The lady in question simply stands out. Those glasses,.. Can I take a photo? A slightly hesitant yes, but only with her boyfriend. Sure, no problem. Would I have preferred to photograph her alone? Yes, her charisma and those glasses would have stood out much better, but you have to respect people's wishes. Does her boyfriend want to be in the picture? Yes, definitely. Is it sharp? No, it could have been, but with a FoV of just a few centimeters, that's a bit more difficult. And that's fine too...

Walking up Tottenham Court Road I spotted Loras who has the most beautiful piercing blue eyes. I would have kicked myself if I didn't have a go so I headed straight on in. Loras lives in Paris and can you believe she apologised to me for her 'bad' English! Baring in mind my version of French is to say Bonjour and then nod like someone depriving a village somewhere of its idiot. She spoke excellent English.
Anyway, she asked me about why I wanted a picture so I told her about the 100 Strangers concept and told her that her eyes had called me over. She laughed and said that she's not very good in photographs but that I was welcome to try.
Well Loras (I hope I've spelt your name correctly!), I think you look absolutely wonderful in this picture and I thank you for agreeing to be a part of my project. Merci beaucoup, tu es très belle!!

I met Christian and his girlfriend on St. Jean Street in Quebec City. They were having a leisurely walk and didn't seem to be in a rush. I asked Christian if he wanted to participate in my strangers project and he readily agreed.
Christian is 45 years old and lives outside the Quebec City area. He was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec and attended Université de Montrèal where he obtained a degree in Music. Christian plays guitar and is a professional musician. His work includes accompanying groups and bands for performances or in the studio.
In his spare time Christian loves to play tennis. His favourite neighbourhood in Quebec City is Place d'Youville. A shot of the couple is included in the comment section.

Evgeny was my third stranger this eveneng. I saw him walking with a friend and as they stopped for a while, I didn't hesitate to ask him. He really stood out from the croud not only because he was tall and well dressed, but for some unexplicable reason I can't really describe. He asked me why I wanted to photograph him specifically and I couldn't elaborate as it's quite a "feel it" thing. As far as "feeling" goes, I decided BW was more suitable for this person for some unknown reason.
Evgeny is a musician (classical) and quite an extraordinary guy. As I already mentioned, art persons are quite hard to get through and he was no exception. He asked me if the project was some kind of competition. I explained the concept and that it was a voluntary thing both for me and the people I shoot. First I tried a shot against some black background but it was way too dark and I didn't like the result with the built in flash, so I took him in the open. At some point he turned sideways and I took some interesting profile pictures.

This is Eduardo, my stranger # 3. I met him while taking pictures of stranger #2, He was passing by while we were taking pics in front of the supermarket and requested a picture together with Nadia (which turned out to be very charming underneath my orange umbrella). I liked his gentle smile and how the rain drops collected on his blue rain poncho and asked him for a portrait shot as well. Thanks, Eduardo!

Josephine is from Sheffield and now at Manchester University. I met her at lunch time walking through the middle of Manchester. Both Josephine and her friend Tida kindly agreed to take part in this project although the sun came out from behind a cloud resulting in me not being too happy with Tida's portraits and therefore I have not posted them.

A very charming lady who was working at a very popular coffee shop chain, which must go unnamed.
She had a wonderful accent, and tolerated me ordering several free cups of water, not paying a cent.
This is my lovely stranger #147. I was sat on a park bench in Cardiff with Dominique and a Spanish lady called Maria. She was gracious enough to give me some change so I could get a raffle ticket from Maria. In return I asked if I could take her portrait and send it to her. It was no surprise to me that Dominique was a model and probably on her way to a photo-shoot. I told her about the 100 strangers project and she was happy to be part of it.

The order was slightly different here. I was standing looking down a road trying to work out how to frame a shot of it when Cerise waved her hand in front of me to get my attention. She got it. She was working with a team of people dressed in futuristic looking outfits and marketing the latest LG 3D mobile smart phones.
Now I'm not the type of person to get excited about mobile phones which I see as a tool at best and a distraction at worst. But these things are incredible. They have a proper 3D screen that doesn't require glasses to view. They have two camera's on the back. She took a picture of me holding my arm out and the 3D effect was amazing. It really made me think about the future of DSLRs. the only thing I didn't like about the phone is the price, but I'm sure that in 3 to 5 years time we'll all have these things.
So anyway, pitch over and I turned the tables and asked Cerise if I could take a picture of her. Straight away she went from confident technology demo lady to shy and bashful which was really cute. I took two pictures of her and we looked at them and agreed that they were really not good. So I asked if I could try again and while Cerise explained to me that she doesn't look good in pictures, took this, where I think she looks a million dollars. Cerise, I hope you agree. Thanks for showing me some tech that actually got me enthused and for two opportunities to take your picture.

I went and participated in the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk last October 1st here in Sacramento and Dean was one of the last subjects that I photographed that day. I saw Dean outside the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, sitting by the door entrance on the right, as if taking shelter from the heat of the sun, and just kicking back. It was immediately obvious to me that he is one of the many homeless people that roam around the downtown of Sacramento. While most people would ignore or even avoid people like him, i have been drawn to them more and more (see my 26th stranger, Miss Jackson)
The first thing i noticed about Dean was how clean looking he was from the usual bums I see around downtown, and he wasn't "hygienically challenged" like a lot of them are. The other thing that struck me right away as I moved closer to take his photo were his eyes. They were bright and blue, and very calming. We talked for a bit and I actually sat down next to him asking where he was from and what he's up to. He told me about how he's from Sacramento, born and raised and that he was going to the Sacramento Loaves & Fishes first thing the following day. I wished I could have talked to him some more but most of the people that I was with at the walk have started to move. I thanked him for his time, and he, with a bit of hesitation and shyness, asked if I have a dollar to spare, and I was more than glad to give him one.
Dean is my 31st stranger for the 100 Strangers Project.

On a side note, I love my Lumix G3! I already talked about it on my previous uploads, and a few have messaged me asking if the the photos that came from the camera are usually grainy/noisy even at low ISO. The answer is a big no, infact it performs really well in low light up to ISO1600 before you can start noticing the obvious noise. The BW photos I uploaded previously were post-process with Grain effect from Lightroom3. I am also pleasantly satisfied with the IQ i get from this camera along with the Lumix 20mm F/1.7 lens. As you can see from this photo of my stranger, this camera lens combo is a clear winner! =)
I saw my first stranger when walking around in de city centre but I was too shy to approach at first.
When I sat down on a bench a while later, I took a look at the bench next to me and saw her again. So without further hesitation I got up and asked her. She was very polite and wished me good luck with the rest of the project. Thank you for being my first of the project!!

My first Strangers portrait with speedlight. I used a small silver reflector to get some of the edge out of naked speedlights. I also did scout for the place prior to taking the picture, like the night before. I wanted something more interesting than the plain full frontal, so I asked Ulrich to stand on the stairs. They were lit by some gas lamps, I just needed to make sure that the flash was slightly brighter than the surroundings.
I didn't feel like I had much time for experimentation with light distance, so I'm glad I calculated the flash - ambient light ration before.
There's another good picture with a much friendlier look, but I specifically set out to try for a bit more depth this time. I guess it works somewhat. Thanks, Ulrich. See you at your party!
I was walking around the neighborhood today, looking for things to shoot. With our recent rain storm that passed through, there were quite a few photo ops with drops. As I was making my way home, I spotted Paul walking his two German Shorthair Pointers on the opposite side of the street. We casually greeted each other and I decided right then that I wanted him to be part of my stranger portfolio.
He readily agreed and I asked if he wanted a shot with his dogs. That made it easier for me to get a good shot, because Paul is quite a bit taller than me. I found out that Paul lives just down the street from me. He was taking his dogs Baylee (on the left), and Sage to the park because they'd been cooped up all day. They needed some exercise and with the rain pretty much gone, it was a perfect day for it.
Paul works as a bathroom and kitchen remodeler. He's been working with his dad for several years who has been in business for about 30 years or so. They do most of their work in the local area.
After getting several shots, Paul stated, "I thought you were going to take one?" Yeah, well I needed to take several to make sure I got a good one. Actually, this shot was the last one I took of the three of them so I'm glad I took more than one. He even joked, asking me whether this was going to cost him $10.00 like down at the fair or other places that take photos. I assured him there were no strings attached and that I'd send him a copy of the shot to him.

Hertford Street, Mayfair, London.
Stranger # 4 is 6ft 7in and works as security for a big London hotel facing onto Park Lane, he was concerned I was going to use his photo for some sort of porn shoot ! With his size and powerful frame he made quite an intimidating figure but was actually really charming. We had a good chat and shared a few laughs, glad I stopped.

I saw Karianne, sitting and smoking outside an educational facility in down-town Oslo. I pretended to take a picture, and she asked me if and why I photographed her. I explained that I hadn't, but that I wanted to, and I talked to her about the project.
She asked me about if I did it for a living, and we struck up a conversation. I spotted her chef's overcoat under her jacket, and deduced her profession: she seemed impressed.
It then started raining, and I unmounted my bike, and huddled up against the wall to avoid getting my gear wet. We discussed nicotine addiction - I used to be an habitual smoker myself up until five years ago, but I have now kicked the habit, and we talked about motiviation for qitting. If you look carefully at the study of her hands (see comment photo) you can see a few rain drops on her trousers.
At this point she was happy to let me photograph her, but she didn't want to see the photo and declined me writing down the flickr-url for her. I explained how usually, if you see your photo in a mirror, it looks more familiar, since we are more used to seeing our image like that, and she said she'd think about it. She ran in from her brake, and a few minutes later the rain ceased, and I was on my way.

Meet Hine. Hine is a 1st year biology major at UDC, she hails for San Jose Ca. When asked why a biology major, Hine simple explains that biology interests her and she's good at, so why not biology?
I was walking up 2nd st in Davis when Hine and I crossed paths. I looked at her I noticed that she was looking at my camera strapped around my hand. That was all I needed to stop, introduce myself and eventually ask her to take part in my 100 Stranger Project. She agreed and I snapped several frames of Hine. Her portraits were a joy to create, her since of humor and personality was easily captured on camera.

This is my stranger N1! I finally did it! Please be gentle with me ☺
I have been sitting with the idea to start this project for a while but never really got my acts together to started it, well until this evening.
I was sitting in a coffee shop, feeling a bit bored, lonely and no happy with my photography skills, I can be quite rigid with myself so I was thinking to a way to improve my skills. Therefore what a better way to improve my camera with the 100 strangers project? Here I am, starting it, let see where it will take me.
This guy is a bartender in a Soho House, a well know club in town, he's name is Thomas. He was having his smoking break so I took my courage, approached him, explained what I was trying to achieve and if he would allow me to take a photo of him. To my surprise he said yes, took my camera out and shoots! He didn’t have a long break, he had only the time to finish his cigarette. Blamey man, I didn’t have much time!
I hope you are going to like this photo, I don’t use flash, I go manual and I really like take photos at night, I guess is because I'm more a night person than an early bird. In fact, its 1am and I'm still here writing this intro!

Aurora is one of those few evidence of a Rome that doesn't exist anymore. This is particularly true in a suburb like Trastevere, a piece of history for this city. She's not a homeless but she belongs to that new category we often listen to the television known as "the new urban poor". Aurora is a retired person and she has to pay nine hundred euros per month to live in thirty square meters. Of course she was born in Trastevere and she always lived there.
When I asked her if she could dedicate me a couple of minutes, she was sitting on a chair, smoking a cigarette in a winter sun. She answered ironically: "I'm here, I don't run away!" and then she started to speak me like a grandmother. Of course I was interested in the old stories of her life, and she said: "my love, what do you want me to say, it was much better thirty years ago when there was the riffraff". I asked: "what do you mean, Aurora?", "Yes, because at that time, there were thieves, junkies but we all knew each other. Nowadays here in Trastevere there are only foreigners, they're not bad people but they don't speak, they live on their own".
While we were having this conversation I suddenly recognized Aurora in a documentary I saw about Trastevere called "Barricata San Calisto" (Barricade San Calisto) (you can see it here but is entyrely in Italian, or even worse, in Roman dialect) where San Calisto is an historical Bar in Trastevere. Just one more proof this woman is a piece of history for this suburb.

It's been quite a while since I stopped someone to ask for a photo.
Why I decided to stop him? It's simple because he looked nice and cute and I hoped he will let me take his photo, plus he was sitting all alone.
Of course he was really nice for letting me take his photo and also telling me a few things about himself.
His name is Szila, 21 years old, studying German and English and he has an awesome old bike.
I wish I would have asked him other questions too but I guess I simply can't do that. Probably when I will reach my 80th stranger I will be able to have a nice conversation.

This is Sara from Stuttgart, Germany. She was visiting her friend Nina in Breda, who was here on an student exchange programme. They had a coffee in coffee bar in Breda where I happened to be. As Sara had a camera as well, it was easy to start a conversation. And her response was very open.

Everyday on my way to work I pass Asfahan, who's handing out news papers to bicycling commuters.
I don't really read that particular paper and I never stopped to chat either, but with his smile and great spirit, this guy always sets me in a good mood for the day. I'm sure my fellow commuters feel the same way. This morning I stopped on my way to work and briefly explained him about the project and asked him about his name. He went on about his business as I took a few shots, thanked him and got back on track for another busy day.
As someone who has long been a part of my life, yet a complete stranger, it felt just right to start off my 100 Strangers challenge with Asfahan.

I saw Caitlin walking along in a park and decided to ask her for a picture. "OK" says she. So I start to work with my camera but was completely distracted by a bunch of builders up some scaffolding to the side of the park who, on noticing us, erupted in a fit of cheers and merriment. Bless them. It was quite off putting though and Caitlin seemed quite embarrassed too.
So I didn't spend long and didn't get much of a chance to chat. Caitlin did tell me that until recently she lived in Beijing but moved here to go to Uni. I'd have loved to have had a chance to find out more about Beijing, what a fascinating place!
So in the end, under trying circumstances, I'm happy with the picture that we made. Thanks Caitlin, I hope you like it.

this is petria she works at nick scali furniture and she recently completed a dimploma in interior design and she applied to go onto a new reality tv series but didnt get it however shell try again next year.
Lite by natural light against a window
I met Paul on the Coastal Trail and he was taking a short respite from a vigorous bike ride. Paul has been enjoying the Alaskan summer by bike riding almost every night and works a swing shift, so he can ride late at night since the sun never sets. Paul also is a photographer and said he liked to take photos of deer in his backyard in New Hampshire, where the deer would eat apples from his trees early in the morning, then scamper off before human activity started. Thanks again Paul!

Stranger 1 of 100.
I was visiting DC when I noticed this young lady at the National WW2 Memorial. I liked her laid-back style so I asked if she'd like to be a part of the project. She said yes and I was so nervous about photographing my first stranger, I forgot to ask her name! However, I did find out that she was a high school senior from California visiting DC for college. So, when I saw her state (Cali) carved out right next to us, I thought it'd be great to include in the backdrop.

I met her during our holidays in Abu Dhabi.
As it became a habit to enjoy a tea after dinner in our hotel we met quite often in our hotel... *;)
Xin is from China and works in the hotel to gain experience abroad.

photos taken for a project, I had to approach 15 total strangers and ask to take their photo. I did a few extra because it started to get much easier.
This is Alexei, stranger #9 for my 100 strangers project.. He made it easy to get back into this project after a hiatus of being too chicken to ask people! With his "Free Hugs" sign, I had to. He's a great, outgoing guy, and the world could use more free hugs. We couldn't chat for too long - I had a bus to catch, and he had more strangers to hug. I was a bit nervous about it and only grabbed a few shots with my point and shoot, so I'm not entirely happy with the results, but here he is. I'm hoping that by the end of the project I'm more comfortable and spend more time to make quality portraits.

I went to an ancient place in Dhaka named Birulia today. And I found this guy who was preparing bread in his road side restaurant. After talking for a while I found that he has been doing this job for 3+ years. His name is Helal Khan and he cooks very good.
It was a nice encounter because he has such a nice face.

After photographing stranger #5, I was wondering around listening to the music playing and hoping to run in to another stranger I wanted to photograph..... just then, Casey and some of his friends walked into view. I loved his hair and he had kind eyes. I didn't hesitate at all (or I would lose my nerve) and asked him for a picture. He was so kind and immediately agreed without question. I explained the project and asked him to step into another room where it was a little less crazy.
He is here from Kentucky visiting with his girlfriend (she is from this area of West Michigan). He is a rock climber and has spent some time in the mountains photographing. He said that he was here visiting with his girlfriend and celebrating his birthday! I'm bummed that I didn't have anything to write on as I don't remember much of his story... I had had a couple of beers. :-/ I do remember he seemed so gentile & kind. He let me take as many shots as I wanted and even posed up against a wall and said something like "see, I can be all casual like this too" LOL!! (see secondary pose below)
I have been photographing only women as that's what I feel comfortable with... time to break the comfort zone with stranger #6!

I saw Paul at the Hamilton East Sunday Market. Paul is a stall holder and had a very relaxed captivating manner about him. He was very happy to chat to passers-by and potential customers. So I decided that he would be a great subject for the stranger project but by the time I got enough courage to ask he was enjoying a meat pie. But as it turned out he was more than willing to be photographed He happily shook the crumbs out of his beard and gave me a lovely smile. Thank you Paul for helping me with my project.
At my school, we had a polling place. I went in hoping to take photos there and was told no photos within 150 feet, so that was a no go. While on my prep period, which is at the end of the day, I walked into the teacher's lounge and noticed three women, poll workers eating their lunch. I was in and out of the lounge several times, so I decided to wait until they were done eating before approaching them.
I asked Dorothy if she would allow me to take her portrait today. I told her about the 100 Strangers project and also another challenge I was given this week to create a photo that critiques my culture. I really couldn't think of anything else that shows what it means to be an American more than the right to vote in a Democracy.
Dorothy works for Children's Services in Los Angeles County as her full time job. Los Angeles County encourages people to work at the polls, so Dorothy was able to get the day off to work at the polls today. I asked her why she did this and she told me because it was something different and it allowed her to meet other people.
Dorothy has been working as a poll worker for at least 12 years. She had a red, white and blue ribbon around her neck on which were attached all of the pins she has received as a poll worker. She showed me her pins and I was able to see her 2000, 2004 and 2012 pins.
It was going to be a long day for Dorothy as she was required to be at the polling place at 6 AM. Polls closed at 8 PM and it would take about an hour to pack up everything and get the ballots to where they needed to go.
My photo, unfortunately was quickly taken as I didn't want to take up too much of her time. School was also going to get out shortly, so I wasn't sure how that might play out with all of the students around, so I was able to place Dorothy against the brick wall outside the teacher's lounge and got a couple of good shots.

Esther's doctor advised her to walk for a half hour a day, and, to avoid the stress on her body, she does it in the public pool in Taylor, Texas. The problem is Esther can't swim and she's actually afraid of water. But she soldiers on. She's not sure what she'll do when the pool close at the end of the summer season in a month.

I found Morris sitting in a bus stop drinking wine and cheap cans of bourban and cola with a mate. I lingered as I walked past and struck up a conversation with him.
He was interested in my camera and asked if I could snap a picture of him and his mate and print it for them. He thought that a camera like this must have been one of those fancy polaroid ones.
He was living just up the road in a salvation army hostel. Turns out he was from my home town a couple of hours away but he had to get away because he would always get into trouble up there drinking with the boys and from the cuts, grazes and stitches on his head I could see what he ment.
We shook hands then I was on my way. Good luck Morris.
Last Saturday on my way to the station I saw this guy smoking a cigarette in front of a store. He seemed very relaxed, so I approached him and asked for a minute of his time. He was very interested in the strangers project and he agreed to let me take him photograph.
His name is Jimmy, he is a student and works on weekends as a shop assistant in a street wear shop.

*Unfortunately I forgot to take this guys' details. Sad face. I'm going to try and get hold of him through the railway to thank him for his time and let him see how the picture came out.* <--See update.
I met him at the Welshpool and Llanfair Light railway after I had been taking some photos of the locomotives and the station. It was my first time taking a photo of anyone I didn't know so to be honest I bumbled the whole talking and getting to know the person phase of the challenge and panicked slightly. I know where I went wrong and how to go about it next time to get the best results though now.
Technically I had the camera set to aperture priority with the flash bounced to the left off of the locomotive at half power with my 35mm lens at f4.5.
UPDATE (6/9/11):
Received a message on Flickr today from John, who turns out to be the guy in this photo. Was pointed towards it by a friend of his that stumbled across my photos of the railway on the interwebs. He told me that he had been volunteering at the railway since the age of 11 and had qualified as an engine driver at the age of 23, the youngest to do so in recent years at the railway. At the age of 28 he remains the youngest driver there and shows a great passion for the place, which is understandable after having seen it for myself and knowing what the countryside is like in this part of the world.
It was amazing to hear from him, and gave me goosebumps to start with when I realised who the message was from. I will be sending him a print of the photo to thank him for his time and to apologise for my handling of the photo taking-ness. I was also asked by him if it might be possible for the railway to use the image on the volunteering section of the website if they agree to it.
I have every intention of returning to the railway, as this time I was incredibly rushed due to still having a 300 mile journey to finish by the end of the day.

On my way back to the office I walked past the nearby dance school and spotted Pavla chatting to a friend. I doubled back to ask and she kindly agreed. There is very bright sun where she was sitting so I asked her to move over to a shady spot a few feet off. I was curious to know how the picture would turn out and it turns out reasonably well but I really wasn't that sure at the time. Thank heavens for my fast prime lens as my kit lens would not have been able to get this shot so nicely though in hindsight I should have opened up the aperture even more to blur out the background.
What caught my eye first was the bright red scarf on the black jacket which seemed to work well with her lovely soft complexion so hopefully I was able to bring that out with this picture.

We met Aaron and his two children Aden and Caelum in Waco, Texas, at the famed Health Camp burger joint. We were on our way to Dallas to visit my wife's sister and her boys. Aaron's brood (his wife and two other kids--including a 6-week-old--were sitting across from them) were returning to their home in San Antonio from a funeral in North Texas. He and his wife are coffee roasters. Aaron said he previously worked for Starbuck's and went forward on his own with his passion for coffee with his company: www.browncoffeeco.com/.
I like that all three were wearing glasses, as does my four-year-old son. This is my first group photo for the 100 Strangers project. I had some trouble with the light from the window behind them, but a flash pretty much solved it.
Oh, and the Health Camp name isn't meant to be ironic. It comes from the name of the dairy that originally provided products for the restaurant, which is frequented both by Baylor University students and highway travelers taking a break from driving Interstate 35.
