It was 1974. Those of you who remember that era may wonder what on earth we were doing in Rostock during the height of the Cold War.

Well it started out innocently enough. The Norwegian and the American decided one day to hitchhike from Copenhagen to Germany. Alas, we neglected to bring a map. But how could we go wrong? Just head south, and all the traffic would be going toward the ferry at Rødbyhvn. Or so we thought.

We accidentally stumbled into Rostock on the anniversary of the Russian Revolution, a State holiday celebrated throughout the German Democratic Republic. It seemed that everyone in Rostock was hanging out, drinking cheap beer, eating cheap chicken. We actually blended in pretty well because no one was expecting to see Western interlopers. And expectation affects perception, perhaps more so than we would like to admit.

We befriended the kid in the photo above. Or perhaps he befriended us. His name is Manfred. For six US dollars, he sold us a heaping pile of Ost-Marks. Now we too could pig out on cheap chicken and cheap beer. And we did.

It was one of those Fridays that we did things around the house, and took care of ourselves. And, soon we'll welcome the Sabbath with a festive meal.

Lucy, the resident chiots, is now 9. It's hard to believe it's been that long since she was a wee 7 pound puppy giving us much grief. We got her from the pound 2 months after we bought this house, she was 7 weeks old. After overcoming Parvo the first weekend we had her, she grew into the most wonderful dog. Chiot's means "puppy" in French, and she would tear around the gardens like a wild horse - hence the name "Chiot's Run".

Hi All,

Thanks to those who came down to the task at Sandy Smith yesterday; fortunately the weather was better than I had seen forecast!

It was a good task; it was nice to see so many of the tree we planted last year surviving and also to see more trees planted to reinforce them. The ditching crew also did a good job and Malcolm demonstrated that a little mud and water can go a long way!

There will be NO TASK next week because of Easter. After that normal service will be resumed with the ‘tartan mowing’ task at Maulden Heath on Tuesday 10th April; meet at the Picnic Area at 10am.

So as we gathered together for morning prayers little did we expect the bombshell that was about to shatter our dreams and aspirations. Mr. T. spared nothing in blatantly announcing that we were only to work until lunchtime! This was to get us acclimatised to not working at all next week. Well, the little group of Dave’s cuddled together whimpering, holding hands, their little knees and chins quivering in the wind. Couldn’t we stay just a bit after lunch if we promised to be good and do what we were told. ‘No’ came the stern reply in Mr. T’s eyes. We could tidy up the two tree enclosures, plant another 20 trees, a few of us could play in the mud but then we would have to leave.

So we trudged off to woods. Mr. T’s heart softened a little and he let us form a ‘bucket line’ to take water from the ditch and fill a couple of large plastic Trugs so we could water in the 25 trees we were to plant. So we all got a chance to play in the water.

Three of us went off to clear another ditch of obstructions and see who could get the muddiest while the remainder cleared away the undergrowth that was overgrowing the fences and plant 15 trees in one and the remaining 15 in the other.

And so by lunchtime all 40 trees were planted and it was time to leave. The Moffatt tried to do a runner, taking a hand saw and disappearing along the bank in search of offending tree roots to remove but eventually he was called to heel. Mr. T. finally took pity on us and allowed us to take home a few logs to play with over the Easter break.

Many thanks to all who came, hope you get over the withdrawal symptoms and see you in two weeks time for some tartan mowing - och aye the g’nu.

And yes, Jackie did make me strip off on the patio before putting my clothes in the washing machine and hosing me down!

Admirable summary Mr W and cakes too were more than admirable even though I restrained myself from partaking in the fruit cake. (Mr T's donuts were also highly desirable) Hope you are feeling better and will soon regain your country seat.

This is a tribute to English football players in the years '50 - '70, when this sport was still not been ravaged by billionaire sponsorship (there weren't advertising on the players shirts) and astonishing salaries. Even teams of small towns like Wolves, Blackpool and Derby County could have the opportunity to win cups and championships. The title of this album is inspired by the book "Those Feet: A Sensual History of English Football" by David Winner. For this album I selected old videos from internet (preferring those with altered colors and very low resolution). These photos were taken on my personal computer monitor using an expired film.

The Karongwe Private Game Reserve comprises 8 500ha of African bushveld created by private landowners. In 1998 one decided to drop fences to be able to restore the land, which has been agricultural land, back to those conditions which are believed to constitute its natural state, maintaining the balance of species and flora and fauna. The Karongwe Association was founded in 2001 and the members are also the directors of Karongwe Game who owns and protects the animal species. Currently there are over 40 mammal species in the Reserve, including the Big Five Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Buffalo. The Reserve maintains a clean buffalo project.

The association wants to ensure the preservation of fauna, flora and animal species for the future generations. Conservation projects try constantly to achieve this goal. Community projects try to involve the natives in nature projects to help understand how important the preservation of nature is. Research projects working with overseas volunteers try to bring the importance of nature conservation into the international markets to let the world know how precious the African wildlife and nature is.
