This is from a drive home from work back in January. It's another one of those shots that just got forgotten in a file. I'm not positive, but I think that is Castle Mountain to the left of centre. Can any of you confirm that for me?

He wasn't sure about having his portrait taken, but after I showed him the shot on the back of the camera, he relaxed a little.....

A female bordered mantis (I think Stagmomantis limbata) grooming. This is the time of year we find adults in our yard. In this species, the females don't fly (although they have wings, they're not big enough to get them airborne), so if I spot one I can usually find it again. They are usually either green or brown, but sometimes have markings that are pink or even purple. Photographed on a black background then released where found -- in the garden right outside my front door.

Wish I had something to say about this shot. It's an HDR of one of my favorite intersections around madison. Oh yes, it's also a footheld 5 exposure combo. I balanced the camera on my foot.
HDR shots are fun to take and cool to look at, but they do create a lot of meaningless photography. I took this shot because I could, not because I should. But. I just can't stop looking it.

I think Melbourne might be the only city in the world that has a public holiday for a horse race. Today is Melbourne Cup Day.
These three posters from My Head’s A Jungle that I photographed on Saturday pretty accurately sum up my feelings about horse racing.
Horses bred for racing have a specific purpose – to win and be profitable. This creates a conflicting interest with the horse’s welfare.
Some quick facts:
- On average, one horse is killed on Australian racetracks every 2.5 days from racing related injuries – and these are just the deaths we learn of. Plenty more happen in training and trials, or when injured horses are taken from the track to be later killed behind the scenes
- Over 10,000 horses vanish from the industry each year, most ending up in knackeries or slaughterhouses, known by the industry as ‘wastage’.
- Tongue ties, bits, spurs and whips are standard racing implements, causing horses to experience fear, pain and distress
- The majority of racehorses suffer bleeding in the lungs (EIPH), stomach ulcers and inflammatory airway disease
- Whilst in training, horses are kept confined to stalls for approximately 22 hours a day
In addition, I am sick and tired of the gambling advertisements that proliferate on the TV this time of year, gambling addictions ruin so many families, and I think gambling advertising should be banned completely.
Anyway, rant over.

This is in a weird way a self portrait :)
Cause I often have the feeling I am different from the people around me.
Sometimes that can be a lonely feeling but other times it's a good feeling!
The good thing about it is that my brain walks no ordinary path and comes up with the craziest ideas (photo ideas mainly!).
And there popped another crazy idea in my mind this afternoon... I'm gonna buy me a new lens today :)

Die 193 580, 581, 807, 808 und 809 werben mit verschiedenen Tieren auf den europäischen Schienen für diesen wichtigen Ansatz, der den ökologischen Vorteil der Schiene hervorhebt. Die aktuellen Entwicklungen auf dem deutschen Schienennetz sind dafür aber nicht gerade förderlich, mehr Güter auf die Schiene zu verlagern, da die dringend nötigen Neu- und Ausbauten in einem unglaublichen Schneckentempo vonstatten gehen, wodurch diese Ziele erstmal unerreichbar bleiben. Trotzdem dürfen wir uns in Deutschland glücklich schätzen, den buntesten Güterverkehr auf unserem schönen Planeten zu haben, denn wo sonst fahren so viele verschiedene Unternehmen mit so vielen verschiedenen Baureihen und Farbgebungen als in Deutschland? Mir fällt da in dieser Masse kein anderes Land ein.
Auch auf der Rheintalbahn, einer der Hauptkorridorstrecken in Deutschland, profitieren wir bzw. ich von dieser Buntheit des Güterverkehrs. So brachte die hier selten zu sehende 193 807 am 23. Februar einen Getreidezug aus Hegyeshalom nach Basel. Kurz nach der Durchfahrt des Zuges in Graben-Neudorf klickte mein Auslöser.

I think this has been rolling with this damage for quite a while, as there is no way it could have that and have such a straight wheel right underneath! I did kind of think this could be the end of the line if the owner didn't care for it, but happily its still taxed and going strong. Spare front wings must be pretty pricey these days.

You'd think with all the rain we've had I'd be so fed up I wouldn't bother with this but I like trying to capture moving water! And yes it was raining! Its a small fountain of water bubbling up through a large rock in a lovely secluded arbour a few yards from a fairly busy area.
