A sunset over Södermalm in Stockholm. The evening was nice but the clouds didn't really work to my advantage, as I recall.
Sunset or sundown is the daily disappearance of the Sun below the horizon in the west as a result of Earth's rotation.
The time of sunset is defined in astronomy as the moment when the trailing edge of the Sun's disk disappears below the horizon in the west. The ray path of light from the setting Sun is highly distorted near the horizon because of atmospheric refraction, making the sunset appear to occur when the Sun’s disk is already about one diameter below the horizon. Sunset is distinct from dusk, which is the moment at which darkness falls, which occurs when the Sun is approximately eighteen degrees below the horizon. The period between sunset and dusk is called twilight.
Locations north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle experience no sunset or sunrise at least one day of the year, when the polar day or the polar night persist continuously for 24 hours.
Sunset creates unique atmospheric conditions such as the often intense orange and red colors of the Sun and the surrounding sky.
After about 50km of heavy pack hiking in 2 days, the final 1 hour haul up to the "Nublet" in BC's Assiniboine provincial park took the last bit of energy I had left. After over an hour of trying to find an interesting comp I settled with this, and posted up for sunset. My buddy Steve and I started cursing due to the lack of any sort of light show, so I went up to his tripod area and checked out what he came up with. As we talked I notice some pink starting to form where no clouds were before and told him to "GET READY!" I then sprinted with my bum foot back to my still set up camera, and rattled off the best shot of my trip.
Such a sick place and I'll definitely be back. Preferably taking the helicopter in and saving my energy next time!
Thanks for looking!
I met up with Shaun again last night and headed up to Stowes Hill and the Cheesewring. To say it was a wee bit on the chilly side was an understatement with a glacially cold wind whipping around the hill, and I was thankful that I still had my hat and gloves in my pocket from winter! Unfortunately most of the lovely fluffy clouds that had been there earlier in the evening had moved on, but it was still nice to get out.
This wasn't originally going to be my shot for today, but it turns out last night there was a spectacular sunset in Magic Kingdom last night. I'll try to give a tour of it this week, with a different shot in a different location each day!
Nestled in one of the many coves in Bullfrog Bay, a houseboat is draped in the golden light of a sunset made more dramatic by the cloudy remnants of unsettled weather earlier in the afternoon.
