I didn't want a pond. I thought it would be too much work. Turns out that it's not too much work. It's a marvellous place to sit beside and watch.
We're busy putting in an irrigation system so I've no opportunity to go for walks beyond my own yard.

I had to pause my New Buffalo narrative thanks to a week spent down in Kentucky helping my in-laws move, but here I am again with a few more pictures from that nice day on the Lake Michigan shore in New Buffalo, Michigan. I passed these people as I was heading back toward my car. There's a section of beach that has been flooded out thanks to the lake's high water and has turned into a sort of lagoon surrounded by the leavings of a million sea gulls. It's kind of smelly over there.
Elizabeth Stride was Jack the Ripper’s 3rd victim. Her body was found just inside the entrance to Dutfield’s Yard on Berner Street (now called Henriques Street) on 30th September.
In the top photo, where the wheel is mounted high up on the wall- that’s the entrance to Dutfield’s yard. Louis Diemschutz entered the yard on his horse and cart around 1am when his pony seemed aggrieved about something and shied away to the left. Louis saw something on the ground and on further inspection, saw it was a body. He ran into the Gentleman’s Social Club in the yard to get help.
This was the night of the “Double Event”, where our mysterious killer went on to murder another prostitute, Catherine Eddowes in Mitre Square. It is often thought Jack was hiding in the shadows just out of Louis’s sight, as Elizabeth’s body hadn’t been fully mutilated yet and it’s possible Jack was interrupted.
Dutfield’s Yard no longer exists and the murder location is now a school. Elizabeth’s body was found just inside the school gate in the bottom picture.
