A crisp and full-of-character portrait of a Red-legged Seriema or Crested Cariama (Cariama cristata) pacing briskly across a lush green lawn during a golden evening session at De Valk Roofvogels in Lunteren, Netherlands. Captured at 158mm with f/5 and a fast 1/2000s shutter speed, the shot beautifully details its unique frontal feather crest, bright red beak, long legs, and alert gaze in warm evening light.

As with all insects, the water strider has three pairs of legs. The front legs are much shorter, and allow the strider to quickly grab prey on the surface. The middle legs act as paddles. The back legs are the longest and provide additional power, and also enable the strider to steer and “brake.”

The buoyancy and paddling legs allows striders to be fast. Very, very fast. The National Geographic article reports striders are capable of “speeds of a hundred body lengths per second. To match them, a 6-foot-tall person would have to swim at over 400 miles an hour.” from Cool Green Science.

A couple of weeks ago I took a group of work colleagues on a rather blustery, wet and dark hike up Helvellyn. The clouds first cleared as we crossed Nethermost Pike where this view was taken. The prominent prow in the shadow is the end of Striding Edge which itself can be seen disappearing to the left of the image. The sunlit valley floor being the beautiful valley of Grisedale.

These insects are spectacular to observe. They are gliding on water surface, preferring calm waters, of course. But how do they do it?

This photo shows nicely that the surface of water is curved on all 6 points where the animal is touching it. The 6 dark dots are shadows of those curvings. They distribute their weight carefully on all 6 points, but this picture shows that the rear legs are touching water surface on larger area, not only at their tips. That creates enough surface tension to float. Rear legs are used more or less for floating and navigating, while very fast movements ahead are provided by front legs.

And there is more. When you read more about these animals, you learn that their legs are covered by thousands of tiny hair per milimeter. That results in small air bubbles, helping them additionally to float. Even if due to turmoil they get under water, due to that air they immediately float on surface.

So, here you see that nature has found a way of walking on water, different that the one that Jesus found ;)

Like this White Ibis, we have to keep on moving forward, away from adversity (or a photographer)

This shot was taken on Tenby beach, Pembrokeshire, Wales. I've been experimenting with using Luminar for editing my images with mixed results although I'd put that down to my unfamiliarity with the software rather than any faults it may have. For the last few years most of my PC editing has been done using Capture One 12 for Sony and whilst it is in my opinion a bit of a daunting piece of software like so many things in life, you get used to its quirks and flaws. Capture One is going onto a subscription type payment system so I read somewhere and rather than go down that road I thought I'd try the inexpensive Luminar.

Have any of you used Luminar and if so, what's your thoughts?

These two colorfully clad cross-country skiers were at times almost perfectly in synch as they traveled across a frozen, snow-covered lake on a recent afternoon at Michigan's Kensington Metropark.
