The pavilion at Chichester Road, home to Cleethorpes Cricket Club. Pictured during a 78-run victory for the hosts over All Rounder Cricket Yorkshire South Premier League rivals Doncaster Town, who are about to bat. The hosts, put in on a humid, cloudy afternoon, struggled on their vast ground to 156, a total the locals felt was about 50 short of defendable. But they reckoned without an abysmal batting display from Doncaster, who slumped to 40-5 after 20 overs. Australian professional Michael Topp (18) and Joe Gallagher (15no) attempted to shut up shop, and frustrated the Cleethorpes attack for some time, but when the former was dismissed the last four batters all departed without scoring.
Match statistics: Cleethorpes 156 off 44.1 overs (Wesley Marshall 45, Ian Mansfield 41, Michael Topp 3-25, Luke Townsend 3-37, James Ward 2-30) 12pts beat Doncaster Town 78 off 42 overs (James Ward 18, Michael Topp 18, Harry Clewett 3-8, Paul Sunley 3-19, Alex Willerton 3-20) 0pts by 78 runs. Doncaster Town won the toss and elected to field. Admission: free. Programme: 8 pages (donation). Attendance: 71. Tea: £1. Ham & cheese toasted ciabatta: £2.50.
Cleethorpes Cricket Club opened Chichester Road, their present home, in 1931. They moved a short distance from a plot near Sherburn Street, on which the local council wanted to build an estate of houses. At the time, Chichester Road was on the southern extremity of the town. Hardy's Farm, now covered by a primary school, was adjacent. Visitors Scunthorpe Town won the opening match on June 13th 1931. Cleethorpes bought the eight-acre site 24 years later from Sidney Sussex College. It has been developed considerably since the Fifties, when it was a small enclosure with a dilapidated pavilion. The outfield was expanded in 1959, a replacement pavilion built in 1963 and squash courts - totalling three - added in 1978 and 2003. Chichester Road has staged Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire first class matches, along with Minor Counties fixtures involving Lincolnshire. Cleethorpes have played in the Grimsby & District, Lincolnshire County and Yorkshire Premier leagues. In 2016, Cleethorpes became a founder member of the Yorkshire South Premier League, an ECB competition.

(Page 3 of 21) A commemorative booklet celebrating the opening of the extension to Keighley's Central Library on the 25th March 1961, by the Mayor Alderman John S. Bell. The extension comprised a Children's Library, stackroom, work room, staff room, kitchen, stores, lecture hall, three study rooms and toilets. The main contractor for the work was Wm. Mallinson and Sons (Lockwood) Ltd. of Huddersfield, with various subcontractors. The opening ceremony was followed by afternoon tea in the Municipal Hall across the road. The booklet measures approximately 190 mm by 125 mm. It is staple bound with a pale blue chord sash.
The item is part of the John Normington Collection, donated to Keighley and District Local History Society by John's daughter Liz Hornby in September 2021.
John Normington was born in Keighley on 26th May 1929 and grew up in the Exley Head area of the town. He was joined by younger brother William five years later. John attended Ingrow Primary School and later won a scholarship for Keighley Boys’ Grammar School. His interest in music started with playing the drums at the age of six, then swapping to take up the piano.
His first job was at Keighley Library, where he remained (except for a break for National Service in 1947-49) until taking early retirement in March 1984. He was made Chief Assistant (Deputy) in 1953 having studied at the Leeds School of Librarianship. He ultimately became a lecturer himself in Cataloguing and Classification. He worked alongside local historian Ian Dewhirst for many years. Six months after he retired from Keighley Library in 1984, he took up the part-time role of Library Assistant at South Craven School.
One of his passions beyond the library was his music, and in performing. In the 1940s and 1950s he both acted with and played the drums for the Ingrow St. John’s Parish Church Players. Later he played the piano (and occasionally the drums) for Keighley Amateurs (of which he was a member for 72 years). Utilising his musical skills, he joined the Good Time Jazz Band in 1978. Another passion was potholing, having been introduced to it in the late 1940s, and he joined the Craven Pothole Club in 1952. He served as President of the Club in 1982 and as treasurer from 1984 to 1992. He was also a member of the 40 Club, the Grafton Club and Haworth Round Table. John died on 11th January 2020 at the age of 90.
