"People watching, huh?"
The man across where i was standing shouted.
"Yup, and taking pictures of them too" I responded as i walked towards him.
"You wana see something interesting? You should take a picture of it too" he said laughing.
"What's that?" I asked.
"Well, an 'ogre' ate my foot and almost tore the whole foot off !" he said, as he proceeds to remove his shoe and sock.
Atleast this is what i remember him saying, lol
This is interesting, i thought. A monster tale!! :D
Turns out, he was talking about an AUGER, a part of an asphalt paver equipment that he operates.
Mark works for a company that does road construction and repair and had an accident last december while working.
His foot got caught in a Bomag Asphalt Paver and had to be taken to a hospital and had to undergo reconstructive surgery and physical theraphy.
Minutes later his wife Janis joined us and showed me pictures from her camera phone of his foot with the wounds still fresh.
Today, Mark (and his foot) for the most part, has almost completely recovered, and is enjoying a cold breezy saturday afternoon with his wife, outside Barnes & Noble.
I spent the next couple of minutes with this nice couple talking about his accident and recovery and i told them about the project i'm doing.
I gave them my card and they said goodbye, while i remained sitting there outside, feeling quite happy and proud of myself that i was able to not only shoot 2 strangers today,
but actually manage to connect with 3 people whom i do not know, and felt happy that they shared a good 15-20 minutes of their life with me.
It felt very fulfilling, this 100 Strangers Project.
Now it feels like i can really do this, and make it to 100.
Then, i heard this truck honking, i looked up and it was Mark and Janis waiving, and i waived back thinking "what a really nice good couple!"

My Stranger #43 is Polly. I met Polly running a roadside stand
just out of Tarkington, Texas in deep East Texas. She had a
lovely assortment of homemade jellies and jams along with
some local honey for sale. I purchased the Mayhaw jelly she
has in her hand and it is a lovely flavor lighter tasting than a
plum or a grape. She and her son work together making,
buying, and selling the items for their roadside stands. She
runs one and he runs another in a different location. Polly
was busy helping other customers too so we did not get
to visit as long but she did agree to be one of my 100
Strangers on Flickr and for that I am very thankful!!!
She was very interesting and a very hardworking lady!!!
It was definitely a joy to meet and talk to as we shopped!!!

Last week, I had a frightening encounter with a stranger at the downtown Sarasota bus station, but yesterday I decided that I was not going to let that experience keep me from trying to meet more strangers there.
As I walked toward the station, I spotted Jasmine who was tucked away in an alcove facing the street. I suspect that she had placed herself there strategically so that she would not be harassed. I walked up and asked if she would be interested in participating in our project. She was willing and didn't mind chatting or having her photo taken.
Jasmine is getting her GED at the local Sarasota County Technical Institute, and when I asked how long that would take, her response was "a long time." I did not ask what circumstances had caused her to drop out of school earlier, but I was somewhat surprised because she seemed so smart and mature.
Once she has her GED, Jasmine is interested in going back to school so that she can have a career working either with children or with animals. With her sweet and gentle nature, I am sure that she will do wonderfully in either career.
I was a bit disappointed with this image because I was working on portraits for the first time with my Canon 50mm 1.4 lens, set at f/1.4, and this image like so many others I took the same day, is softer than I had expected. Perhaps I would have done better to have set the aperture to f/2.8 or higher? Any recommendations from all of you seasoned photographers out there would be great! Thanks.

Whataburger is the hamburger chain of Texas. It was founded in 1950 in Corpus Christi, Texas, by Harmon Dobson, who is featured in the statue on the left. Dobson died in a 1967 airplane crash, but Whataburger continues on with about 700 restaurants.
During our trip to Corpus Christi, we stopped at Whataburger's flagship store. Scott was outside by the Dobson statue smoking a cigarette, so I asked him to pose with the founder (whose pocket is full of cigars!). I'm not quite sure of Scott's story. He was dressed too nicely to be assumed homeless. When I asked he said he'd been working on generators and later tried to sell me some jade. He asked me to buy him a hamburger, and I said no. But sitting down with my family to eat, I changed my mind. I pointed Scott to a table and handed him a number that was his ticket to a Whataburger.

this is my first attempt on completing project 100Strangers, aand this is my first stranger :)
Her name is Veronica Diaz, she is the Medical Professor in Poitiers, France. She came to my little town to share her knowledge about how to study in France, especially Universite de Poitiers.
she also gave a lecture which i attended today, at the moment, i feel this is the right moment to start the 100Strangers project. i and her were talking about how can i do some research in France and the possibilities of studying doctoral programme there :)
after the lecture i decided to approach her, i told her that i am just an amateur photographer. i told her that i was planning to make new project called 100strangers, and i told her
"it will be my honor to have you as my first stranger in this project"
and she smiled
"okey, you may take my picture"
clik, clik clik and voila! i get the first stranger!! :)

Flavia works in a very nice shop in Trastevere. Nice girl, stunning eyes, she felt confortable with the story of the project from the beginning (I had a little advantage over her 'cause I had just taken a shot of a friend of her) and also interested about it, so that I showed her some other strangers pictures I had on my phone. Then we took the picture inside the shop, not a great light but I didn't want to overwhelm her ... she was still working while I was having a day off with my bike and my camera!

My third stranger portrait is of Doug. I was at the local grocery store doing some shopping for the family when Doug approached and offered to help unload my packages, which is part of his job. He saw my camera and asked about it, which gave me the opportunity to explain the Stranger project. I then asked if I could photograph him. It was bitterly cold and so I appreciated his help and getting to include him in this project. This picture is #3 in my 100 strangers project. It's been a while since I posted any stranger portraits of late and I admit I'm out of practice. I took a whirlwind one day trip to NYC this weekend and focused on capturing street portraits and snap shots of the folks that make NYC come alive. I was not able to shoot a lot, but captured a few good images. This sweet nice lady agreed to pose for me and her dog was so cute. I love NYC because it's rare that someone will say no when I approach them for a street portrait. We made some small talk and unfortunately being out of practice I didn't get her name, but she was gracious and wished me good luck with my photography.

Stranger #3 of 100.
I was hanging out by the lake when I came across Eddie struggling with this small sailboat. Really freindly, really likable young man, he said he hadn't sailed in about 15 years and someone recently gave him this boat and he was trying it out. I asked if I could take a few pictures and he said "sure".
Eddie if you see this I wish you good great luck with the boat, and thaks a million for the pictures.

On Wednesday evening after work I took a walk with my Camera. The sun was low an the sky and was a wonderful colour. I spotted Ellie sitting in a part and thought that the lighting would be a challenge to deal with but rewarding if I got it right.
As you can see, I asked her to stand with the sun coming over her right shoulder. I turned her enough to get some even shadow light on her face but will having the golden sun light up her hair. The result is that her hair is a little blown out. Perhaps I could have used a little fill flash from the onboard. Ideally I'd have liked to have had my small reflector though I've still not mastered the use of that. But I didn't have it with me.
Still, I'm happy with the effect, the blown out hair doesn't bother me and Ellie's big doe eyes are so lovely.

I have to say, being 9 in on my round 2, that I feel like my learning is accelerating compared to my first round where my focus was more on trying to master actually approaching a stranger rather than focusing on the actual photography. I think it's leading to pictures that aren't at the same standard technically as some of the ones towards the end of my last round. I see this as a positive though because it means I'm still pushing forward. I did make a few portraits in the style that I have been more comfortable with that evening though, I couldn't resist!
Sonja was hitchhiking in snow and I gave her a quick ride to mid-town. Sonja works in landscaping and has been in Alaska since 1964. She's going through a rough patch right now but has a warm place to stay at the Rescue Mission. I get the impression from Sonja that she has been through quite a bit in life, but presses on, which I respect greatly. I don't see her on the streets begging for money, only asking for a lift, and getting help at the Resue Mission instead of sleeping on the streets. Here's to Sonja, and finding her purpose in life.

Carlo is a great barman in a very central bar between Campo de Fiori and Piazza Farnese. I met him some days ago, talked him about the project, which he liked, but I didn't take the picture because it was lunch time and he was very busy. Today I met him again during a working break while he was smoking a cigarette. He's been working there for 30 years! 30 years waking up at 5.00 in the morning! And he proudly added: "... but before I worked a lot of years in the summer villages all around the world, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Algeria and a lot of other countries!". "Carlo, will they (the politicians) allow you to get retired? Every time they ask people to work some years more ...", "I don't know, I applied for it, we'll see, but then I'd need to find something else to do!".

I was in Camden in the early afternoon hoping to do a bit of street photography and maybe get a few stranger portraits as well. I was feeling decidedly uninspired and apprehensive, so thought maybe a burger would help. I met Lance (Stranger # 64) and Lucie after I had just finished eating lunch and they walked out of the restaurant behind me. Lance and Lucie had gotten engaged in London and now, every year on their anniversary, they come back from Nottingham to celebrate.

1rst word that comes to your mind: Café
I met Chen at the Second Cup coffee shop near downtown Montreal. It was freezing cold outside at that time (around -30 Celcius) and when i entered, i spotted a table higher than the normal tables with an elevated place for the feet. I recognize right away the opportunity to get away from the cold air on the ground and took the table. A guy sat on a lower table in front of me and after 5 min, had the same idea i had and got up next to my table. I saw his humongous laptop and asked him if it was a gaming laptop and he smiled and said "of course". Then we started talking about his new acquisition and how he liked it and how powerful it was for such a low price (he paid only 1400$ for a core i7, 2 HDD with one 160 GB solid state hard drive he said, which is indeed excellent, i answered back ;-). After a couple minutes, i went back into my book and started reading. As he was looking at a girl's picture on his laptop, he started putting his headphones and had Skype opened. I seize the perfect timing to ask him if he wanted to get on my project before he buried further in his Skype call. He agreed.
Tell me the 1rst FUN anecdote or story that comes to your mind and that happened to you lately: He told me he met a girl on Twitter and she was super nice and after talking for a while, he said they had many common interest so they became friends. I asked him if she was living in Montreal, but unfortunatly, he said she was from L.A. I thought it was a great reason to go visit her! I thanked him and let him do his call.
I caught stranger #3 near Conestoga mall, leaving from an apparent shopping errand on foot. I found Anisha to be extremely approachable - a little reminiscent of my lab mates from Kin - and was not surprised to find out she's a Master's candidate in Psychology at UW. I initially noticed her style, and was further impressed by her calmness when approached by me with this very unusual request. It was a very significant contrast to the hesitant reactions of my previous strangers. Perhaps the difference is confidence: in herself and in my intentions. We chatted a bit about how psychology might differ from kinesiology's psychology-centric studies (inconclusive); but I did learn that Anisha is in the second year of her degree, and working with healthy populations of kids age 4-6. She says that kids are so funny, it makes up for even [the boring] tasks like coding! :).
I asked Anisha if she's a UW grad, and was told that before moving to Waterloo she had lived in Ottawa for 4 years studying Psychology at University of Ottawa. I was excited to share my enthusiasm about the city, from fond memories of my work term there. Anisha was intrigued by my account of the high-tech presence there and tall tales of rooming with a chef :). For this stranger, I deliberately left the photo till the end, to see if getting to know each other will help them feel more natural - I'm certainly happy with the results! Anisha kindly offered to stand/pose at a good spot according to my preference, so I was able to set it up in front of a reasonably neat area with nice angle of sunlight.

This is Simone. She works at the Gift Shop at the Hard Rock Cafe Phoenix. There were many women from the Women of Faith Conference waiting for a table at the cafe and it was no exception for us, so we milled around the shop while we waited nearly an hour.
Simone was nice enough to take a picture and she was going to smile, but I asked her to not and that she didn't even need to look at the camera, if she didn't want.
Simone had a number of tattoos that I asked her about. The one that is showing is one in remembrance of her Grandmother. Since she is of Hispanic origins, the skull has something to do with remembering the dead (she told me what this was, but I forgot most of that celebration thing other than the word "muerte").
On Simone's other arm, she has another skull which has a little banner next to it that says "Nevermore", which is a tribute to Edgar Allan Poe, whom is her favorite poet.
There were other tattoos, but I can't remember all that she said because she said it so fast and I felt nervous as usual.

I was out with a group on friends one night in Nottingham working with 3 models. We were working on some fashion shots in the city when I spotted this guy sitting in the Market Square chatting to a friend.
Despite having 3 gorgeous models to work my urban 'street' instincts kicked in and I ran off leaving the models behind to meet and take this guys photo.
He was mid conversation when I got there but happy enough to be photographed. It was one of those occasions where you ask someone and they kind think your a bit mad but go along with you anyway!
After the shoot and a quick chat I handed over a card with where he could see the shot and I headed back to see if I could locate the models who had by this time drifted off up the road...oops!

I am generally not a fan of nature and landscape photography, but I surely do appreciate it when I see a good one, and Ivan does them exceptionally well. So well that it makes me actually come up and talk to this artist and ask if I can take a photo of him.
Ivan had a photo exhibit about a month ago in downtown Sacramento where I met him. His photos are breathtaking! Check out his Flickr page {Ivan Sohrakoff}, and tell me this guy and his photos doesn't amaze you, and I'll tell you to have your eyes checked :p What's even more amazing was when he told me how he made the invitation to his exhibit himself using an old-skul type handpressed style printing machine. You can see what I'm talking about in this video {Lines of Landscape}.
My 30th stranger is a genius, that's all I can say :D

I met Martin (and Alvaro, Stranger #13, and Ramona, stranger #14) quite close to home on a warmish, but clody late September Saturday. I quickly identified them as foreginers to Oslo, Norway, and approached them for a conversation, explaining the S project. They were all receptive, and we chatted for a little while.
Martin had spent a few years in Norway already, albeit not in Oslo. He has got an engineering degree from NTNU, a norwegian natural sciences university, located in the city of Trondheim. He told me he was slightly concerned about the prospects of securing a position in his native Spain, and that he was looking to Paris or, perhaps, staying on in Norway for a few more years. I am not to worried about his fututre though: his winning smile should go a long way!

This girl with a great smile works in the same art shop of stranger #7. When she heard about the project, she was interested and I didn't let the opportunity go. I like her challenging pose, with the smile and the descending hair "go ahead, you photographer, take this picture if you are able". Thank you Stranger #8 (I forgot to ask your name!) for allowing me to take your portrait.
Stranger Number 4: Vincent, the man with a 1,000 one-liners. “A horse walks into a bar, the bartender says, “Why the long face?””
My fiancé and I have a weekend tradition, either on a Saturday or Sunday, whichever we have free, we go to our favorite place to get hot wings. They’re not breaded, I think they use Frank’s Buffalo Wing sauce and they are delicious. Anyway, this Saturday, we ended up there on a whim, hadn’t really planned it for that day, but we were in the neighborhood. I also hadn’t planned on “Stranger hunting” that day, but luckily I had my camera shoved in my gigantic purse.
After enjoying our wings inside, we decided to have a drink outside before we left since it was such a beautiful day. We ordered them and paid our bill, not expecting to have another or stay past just the one. As we were outside enjoying that one last drink, an older gentleman dressed in all black, a white beard (not quite like Santa’s) and a cane, came walking down the sidewalk towards us. He paused next to our table and told us a joke. We laughed, he told us another joke. After interacting with him for a minute or two, I asked him if he would do me a favor and let me take his picture. I tried to quickly explain that I was doing this project and I told him he was just so funny and friendly, that I had to ask. He actually didn’t respond to my request, but instead, possibly in reaction to my comment about being funny and friendly, he started talking about his life, one that wasn’t so fun.
Long story short, we invited Vincent to join us and we visited with him for the next 3 hours. Vincent is homeless, staying down the street in a shelter, sleeping on a thin pad at night. Our time with him was full of jokes, peppered with abrupt moments of seriousness with a shaky voice and tears in his eyes. He uses humor to cope, to escape, to make others smile. The sadness in his life is always very close to the surface. It came out often and sudden, disappearing with a joke as fast as it came. We knew Vincent wasn’t a saint, he explained he would be going to jail on Monday for a probation violation for trespassing (he said he just wanted the pictures of his kids he had left behind), we both assumed there was more to this story. Regardless, you couldn’t help to feel for him. He had a love, Vera, whom he wasn’t able to see and was apparently in wheelchair now and not in good health. He was the 16th child of 18, but had nobody he felt he could call, he said they wouldn’t take his calls. He had children that he couldn’t see, or wouldn’t see him, he mentioned his ex-wfie had told their children lies about him in the past, out of spite. We offered him a meal while we visited, he declined our offer, he says depression doesn’t leave him with much of an appetite.
Vincent entertained us for those 3 hours with jokes, his story and a little harmonica. He seemed to be happy to have someone to talk to, someone to listen to him (he mentioned the others that stayed at the shelter weren’t so friendly). We found out later when we searched for his name online (he had offered up his full name when we met), that he did have quite the rap sheet, just as we had thought. His record paints a different picture than his words. However, we still thoroughly enjoyed visiting with him. He may have made some mistakes, probably A LOT of mistakes, but it seems he has a good heart. He says his favorite thing is making people smile and the key to a lasting love, is to always hold hands.

After sucessfully making it through to the quarter-mark stage of this project with my portrait of Trish, I was now off to find Stranger #26. Funnily enough this opportunity came only a few hundred steps further down the road, which is where I met Rebecca.
Whilst crossing the road and avoiding any large on-coming trams, Rebecca had come along and stood beside me as we waited to cross. She definetely caught my eye as her outfit was so brightly coloured I could not really miss her. The bright orange singlet top in combination with her fluro pink shorts and shoes immediately grabbed my attention and I knew I had to ask if she would like to be in the project.
So, before even reaching the other side of the crossing, I had convinced her into participating in the series and I quickly scoured the current location we were in for a suitable background. I had spotted a nice feature wall outside a restaurant which had some really intricate pattern designs – 'bokehilicous' I thought to myself :)
I asked Rebecca to stand on a slight angle towards the camera as I was looking to try and get some perspective into the background as well. Luckily for me Rebecca was very happy to move around and do whatever shots I required. Before long I had the pictures I needed (well I thought I did), and I proceeded to get some details from her.
By day, Rebecca works as a Lawyer. I forgot at the time to ask what type of Law firm she worked in, which I should of in hindsight, as you never know when you'll need a lawyer! Rebecca is originally from Perth but has been in Melbourne now for the last 12 years and was on her way into the city for coffee with some friends. She had decided to walk on this particularly lovely morning to avoid the congested traffic within the city. As well as defining the law during the week and sipping latte's with friends on weekends, Rebecca also enjoys Pole Dancing – although she currently described herself as a 'very frustrated pole dancer' due to an injured finger which has prevented her from dancing for a few weeks now.
Now normally after getting some photos and a few details from my strangers, that is it. But on this particular day it wasn't the last time I was to see Rebecca, which was very convenient as I had forgotten earlier in the day to take a full length shot of her wonderfully bright attire. So I asked once again if I could get another shot and she was more than happy to help out. She went on to say how being apart of this project had made her morning 'so much more exciting than normal' and was praising the speed at which I was able to get the photos done.

1rst word that comes to your mind: magic
I met Letitia while buying tea at the shopping mall downtown. I went to talk to her since I loved her cool purple hair and she was the one who was smiling the most. Since I was really interested in all the teas and teasan she started showing like 20 different types of green tea, oolong, roibos, herbs, etc. So we exchanged what our favorite flavors and style was ;) and since the prices were really good (4$ for 25 grams) I asked her to give me a "sample collection" of 6 teas so I could do a little "taste-test". When I told her about the 100 strangers project, she was thrilled and immediately wanted to be part of it.
Tell me the 1rst FUN anecdote or story that comes to your mind and that happened to you lately: Yesterday, while she was smoking shisha at a friend's place, another friend kept telling her that because she was so clumsy, she would surely hit the pipe and burn the couch with the charcoal. So because of that, he told her she shouldn't smoke so close to the furniture. She was like "no it's fine I'll be carefull!"… and seconds later she hit it and as the pipe was falling, the charcoal started falling toward the couch so in an effort to save the furniture, she launched toward the pipe, grabbed it and caught the charcoal with the other hand and burned herself. She showed me the burn and it was pretty bad, big and all around the skin "that folds a lot" around the thumb, so each time she moves her hand it hurts a lot. But since she seems to always see the positive side of things, she told me that since she's always grabbing and moving around cold tin can at the tea shop, it feels good to her hand ;-D
After meeting Germ (stranger #2) I headed back onto Brick Lane and spotted Wallis standing in the crowd with his camera. I approached and asked him if he was a photographer to which he humbly replied "just an amateur". I asked if he had a Flickr account, although he had heard of it, he didn't (would have been nice to see some of his photos).
I explained the project and Flickr group and he was really happy for me to take a few portraits. Wallis told me he was over from Germany visiting his daughter who lives here. I hope he enjoyed the rest of his trip over here and returns at some point!

Embarrassingly, I cannot remember this lovely lady's name and my iPad seems to have lost a bunch of notes that I took :-(
Anyway, I was a the Brompton World Championships in London and I bought a burger from the Saucy Chip wagon in the Brompton hospitality area, served by this lady. I have to say, it wasn't cheap, but it was the best burger I've ever had and worth every penny.

This is Ernie Rogers, a musician and a very cool and interesting dude from Chattanooga, TN. I was set up at Art 'Til Dark and Ernie rode his bike up to exhibition site. He was going around introducing himself (or saying hello) to the vendors and letting them know he'd be playing at future shows. We talked about about a lot of things and I'm looking forward to hearing his music.
Ernie is #27 in my 100 Strangers project and one of those people that makes life more interesting.

This old man usually roams around Liberty Square in Timisoara, however, between his rants I wasn't able to catch his name.
Hopefully as this project starts taking shape I'll be able to get better information from my subjects.
Another Nick - I had actually made this photo prior to Stranger #21, but had to wait to develop the roll of film it was captured on.
Nick was visiting the area from Canada's East Coast, taking in all the local attractions (Niagara Falls, Exotic Cars, local brewery craft beers etc). You can see here he has photographic interests as well. We chatted about the exercise of meeting new people and asking them for a photo as being an important way to develop confidence as a photographer. Nick obliged the request for a photo after he and I had bothed photographed a bright red Italian sports car.
Maybe NIck will join the project.

This is Ellsworth. He asked me to take his picture and was very excited when I agreed and explained the '100 Strangers Project.' Once I turned my camera on him he seemed a little shy so, I didn't get too many shots. I met Ellsworth when I was racing into 'The Markets at Highlandtown' to find a bathroom. There wasn't a public restroom but he was kind enough to let me use the employees. Thanks Ellsworth:) I think he thought I was a professional photographer. I overheard him discussing who I was with his fellow employees when I left. Flickr is as famous as I can make him. Always in Auckland. It was difficult to find strangers for picture: everybody was in a group of three or more people and it is difficult to ask in such condition. I saw another couple. As the previous one, they both were wearing sunglasses. I ask for the project and they agreed. This guy is widely more photogenic without his glasses, and as the stranger #47 , his gaze perfectly complete his expression, but in a different way. I find he looks more serious and a little bit perplexe maybe, with his screwed up eyes :)

his name is Cahyo
this time, me and two friends of mine were going on taking pre wedding pictures, i never did it before, i swear!! :D
he was a relative of the groom, who helped the groom and bride changing outfits in this prewedding photoshoot session, well, because i NEVER met him before and he seemed quiet, "this is my challenge", i said to my self :D
finally when the prewedding photoshoot was over, i got close with him and explaining about 100strangers project and asked him to be my stranger. within second he nodded and i took only two shoot since The Sun shone so bright (in Indonesia, at 9 am everyday a year is considered hot enough^^)

I've been to eat at Wild About Harry's in Dallas a few times, but today I actually got to meet Harry and ask him to be part of the project. He had a broom in hand and was sweeping up the lobby when I realized who he was. He told me he used to be in the "rag business"--ladies' clothing. "I used to sell them, not wear them," he said. When the company he sold for went bankrupt, he followed his dream to open his own hotdog shop. I posed him next to the hotdog sculpture out front of the restaurant.
