A water strider stopped by today. Landed on wheelbarrow with water. Nice warm and sunny day, in the 70s (deg F). Raleigh, NC USA
A good end to a freezing cold, extremely windy and tiring day on Helvellyn. Icy, treacherous blasts of wind blew me over several times, gloves were whipped a hundred feet as I fumbled to change lenses, I was upperly cold and exhausted. However, the sun cleared as I reached my favorite vantage point on Dollywaggon Pike, and I was rewarded with some nice shots of Saint Sunday Crag and Grizedale beyond.

He got along well with Tino, which was really nice. We were expecting problems, as Strider isn't neutered, but they were both always loose.

The amazing water strider doesn't just walk on water. It skips across it with the grace of an Olympic skater and the power of a hockey player. The insect dances up and down to avoid being submerged by raindrops, and it can pack 15 times its body weight without sinking. www.livescience.com/62-walking-water-insect-secret-reveal...
Research finds the water strider's legs are covered with microscopic hairs that trap tiny air bubbles, allowing the insect to simply float.
