I don't know why I have developed this love of knitting. Sometimes the process is completely frustrating not to mention time consuming. But there is something beautiful about taking a ball of fibre and turning it into something else. There were times growing up when I felt that my interest in these dark domestic arts were something to hide away. As if being a modern woman I was supposed to eschew all handcrafts and instead focus on becoming some sort of high-powered something. But eventually I realized that it's sad that we no longer value these skills. Instead of mending our own clothes we throw them out to replace them with something new. Instead of custom tailoring our own clothes we get frustrated with ill-fitting garments. How can a mechanized world truly customize without exponential cost? I'm not ashamed of my abilities anymore. In fact I celebrate in them. I may not be particularly talented, but I make do. Maybe I can enjoy it now because it is not expected of me, I can choose to do this. It's a hobby, so I can treat it as a novelty rather than a chore. I don't know though. Finishing off some of these large projects can seem like a chore.
