After running all the way to the Mexican border at Laredo for a company town hall, the Royal Canadian Pacific (CPKC 41B-25) is eastbound on UP rails through Houston, deadheading back to Calgary. The train splits Winter Street along UP’s Houston Sub Main 1, making a daytime appearance through the city after a ridiculous sequence of delays encountered the previous day & overnight.
With CP 1401 having led the way south, FP9 #4107 was poised to lead back north- a fairly rare occurrence. As the train made its way along the Laredo Sub, 4107’s horn lever broke off. Running restricted speed for a bit, they stopped at an industry wye in Alice, TX to spin the power, and continued with 1401 now in the lead again- so much for shooting 4107.
The train made it to the Rosenberg Sub just after sunset, following right behind the MMX-181 priority stack train. Just after I had flashed both trains at the SP depot in Wharton a bit before 10:30pm, both trains stopped on the main at Wharton siding to allow a southbound into the hole that had barely departed the yard at Kendleton just ahead.
The southbound was KCS 4805 (the first KCS unit to receive the CPKC paint scheme), suffering from a shifted load in its train and major electrical issues which had clogged up Kendleton for several hours. Once 4805 pulled into Wharton siding, 181 proceeded north to start its work in Kendleton, but the dispatcher instructed 41B’s crew to assist the stricken 4805; 4805’s crew had begun to cycle the unit’s lights at random intervals. I jumped ahead to flash 41B again, setting up at a bridge just south of Kendleton… and a 2+ hour wait ensued while 4805’s issues were attempted to be resolved.
41B eventually pulled, arriving in Kendleton just after 1am. A new crew had been called at 11pm, and was on board by 1:30 for the run over UP rails through Houston. 181 had just completed its work around the same time, and had been lined out from Kendleton up to the turnout onto the UP in Rosenberg. 41B would continue to follow 181, and both trains were lined up to McHattie siding, immediately south of the UP turnout at the Tower 17 interlocking.
I jumped ahead to Richmond for a 3rd & final flash attempt, but despite both trains being ready to go, it soon became apparent that UP’s TD2 dispatcher wasn’t ready to bring 181 (and by extension 41B) onto his main at Rosenberg. Once a UP eastbound was lined through Tower 17, I called it a night and made it home a bit after 3am, assuming 41B would be long gone by sunrise.
Well, after the eastbound UP ZLBHO came through, despite no other opposing trains between Rosenberg and Houston, 181 and 41B kept sitting at McHattie… for over 4 hours.
By sunrise, 181 had bumped up to Richmond siding, just on the opposite end of Tower 17 from McHattie. Judging from this, it appeared that the pair of trains would finally get moving… but only now, UP decided to run a fleet of FIVE westbounds out of Houston toward Rosenberg.
Delays for CPKC traffic over the UP in Texas aren’t anything new, and it wasn’t unforeseen with 41B being a deadhead move, but why the business train along with their highest priority stack train were held up for this long is anyone’s guess. A working theory is that UP had some issue in the Houston terminal to where they didn’t want any inbound traffic, but I guess the world outside the Spring Dispatch Center may never know.
Once this westbound fleet ran through, 181 got on the move east, and after waiting for over six hours, 41B finally swung onto the UP at Rosenberg, heading into Houston in prime morning sunlight. Smooth sailing now… right?
Well by this time, the 2300 crew on board was getting close to running on their HOS; making the next crew change point in Beaumont had long gone out the window. After running no more than 35 miles from Kendleton, 41B stopped once again in west Houston for a crew swap, which was done in around half an hour.
I had woken up a little after the train pulled from Rosenberg, and after getting ready for a later start at work that day, I found I could swing one more shot of 41B making its way through the terminal. I pulled into the pseudo-street running along Winter Street as the tail end of the 181 was passing, and a short wait later, I had bagged 41B again after flashing it just 14 hours earlier, merely 40 miles down the line. We chased the train up to Belt Junction, where we got cloud-banged.

Union Pacific's Ogden and Evanston locals swap trains in Echo, Utah the morning of Aug. 27, 2010. This was a common practice at the time, which provided crews with the ability to spend more time at home with their families. In 2019, PSR put a stop to it.

It matches my darling Red Riding Hood one from Darlene =) And the Alice in Wonderland memo has been on my wishlist for a while, I'm happy to finally have it!

i started making these for the holiday ornament swap (i'm in group 19) but ended up making twice what i needed so that qylaar could also have some at renegade. they ended up being pretty popular :)
and yes, they are hanging from my shower curtain bar on skirt hangers. i hadn't (and still haven't) put the tree up yet...
all pieced and ready for quilting... oh this is by far the most TREASURED item i have ever made. i **ADORE** how it turned out... quirks and all!
