine on Moskenes island, Lofoten archipelago are already well known. But sometimes one simply gets lucky during the short period visiting there and the clouds decide to pull all the strings putting a celestial alegretto vivace on display :)).

Hamnoy short moments before dusk on a perfect day.

Lofoten worlds where houses often are just a stone throw apart yet divided by a waterway - be it fjord or sea strait.

Interesting are also the distinct and different weathermoods which may occur all together.

Pura Dalem Penunggekan, a few kilometers. away from Bangli, Bail is a temple for the death.

The walls surrounding the temple show, in relief, many frightening representations of what awaits sinners and evildoers in the afterlife.

This temple with its dramatic images is a sort of unique among all the thousands of temples im Bali.

The temples for the dead are laid out in Bali outside of towns, similar to the cemeteries in our western culture. because

Hindu-Balinese cremate their dead, there are no cemeteries here.

Only the smaller Islamic and Christian communities in Bali have their own cemeteries outside of their settlements.

Derneburg/Lowersaxony GER

Goslar/Harz

The Imperial Palace of Goslar (German: Kaiserpfalz Goslar) is a historical building complex at the foot of the Rammelsberg hill in the south of the town of Goslar north of the Harz mountains, central Germany. It covers an area of about 340 by 180 metres. The palace grounds originally included the Kaiserhaus, the old collegiate church of St. Simon and St. Jude, the palace chapel of St. Ulrich and the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche). The Kaiserhaus, which has been extensively restored in the late 19th century, was a favourite imperial residence, especially for the Salian emperors.

Lately, Santorini, Amorgos and all the Cyclades have been suffering from thousands of earthquakes. The volcano and the tectonic faults in the area are increasing the concern. 10,000 residents have already abandoned their homes. The opinions of scientists are divided on the outcome of the phenomena. Let us pray that God will not allow disasters.

Taman Ayung, meaning "beautiful garden", is the second-largest temple in Bali. It is a World Heritage Site as one of the five sites defined by UNESCO in the Subak cultural landscape of Bali. Taman Ayun Temple is unique, both in aesthetics and as an essential part of the local irrigation system, or subak.

The tall, multi-tiered shrines with black thatched roofs are called Meru. They are built in odd-numbered tiers (3, 5, 7, 9, or 11), symbolizing the sacred Mount Meru in Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. These shrines honor different gods and ancestral spirits. Balinese temples, known as pura, are not only places of worship but also vital cultural centers. The layout often follows mandala principles, with inner and outer sanctums. Rituals, offerings (canang sari), and temple festivals are central to Balinese Hinduism, which blends indigenous animism with Indian Hindu influences.
