The Vif String Quartet is an Edmonton-based string ensemble that loves to make music together and share it with others. We take our name from the French word for bright, lively or vibrant – a term that captures our attitude and approach to music-making.

Members of the quartet perform regularly with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Alberta Baroque Ensemble and other ensembles, and have music degrees from the University of Alberta, Schulich School of Music at McGill University, and the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.

I'm really happy with my String of Pearls. There are two new offshoots so my one strand might turn into three.

Yes, I wanted to share but I forgot I turned off saving any pics I take through Instagram... doh...

Yes, it's true. And it's so much easier this way. More virtual string art to come...

Music & Memory Book-to-Action Program: Community Reading and Civic Engagement

On April 16, 2015, Hayward High School's String Orchestra, led by Music Department Director Nicholas Tocca, performed at the Josephine Lum Lodge, a senior residence in Hayward operated by Eden Housing. They performed a wide-ranging repertoire, including memorable songs by George Gershwin ("Someone to Watch Over Me"), the Beatles ("Let it Be"), and invited seniors to sing along with a beautiful arrangement of "Amazing Grace." Bringing young and old together, the event was the first musical gathering of the series celebrating the healing power of music.

Listen to Your Heart! Read Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain by Oliver Sacks – and Help Enrich the Lives of Local Seniors with Music!

Gain knowledge about and promote programs that bring the healing power of music to local seniors and others who suffer from dementia and other medical conditions that isolate them from society and disconnect them from their memories, identities, and sense of purpose. Request a free copy of Musicophilia (while supplies last) at the Hayward Main Library – registration information below.

Book-to-Action encourages community members to read Musicophilia, a fascinating book that explores the place music occupies in the brain and how it affects the human condition.

On April 30, community members will expand their awareness of music’s impact on the brain by watching the moving and illuminating documentary “Alive Inside.”

Finally, we invite the community to engage in a civic engagement activity related to the significant role of music in our culture, ranging from the community-building aspects of making music in social environments, to the healing power of music to help people with dementia access their memories and identities.

"Alive Inside" addresses how seniors in modern American culture – which places a premium value on all aspects of being young – often lose their authority and sense of purpose in their later years. Bringing these ideas together, we invite members of the Hayward community to participate in community sing-alongs and other musical events with seniors at places where they live and gather.

By registering for at least one event, you are eligible to obtain a free copy of the featured book Musicophilia (while supplies last).

Some people don't like it. But I love the new Jerusalem string bridge. It makes lovely patterns across the sky.
