Hello! This is Doug MacRostie and I would like to share some pictures from my parents, Bud and Elaine.

My Grandpa (Mom's Dad) has been collecting maple sap to boil into syrup for something like 1000 years (...), and the tradition is continued by my folks.

I am pouring sap into the boil-pans while dad sets the fire.

Don't let these images decieve you - I actually did/do very little to night in terms of helping them - they are the ones who trudged through the feets and feets of snow, collecting the gallons and gallons of sap.

I just showed up and helped for the camera :p

This jug is warming up to pour hot Maple syrup into.

What will go on my stack of cornmeal hotcakes?

Will it be the Alaga Syrup or the Real Maple Syrup.

Decisions, Decisions!

Imagine baking maple syrup. Then pouring maple syrup on top of that. Then eat it with a spoonful of maple syrup. That's how good these cookies are.

During the maple syrup season, pipes are continually drawing sap from the maple trees down in a ravine to this container. Having a continuous flow in sterile pipes (instead of buckets) means the cut doesn't get cut or clogged by infection or bugs. You can increase your yield from 1 pint (using buckets) to a half gallon (using sterile pipes) per maple tree. It takes a lot more energy & equipment to use this method, but much less human physical effort.

maple syrup was once harvested by tapping a maple tree through the bark and letting the sap run into a bucket, which required daily collecting and a whole lot of labor when you're collecting from thousands of trees. these days, the taps flow into plastic pipelines that usually use the force of gravity to send the sap into holding tanks.

This is my humming bird on Torani syrup bottle.

It was on the bottle for about a year.

It was a national contest with only 2 winners, myself and one other person.

5% of profits from all bottles sold will help towards after school activities.

The bottle is no longer sold with this label but bottles with new labels are still donating profits.

I won many awards and recognitions for this and now I can put on my resume I designed a label for a bottle.

Always take a chance at something even when you think you're going to fail because you'll miss 100% of the shots you don't try and make.
