I've wanted to try the 100 Strangers Project for years but I'm pretty shy when it comes to talking to people I don't know. This week though I finally plucked up the courage and approached my first stranger :)
I've always been curious about Peter's story. For as many years as I can remember I have passed by him when I've gone shopping in Kirkcaldy. It turns out he is only a year older than me and grew up in a town just 5 minutes away from me. He left his parents home in Methil at 16 and has been pretty much homeless ever since. Over the years he has had the odd place to stay either with friends or a partner but never somewhere he could call his own. It even turns out he stayed in the same village as me for a while when there was a homeless organisation based there a few years ago.
We spoke about what it was like selling the Big Issue and some of the other jobs he has had. He has found it difficult keeping a job in the past through having struggled with addiction and health problems. He quite likes selling the Big Issue and has gotten to know many people having been based at the same spot for so many years. In the short time I was with him several people stopped to talk to him and see how he was getting on. He said that this helps with sale as people are more likely to give money once they have got to know him.

I set out for my usual area and was amazed at how many people were out and about; almost too many. I went off to one of the quieter streets, and as I was walking to find a decent location I saw Stranger #34 approaching. He was more than happy to participate, and while we were chatting, (and waiting for several people in the background to hurry up an move (one in a neon yellow shirt, and one in a pink shirt)) he asked if I was from New Zealand. Not a bad guess, but I did correct him with Australia. After Mr Neon Yellow exited the frame, I didn't want to hold Stranger #34 up any longer waiting for the glacial progress of the pink shirt, so I rolled off a couple of shots, thanked him (to which he replied "no worries", which was great), and let him continue on his way.
Thanks Stranger #34, you were the only one I got that day.

This my Number 2.
A lovely girl, called Charlotte. She was standing outside a pub smoking. Since the smoking ban in place in London, you can find a lot people, despite weather conditions, smoking outside!
She was out with her friend from Poland, initially they were a little bit reluctant to do it but then they loved it. They were laughing and felt ''famous''. Its strange taking photos on the street, inevitably people look at you and you attract attentions, some people like that and other don't, they did.
She a real londoner. London is such a beautiful cosmopolitan city and its has became quite rare to meet a real Londoner, born and bread here. She's from Putney, south west London, a very nice middle class rich neighborhood.

I went out for a walk around lunchtime today and saw my stranger N°56 walking up the road towards me. She was wearing an almost full length black coat and it looked great.
When I asked if she would be part of the project she didn't hesitate and allowed me to move her out of the direct sun and take a couple of photos. She did tell me that she wouldn't give me too much details about herself if I didn't mind. A case of she couldn't rather than that she didn't want to.
Meet Claire, she's around 30 and works in town, although she wasn't born here. When she's not working she enjoys going out with friends or going to the cinema and sport.
She was really easy to talk to and made taking her photo and asking her questions so simple! I gave her my card so she can find her photo.

I met Gabriel in San Antonio, Texas on a side street near the Riverwalk. I stopped to ask some directions and he was happy to oblige.
He was taking a break from his job from playing the violin in one of the mariachi bands in a Mexican restaurants on the Riverwalk. He looked very dashing with his black suit and bright red tie. He had such a warm smile. I told him of project and asked if I could photograph him. He was happy to participate.
Gabriel is a native of San Antonio. His great, great uncle actually fought at the Alamo. He has been playing in a mariachi band on the Riverwalk since 1988. He loves his city and wanted to be sure that I enjoyed my stay.
I thank Gabriel for participating in this project. I know that he probably makes many people happy with his music on the Riverwalk.

This is my stranger #17. Unfortunately, I didn't make it to remember her name.
She was a face-painting artist in the streets of Temple bar. The fish on her face attracted my attention and formed my decision to include her in the project.
I hope I see her again to ask her name, or she could send me a message if she sees that.

I met tattoo master Horiyuki (Jill Mandelbaum Bonny) at the Japanese American National Museum's new show (Perseverance: Japanese Tradition in a Modern World). She is the first non-Japanese woman to be titled (as a master) in traditional Japanese tattooing. A life-long student of art (Educated at Cooper Union in New York City), she began her transition into tattooing when it was still illegal in New York (she is from Long Island), and made her way through the underground world of tattoo art by nerve, perseverance, hard work, and a beautiful talent.

The seventeenth of May is constitution day in Norway. The celebration is also a celebration of spring, for many, and the tradition is that also the graduates from high school finnishes their 3-4 week long celebration of gradating. Curiously, this graduation-party - known as the "russefeiring" - takes place prior to graduating, and the graduates - known as "russ" - are knwon to suffer academically from this unfortunate tradition. What has happened, is that over the years, the finals have been moved from early May to June, but the habit of celebrating during the weeks culminating in May 17th has been hard to kick.
Anyway, I was out and about on this wonderful day when I ran into Mikkel and Johan (Stranger #39). They were catching their breath outside a waterholde (see in comment below), where I was waiting outside for one in my party. I asked them for a stranger shot, and they were to tired to object I suppose - 4 weeks of partying takes it toll.We chatted a bit about their celebration, got their happy and care-free faces on the chip, and continued the day.

I have had my largest lag between strangers since starting this project. It began with a family tragedy, then my laptop HD failed and my whole family got sick. I'm still waiting to pick up my laptop, so I wasn't able to process this photo as much as I'd like, but I'm ready to jump back in, so here we go:
My wife's uncle lives in a nursing home and is about to turn 78. We sprung him for a fast-food lunch and Ramon and Socorro were sitting in a group next to us. They spoke very little English, and they originally thought I was asking to sell them a photo. A granddaughter seemed to get the message across that their image would end up here (my business card saves the day again). The window behind them posed a challenge, but I had to take a quick shot and see what I came up with this time.

I have been wanting to capture a Liberty Tax Street Dancer for awhile and finally nabbed one! This is Darrel, and he's a young guitar player and has a band. He likes working for Liberty Tax and I hear they are really good employers. I didn't get a chance to talk to Darrell in length, but he was kind enough to talk for a bit, and was handing the 'baton' to a retired Liberty Tax man named, Roger.

The One Hundred Strangers project is a learning group for people who want to improve the social and technical skills needed for taking portraits of strangers and telling their stories. The method is learning by doing.
I was on the way to the post office when I passed Natasha sitting outside Redhill Station waiting for a friend. She was on the way to a BBQ.
This was my first shot at snapping someone sitting down which was an interesting change but I'm happy with the result. Thanks Natasha for allowing me to photograph you. I hope you're happy with the result too.

David is an artist. David makes pottery, and this shot was taken inside his studio where he was making dragons and frogs and all manner of wonderful items.
When I first approached David we spoke about the new goverment being formed in Greece, the collapse of the Italian economy, politics in general, football (David is not a fan), youth culture, literature and then my 100 Strangers project - well I had to broach the subject at some point. David was most obliging, and appreciated the fact that I'd taken up such a challenge. As an artist he was keen to help somebody with such a project.
What doesn't come across in the picture is David's very dry sense of humour. We joked and laughed together for about ten minutes before I pointed the camera at him. I like this image, I just wish it contained a little more of David's true character. A nice man indeed and I'm proud to include him in my list of strangers.
David is stranger number 8 in my project, and available to view on the 100 strangersgroup on flickr.
We continued our project and looking for a new subject. We saw a potential subject not so far from us. He had a very spiky hair ; trojan-looked. With a few bangles on his hand, wearing sleeveless shirt and his hairstyle, make him looks very brutal. He just get out from Sungai Wang Plaza and lighted up his cigar. We decided to wait until he finished up smoking. Suddenly, he got a called from someone and start talking through the mobile phone. He walked in front of us with a cigar on his hand while the other hand hold the phone. We can’t do anything he just got away. We missed out our golden chance!
We were really sad. But the project still have to be done. Then we saw two Malay dude walking towards us. From their appearance, we assumed that they were high class ‘mat rempit’. One of them who wore a sweater, was holding a fullface helmet. We quickly approached him. He looked quite shocked but steadily said yes. He asked his friend to hold the helmet for him and he put on the sunshade glasses that hooked on his shirt just now. And CLICK! Oh ya, before I forgot, his name is Hary =)
Romillly Street London.
Saw stranger # 8 and stranger # 9 in Soho. They are students from China and posed happily for me for quite a good length of time, the longest for any stranger so far.
We had a Korean guest speaker in our Sunday School class today. His name is Joniel (pronounced Jone Nee EL), which means “Peace of God”. He was born in Virginia, but grew up in Uzbekistan and is fluent in Russian.
After graduating from the University of Virginia with a degree in Public Policy and International Affairs, God called him to short-term mission to Ukraine. There, he volunteered his time to working with various groups – children, alcoholics, drug addicts, and other needy groups. He was able to use his Russian to communicate effectively with the people he was serving there, to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Although Joniel felt inadequate, lonely, and unsafe at times, he drew strength, peace, and power in God.
Joniel is now back in the U.S. He is planning to pursue a Master’s Degree in International Affairs at John Hopkins in Baltimore. Working in the mission field for the past year has strengthened Joniel’s personal faith and the sacrifices that one needs to make to be called a disciple of Jesus Christ.
Thank you for your personal testimony and sharing this morning. May God continue to work mightily in your life as you seek His Direction for you. On this Glorious Easter Sunday, CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN INDEED!

Had an amazing week in Hawkins exploring GenXYZ's Stranger Things build This month is flying! Monday, 10/14 we kick it off with Tim Burton Week!
This picture is my very first of the 100 Strangers project! It was quite hard for me to just go for it and ask him if he was okay with me taking a picture... He was a korean tourist, and barely spoke english at all, so we did not speak much and I even forgot to ask for his name (I was already so happy that I overcame my fear and asked him for a portrait!), but it was a nice moment nevertheless : the first one, yet surely not the last.

I met Laura yesterday, after stranger #18 recommended I stop off at Ben & Jerry's and try one of their new flavors of ice cream. Yes I gave into the temptation, justifying the gazillion calories by saying to myself, I'll ask my server to be a stranger.
It is my habit to stop off for an ice cream at Ben & Jerry's whenever I am in Freeport anyway, which is only once or twice a year. But I usually order one scoop of Cherry Garcia in a cup. However, this day I was feeling brave, so I ordered a three scooper of "Imagine Whirled Peace" (which is just the right blend of caramel & sweet cream ice cream, swirled with fudge peace signs & toffee cookie pieces). And lucky for me, Laura was my server!
It was very busy this day, despite the fact that Free Cone Day was 24 hours away, and I wasn't so sure my plan was going to work. Much to the surprise of Laura's co-workers (I guess Laura is rather shy), and even though our meeting was very brief, Laura graciously agreed to this photo.
Thank you for being my 19th stranger Laura, and the Imagine Whirled Peace ice cream was delicious! I am sure that you were swamped today, Free Cone Day, but I hope that you were able to keep that beautiful smile going.

This is Gail with her two Golden Guys, Boomer and Shadow. I met Gail and her guys at Pemaquid Point today (the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is behind Gail here). Gail has the good fortune of living nearby in beautiful New Harbor.
I had my Golden Girl Molly with me today, so Gail and I talked mostly about our beloved pets.
Both Boomer and Shadow were rescued by Gail, and they looked like brothers. Gail said they acted like brothers and were raised together (by her), but one was 12 years old and the other was 10.
Gail and I let our Goldens play together for a while (thankfully, most public places in this area are very pet friendly), and I decided to ask Gail if she would be my 21st stranger. She said "THEY would be happy to" and she called Boomer and Shadow over for the photo shoot. They quickly obeyed, and as you can see they are perfect gentlemen. However, they had a hard time keeping their eyes off of my beutiful Molly. I think she thought they were pretty handsome herself.
I quicky took this photo, because the dogs were anxious to get back to being dogs, but I hope you like this photo Gail.
Gail, thank you for being my stranger and a big THANK -YOU for rescueing two of the sweetest Goldens I have ever met.

This is Toby and he is a waiter in an Oxford restaurant where I stopped for breakfast this morning (partly to get out of the freezing cold rain).
I was apprehensive about asking to take the photo and didn't pay much attention to the composition. Looking at the photo now, I wish I had gone for a wider shot and included a bit more of the environment.
It was taken on a micro four-thirds camera with a 45mm lens (90mm full-frame equivalent), using the available light, which was incandescent ceiling lights and daylight from the window to the front of the subject.
1 down; 99 to go!
I'd seen the bicycle around town before, usually parked in front of the Taylor Cafe, a barbecue joint in the oldest building in town (the bottom floor of what was once a railroad hotel when Taylor, Texas, was a bawdy place of railroad bars and whorehouses). But today I met Joe, the guy who owns the bike covered with stuffed animals. He's a soft-spoken guy and told me he gets the toys anywhere he can--often from thrift stores. He said his photo was in the local paper a couple of years ago.

It has been a long time since I worked on the project. Almost 5 months since my last portrait. I was looking forward to continue and at the same having some stress again asking people to portray. But this one didn't give any stress at all since I did no go out to shoot strangers, it just happened by circumstance.
I was walking around some bourgondion wine yards to shoot some pictures when these three men came out of the woods. They started to talk about it being a good moment to photograph. They asked me where I came from and so we got talking. One of them was carying a short ladder around his neck, the other one a plastic holder with a topographic map in it. So I asked what they where doing and they explained that they were taking care of the signs indicating the pelgrims route to Compostella. And then I just asked if I could take their picture. They agreed, although all of them were more enthousiast about the other being photographed. These guys are up with their time, asking immediatly if they should give their emails to send them the picture. We exchanged names and cards, chatted on a bit about the pelgrimage and about what I was doing in France and then it was time to move on.

Funny one this, as I didn't know Jay, but knew of his car from some websites I visit. *How sad is that*
We went up to Light water Valley, for the UK's largest gathering of Subaru's in one place, The Norther Big One ( almost 400 cars)....* I sound even sadder now* lol
On the way up I saw Jay's car on the motor way driving up all steady. Must have been about 55-60mph
Once we were there I saw the car again on a club stand. As I looked round it to admire it, Jay popped up out his boot (trunk) and started polishing off some bird poo from his rear quarter.
We got chatting and passed comments about cars, car and cars.. oh and life etc and I asked if I could take a picture of him for my Strangers Project.. and I explaining about it.. handed the usual moo card etc etc etc
It turns out Jay doesn't live too far from me (Great Ponton, Nr Grantham.. I live Nottm, which is only about an hour away).
As we got talking.. the usual boy stuff.. He told me about his car that he'd had for the last five and a half years (a mint condition late 90's Subaru Impreza RB5) as it's one of only a very few still on the road. He's been offered a very nice amount for it recently but he didn't take it. But now thinks he might sell it (for the right money) and a Honda Civic TypeR he has so he can buy his first house. He'd like to buy the rented house he's in now, if the owner will sell it to him.
I told him not to sell his RB5 as he's never get one ever again as good as the one he has now.
In our chat I also found out his job is a car valeter and that's why his car looks so clean. Jay's girlfriend wasn't with him as she had to work, due to working at a car dealership selling cars.
Lots more I could type but I don't want to bore you to tears. lol

Finally starting this project. My first stranger. This nice lady is Jesse. She was taking her "baby" Charlie for a walk. Adorable pup, only 2 weeks old. We stopped to pet and ask if we could take a picture of her puppy. Then it hit me, this could be my first stranger project picture. So I asked her if she would allow me to take a picture of her and upload it to my flickr project. I didn't have my usual camera with me (Canon), but I didn't want to miss the opportunity to finally get my start. Thanks Jesse for letting me take your picture and being my first stranger project photo.
Just right after I got my shot from the previous guy, I had my eyes on this one. The way he looks kind of intimidated me, but I still walked up to him and asked for a portrait. He doesn't seem to speak english, but he still said yes. Though he won't look at the camera no matter how I tell him to. I still think I got a good one from him. What do you think?
Quite often the fun had by so many is down to the efforts of so few!
Let me introduce you to Oliver. Whilst out Iceskating on a local lake the efforts of Oliver came quickly to my attention. What isn't apparent from the shot, is that he is a "human snowplough" on the ice, creating and maintaining paths over the ice in order that the skaters can move faster and smoother. He is leaning on his self made snow remover and is not a beginner by any means. Since over 20 years on the occasions when the lake freezes over, he is one of the first there to check and monitor the thickness of the ice as well as keeping the paths in shape for visiting skaters. I learned that in times gone by, this was a duty of the city council but these days it is down to a few volunteers.
Oliver is actually a doctor and works as a specialist in the medicine industry. We actually spent about 20 minutes talking on the ice at about -8 degrees where we both decided that it was time to start moving again.

I have been in bed ill for a few days, then realised I had this week's challenges to do. One of them was strangers, so I had to think outside the box !! ha ha
This is Sheila Troutman from Dunellen NJ. I met her at the Sleepy Hollow Restaurant in Plainfield NJ. She was so nice and had so much personality. She actually approached me at the counter to ask about my camera and if I'm a professional photographer. When I told her I was a beginner and teaching myself she said, "Honey, that's fiiiine" It turns out her sister is a photographer and started out the same way 35 years ago.
I was very reluctant at the idea of approaching a stranger and asking to take a picture. I almost didn't start the project but luckily Sheila came up to me. When I told her about it and asked if I could take her picture she was thrilled. Look at her! She loves having her picture taken and she was all over the restaurant posing for me. Despite how accommodating she was, I was still nervous.
She's attending computer/internet workshops for adults and was at lunch with her (camera shy) friend. She didn't have an email address but I gave her my flickr name and my email address, I hope I hear from her.
Today was day 1 of the project: "100 strangers in 100 days" I got the idea from the flickr user Luke Reynolds I had spent almost all of Memorial Day weekend as a complete shut in and the loneliness got to me. When I saw this project I was excited. The perfect excuse for me to get out and talk to people. I was once a much more outgoing person but as of lately I've been an introvert. Well no more! I like to talk with people in the market place. It's such a colourful place with lively characters all over.
We usually go to the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv for fresh veggies and fruits, however, as we had some errands nearby Schunat HaTikva, a neighbourhood on the southeast side of Tel Aviv, so we went there for shopping.
I was positively surprised by the market. I met friendly people--Bereket was one of them--and bought fresh veggies, strawberries and fruits.

This is Chelsea and I saw her at the Ohio State Fair. She is with the Freak Show Tent and she is one of the announcers to round up people for the main act. For her act she swallows swords. She had everyone come close to the stage and feel free to get out their cameras. She needed someone to test that the sword was real which was me, and it was.
When she was done and the main show had started I went up to hear and asked what her name was and told her about my strangers project, no pun intended she replied. The performers come from all over and they meet together at different fairs, The New Jersey State Fair, Ohio State Fair, the Meadowlands and the end up in Alabama.

This is Nora! I was hanging out downtown looking for interesting subjects when I ran right into this gorgeous young woman, She was standing waiting for the MAX train to arrive and she was looking down. I saw this very red coat and as she lifted her head, this heart shaped hood - and then I peered into it and saw her amazing beauty! Without a thought, I walked to her and requested this photo. She seemed shy but agreed immediately. I didn't learn much about her but I was surprised by my own impulse to ask her, seemingly, without any fear. Maybe beauty does that to a person - we act without thought when we see it.
