Distant city: pandemic times

This is from a time when I took good photos (I think) but it was also one of the worst times, at the height of the pandemic, hundreds or thousands of people were dying every day, and I went out to take photos with two masks, alcohol, without touching anything, I walked for hours through the streets without drinking water, because I needed to record somehow what was happening.

Esta é de uma époda que fiz boas fotos (eu acho) mas também foi uma das piores épocas, no auge da pandemia, morriam centenas ou milhares de pessoas por dia, e eu saia para fotografar com duas máscaras, álcool, sem tocar em nada, andava horas pelas ruas sem sequer beber água, pois precisava registrar de alguma forma o que estava acontecendo.

Striding Edge awaits. Found this photo while tidying up my old catalogs. After recently getting back from a trip up Glen Coe back in 2008 I still had a urge to get back into the mountains. So I decided to go across to the Lakes to feed the habit. Here is a shot as I approached a wintery looking Striding Edge.

These insects are spectacular to observe. They are gliding on water surface, preferring calm waters, of course. But how do they do it?

This photo shows nicely that the surface of water is curved on all 6 points where the animal is touching it. The 6 dark dots are shadows of those curvings. They distribute their weight carefully on all 6 points, but this picture shows that the rear legs are touching water surface on larger area, not only at their tips. That creates enough surface tension to float. Rear legs are used more or less for floating and navigating, while very fast movements ahead are provided by front legs.

And there is more. When you read more about these animals, you learn that their legs are covered by thousands of tiny hair per milimeter. That results in small air bubbles, helping them additionally to float. Even if due to turmoil they get under water, due to that air they immediately float on surface.

So, here you see that nature has found a way of walking on water, different that the one that Jesus found ;)
