Hi-viz Howard is usually the most...er...sedate walker in the team but surprised us with his performance in the dark. He seemed to have developed a pathological urge to overtake everyone in front of us, chasing down the bobbing glowsticks with relentless determination and using his elbows with reckless abandon. At this stage we felt sure we must be first home as we slowly reeled in and passed the crowd ahead.
We knew it couldn't last, of course; none of us would have been able to keep that pace up for the entire walk. But it made sense to get as many miles under our belts as quickly as possible; to make hay while the sun...er...didn't shine, as it were.
