Yay - the first 3 shots from my Olympus Om10 film camera. Very pleased with these!
Meet Vicky and Tom. Jon, Del and I were out for a stroll one Saturday afternoon with the film cameras we have all just bought. First chance to try them out. We went to Sandwich for a stroll around the rope walk and came across Vicky and Tom cuddling on a bench by the river. Their expressions caught my eye and after a lot of hesitation (not wanting to break into their moment) I decided to go for it and see if they would mind me taking a photo. Vicky was a little hesitant but Tom said yes so she agreed and I grabbed a couple of shots, hoping that they would come out. This was what I found when I processed the negatives - just denoised a little, some contrast and vignette and I was happy.
Hope they get to the site and find their photo and that they like it.

I was picking up my little girl from school when I spotted Caleb. I asked if I could take his picture after complimenting him on his hair and he said that it would be alright. Caleb is currently in school and has just started sporting this new hair style. I offered him a card and thanked him for letting me take his portrait.

I took this picture ages ago for my 100 strangers project but I kept forgetting his name and would have to go ask my friend....
So here he is. Meet Chico.
You will find him 'parked' outside of Warren's grocery store everyday in his wheel chair. He has been crippled due to polio that he got when he was a little boy. Both his parents died when he was young and he is raised by his sister. She cares for him, bathes him, feeds him. It is a big commitment for her. They are very poor so Chico is wheeled to this spot and many islanders also take part in helping the family.
He doesn't beg. He just sits there. But many will put money in his pocket. Or a juice box in his pocket with a straw on a hot day.
I save all my small bills for him and give him a nice wad when I go to town.
I am proud to make Chico one of my 100 strangers project.. although he isn't a stranger anymore! :-)
This is Dmitry, he is a 27 year old Russian-Canadian. He has been teaching English in Korea for 4 years now. We met at the hostel, and when I asked him if I could take a picture he even let me abduct him to this great graffiti-wall. We ended up spending the day together, including Stranger #13!
Thank you Dmitry, I hope to meet you again in another city!

She walked in and said “I am here to get Smart!” and all I could think was, I need her for my stranger project. Meet Lynn who came out to Denver for training. During class she has learned a few things she was excited to take back to work and we are only in the first day. Two more to go, lets see what else can get her smart.
She is from London, Kentucky USA. She is a golfer and got her first “Hole in One” last year, which I think is amazing. The location where we are has a golf course that goes around Meridian Ciricle.

She has 3 children, 2 of which still play baseball. One plays for the minor league and the other is playing for college. She proudly exclaimed she is also a Grandma.
I have my 100 Strangers Flickr page displayed in the background, but had the aperture too wide to tell what it is. I figured I wouldn’t get many other opportunities if any to get this in a shot so I thought it would be interesting to try.

When I first started this project I captured a lot of strangers in a short amount of time. I wanted to keep the momentum going so I didn't retreat back into my fear of asking strangers for their picture. It is still hard every single time, but much easier than in the beginning. That being said, I had my second rejection a few days after taking Stranger #31. I think I am always expecting that people might say no, but then the one time I had not considered rejection, I was rejected! Because of the situation (I won't get into it) and the way the stranger responded, I was really shocked, as was my friend who was with me. Anyway, I think this made me a little shy again as a result and rethinking who I ask for their photograph.
Many days pass where I do not try to photograph strangers (I am currently not working so I have a lot of free time). I told myself I would go for a walk. While I was out I saw lots of people that I would have really liked to photograph but I did not ask. I kept telling myself it was because of the last rejection (but really, I go through this every time). Finally I turned around to head home. At the corner across from the park I saw Rafa (like Rafael, he told me). He had a map of San Francisco in his hand and was looking at what looked like a iPhone (turned out to be a camera!). He looked like a tourist and I thought he was trying to find something on his iPhone so I asked him if he was looking for something. He said no, he was just out and about touring around the city. He smiled when he talked and I noticed he had braces! I thought they would look cool in a photograph so I asked him if I could take his picture and post it for the project. He said yes.
When Rafa posed for his picture he did not smile with his teeth showing, so no braces. I know a lot of people with braces smile so that you can't see them, so I decided I would not press the issue. Rafa was very friendly which made for a nice stranger to photograph after a rejection. Rafa is from Madrid, Spain and came to San Francisco for a wedding. The wedding was over a few days before and now he is exploring the city. I told him that the only two people I have asked from Europe for their photograph both said no and I was beginning to wonder if it was a cultural thing that I did not understand (of course, that is no longer the case!). He said he did not understand why someone would say no, it is such an innocent thing. We talked a little bit more about Spain and then moved on. Thank you Rafa for being such a nice and willing stranger!
This is Chris. Chris is prep cook at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He attended culinary school in Monterey and started working at the Aquarium while still studying. He has a background in architecture and his long term goal is to design kitchens from the perspective of a cook. He is also from my home town of Sacramento!!
First stranger taken completely on my own. Was walking out of work and took my camera out hoping to find somebody interesting enough to shoot when i saw this guy. His beard and hair were pretty cool so i thought i may as well take his picture. I didn't really think about approaching him, i just knew i wanted to and i did with ease. There were no nerves like there have been before. Got a few snaps, this being the only one in focus though (or near enough). I think with the dark and limited light the shutter speed was too slow and taking this camera to iso 800 is risky enough never mind 1600. Pretty happy overall though and he seemed quite willing to have his picture taken and was a nice guy.
I have also decided not to name my strangers as i feel with the project being about strangers, not knowing their name keeps them as even more definite strangers to me. (This is also just an excuse because i forgot to ask his name again)

I was driving around Hot Springs State Park on my lunch break and thought to myself that I need to get back on my 100 strangers project. So, I decided I'd ask the first person I saw. I saw Pat sitting outside of the Tepee Pools, which is one of the Hot Springs Pools. Pat was camera shy, but agreed. Pat then went to find me some "cute strangers" which is how I also got Jessica and Paig'es photos. Of course I told Pat she was cute as well.
Pat also gave me a "Pink Tepee" rubber bracelet and sold me some of her home made body products for gifts. All of the proceeds go to help people with breast cancer. Thanks Pat!

This is my neighbor, Ron. He has lived down the street from me for four months, and I have never met him. I have met his brother, and he knows my husband, but we have never met. Maybe I'm a bad neighbor, but you don't know my neighborhood. :)
I met Ron while taking a walk with the kids. He was sitting on his front doorstep playing with a little boy. He didn't have much to say, but was friendly enough. He lays concrete for a living and says it's hard work. I also learned that his niece is NOT his wife. :) That's about it.
I actually asked him to kneel for this shot! I felt really dumb doing it, but it helped my shot a bit. I'm not fond of the background at all, or rather how I framed the background. I was set on getting a stranger shot no matter what - and this is what...
I'm seriously bummed out. :( My camera is definitely back focusing AGAIN!!!! >:- ( It also has better focus in live view mode which was what indicated the camera was at fault and not the lens the first time I had this problem. It was working perfectly for nearly three months after having it serviced. I don't want to send it in again. I'm so completely ticked off right now and wish I never bought the camera or had bought another brand. :(

Stranger 15/100 - Faith
I was interested in photographing a block of buildings that I believed was slated for demolition, so I was surprised to see that one of them was having some paint touch up. This particular building was noted for the daily appearance of the bubble blower. Every afternoon for a couple of years he would open the second story window and blow bubbles with a machine for hours, sometimes well into the evening. Faith seemed rather interested in the story.
As we left the Purple Onion, which is a great little restaurant and bakery in Comox BC, I asked these strangers if they would mind being in my photo. I suppose it is a photo of friends and strangers, depending on how you look at it. For this week's strangers theme in Recording Images.
I was doing a last tour around the ”Quartier des Spectacles” when I saw Olivier, my 19th stranger, on the esplanade of ”Place des Arts”.
I went toward him and as soon as I saluted him, he smiled. Right there I told him “No, no ! Don’t smile !” before telling him about the project.
Why asking him not to smile ? Simply because I wanted to capture the essence of what really got me first; his seriousness.
Olivier accepted to be part of my journey without hesitation adding that he knows how hard it is to find volunteers for artistic projects. He told me he was into videos but while talking to him, I noticed that he knew quite a bit about photography too. My new stranger also asked me if I was shooting in RAW to what I answered by the negative. Don’t ask me why I am so f*****g afraid to jump to RAW... Maybe after my first round of 100 Strangers, who knows !?
As usual I’ve taken just a few shots. Five in this case and I am really pleased to have been able to accurately captured what initially drew my attention on Olivier.
Thank you Olivier for being part of my project. I hope you like your "surprise" portrait even if it’s not in RAW ;)

Tom Decker is from Berkeley, an artist, and makes clay pots among other things. There is probably an artsy way to say that better. I went to a local art fair this weekend and almost passed by his tent. There was only a smallish table with some cubbyholes loosely balanced on it and a guy sitting on the ground paying attention to his young daughter. What attracted me to his work is the primal feel it has. You look at it and hold it and you connect with a tool that people have made since before history. I carefully held a bowl that looked nice, but I connected with a different one that I would not have picked. I bought the bowl, which is a lot like this one, and I'm looking forward to eating dinner from it.
Up or down, it’s a strange ride…

I’ve been learning a lot about composition and decided that the speed of a state-of-the-art Nikon is no good for me in this stage of the learning curve. Working digitally makes it to easy to click a couple of hundreds times and sort out the best ones at home. So, that finely gave me a good reason to step back to analog, or, is that a step up?
I made a more than 25 year old dream come true by buying a Hasselblad 500 with a 80 mm Planar on it. This glass was the “kit lens”, but in the early days that was not comparable to what’s sold today as so. One of the last real specialist in Holland brought this beauty to mind condition. Then I’ve armed this beast with a Kodax T-max film and hit the streets.
The man in the frame is selling fruits at a street market in Rotterdam. I was already walking around with my new gear for two days, not finding a shot good enough to be the first one, when he entered the scene as a golden 100S opportunity. And then, a millions times thought over cycle came to live. Making and keeping contact, setting up the hardware, framing, adjusting shutter and f-stop, getting it sharp, push the button and rewind.
A couple of minutes later I restarted my heartbeat and came back to life……
This afternoon I’ve finished the 12 clicks of the 120 film and got the chemicals working. After the toughest job, scanning and NOT post processing in PS I can now proudly present to you ”The fist one”. Under this post I’ll show two more portraits of the same roll.

I saw my stranger N°80 as I was walking home yesterday after a meeting. The first thing I noticed was her hair. I caught up with her and asked if she had a few minutes to spare. She did and listened carefully as I explained the project to her. She knew of Flickr which helped.
As the sun was quite bright I tried to get her out of it as much as possible to stop her almost having to cover her eyes. After I'd taken one shot of her, I suggested she moved a bit more to make it better for her.
Meet Sophie, she's a 43 divorcé with 2 children and works at one of the local schools as an assistant. She was born in Paris and now lives in Dourdon, which isn't too far from us. When she's not working she enjoys playing on "Second Life" a 3d interactive game on the Net. (Think I've explained that correctly, never seen these things in reality). She also loves astronomy.
Sophie was really easy to talk to and very relaxed about having her photo taken and answering my questions. Although I did have to ask her to smile. She had hardly stopped until the camera came out ! I took four photos and we looked through them together and decided that this one was the best. I gave her my card so she can look for her photo is she wants to.

Maestro & Tracy
1rst word that comes to your mind: Maestro: red. Tracy: dolphin
Right after i saw my stranger #15 and while i was writing some keywords of my encounter i saw Maestro and Tracy walking and i knew right away that i had to talk to them. I loved the way they dressed and walked in a confident, zen and content way. So i closed my phone and ran to meet them. I arrived by their side and told them while smiling that they had to be part of my project because i thought they looked so different and cool from other people at the mall. I quickly explained what the project was, they looked at each other, smiled and agreed to give it a shot.
Tell me the 1rst FUN anecdote or story that comes to your mind and that happened to you lately: While Tracy was at Maestro's apartment, she was taking a shower in the morning and heard the door close. Since she wanted to talk to her boyfriend Maestro before he left, she took a towel and rushed outside to talk to him before he was out of reach. As she talked to him, she heard a "click" of a door closing behind her, so she jumped and tried to open the door of the apartment but too late. She had to call back Maestro to unlock the door since she didn't have the key so they laugth because she could have gotten stock outside with only a towel on and no way to get back inside ;). After talking a bit, i asked them how they met and she told me she was from Paris and he was from Florida and they met in Montreal because they had a common synergy with music. Maestro is a DJ and Tracy is a RnB singer. I asked them if they had any websites on which I could listen to what they do but i think they didn't have nothing at the moment unfortunatly. At some point Tracy talked in French, which got me by surprise because unlike most French from France, she didn't have any accents when she talked English. She told me it was because it was really important for anyone wanting to succeed in RnB to be absolutely fluent. Pretty impressive! I took the picture and thanked them for their time and interesting stories!
This is Sam Smith, a Navy vet of Beruit who recently signed a record deal. Sam took guitars lessons as a kid in his hometown of Spartanburg, SC, from the late Toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band and traveled on the tour bus with the band when he was 13. Of note, he says Caldwell was wounded while serving with the Marines in Vietnam and had a wicked cocaine habit.
Sam has had his own addiction issues. He directed me to a mini documentary about that: www.youtube.com/watch?v=slhregpNYS0. He is currently a student at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas.

I met Thomas at a football match. He was sat next to me, and started chatting immediately. An instantly likeable and firendly person, Thomas was over in England with a few pals to watch Liverpool and for "the craic", which should give you a big clue where he is from.
Thomas does not look happy on this picture. We'd just watched our team lose 2-1 to Arsenal and there was little joy to be had. I've muted the colours in the photograph in mourning for what appears to be the demise of my beloved Liverpool Football Club. Thomas had the good grace to pose for my 100 strangers project. Not sure I would have.
Debbie (I'm not sure of the correct spelling) is a photographer and minister in Husdon.
I ran into her when I stopped to take some pictures of a Henry Hudson on a stick (paper masks promoting the 400th anniversary of Hudson's voyage up the Hudson River) in a shop window.
Debbi told me her photos yesterday were of metal, and today of flowers (saying that she doesn't usually take flower pictures...). She showed me some wonderful photos on her camera back, including some great ones of a fawn lying down behind a iron fence in the graveyard that looked as if it was in a playpen.
Debby walks and takes pictures in the mornings, and says the town always wakes up differently... "Today everyone is raring to go..."
I took half a dozen straight forward portraits of Debi in addition to this one, which was shot without looking through the viewfinder as we talked. I found the others lacking something, not catching her look or expressions as I remembered them, chosing this one for the expressive hands and dynamic angle.

I spotted Marcus at Austin Community College's Rio Grande campus, and asked to take his photo. He was in a hurry, so I didn't get details, but I certainly love his look. I teach at ACC and have lately been taking a lot of photos documenting the campus, which was formerly Austin High School. They will close it sometime soon for extensive renovations. While at the recent Jacksonville air show I met fellow photographer Sonny. He had been to past shows and shared ideas on catching the Blue Angles as they blasted by at 400 miles per hour. I told him of the 100 strangers project and he graciously consented for me to photograph him for the project. It was a joy to meet him.
This is Sarah. I was in one of the Cardiff arcades and spotted Sarah at a shop door. I asked if I could take a picture of her and she asked what for. I explained that I liked to photograph strangers, especially pretty ones. She agreed, but didn't like the first two or three that I took. I couldn't quite understand because they looked fine to me. In the end, I took one that she liked.

Rachael was my stranger In Bath ! Confess didnt see it till now .. Looked up my notes to find she is an Aussie from Melbourne - With a smile like that , I would say she enjoys life. She actually sat next to me in the Abbey Square waiting for her Sister ( Both Studying in London ) They came to Bath for a visit / Tourist Guide. They had a great time , enjoying the New Bath Spa the day before. Rachel was delighted to be asked and gave me that incredible smile .. Hope you had a great time and how could I forget to put you in my project !?!

A retired lawyer, Shmulik lives in Jerusalem but comes to Tel Aviv for the weekend with his wife Miriam to enjoy the beach. I have never met him before, however, he was in a talkative mood and told me many stories, some about the writers Bialik and Frishman.
Shmulik was also a tour guide for high school students. And what a small world, he even knows our next door neighbor, a lawyer, too.
Stranger #10. Ed goes by Ed, yet also known locally as Eddy. He owns the Main St. Diner and is the sole cook. He has one waitress and one assistant. For five years he has severed locals and tourists alike here, cooking with a large grill right in front of everyone. His establishment is small, yet his charming personality large. While not cooking he talks with people and cools off away from the grill. When I asked him if there was any person or group that really stood out in his mind that had visited, he said he had served thousands of good people, but its not the good that stands out, it is the ornry people. One of them was a man that threatened to hit him with the cane. I salute Eddy and ask that everyone be remembered as a "good customer" in any establishment. I was on my way home from Whole Food Store with my lunch. A young lady was standing on the corner smoking a cigarette with beautiful long hair. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She was so fascinating. I explained the 100 stranger’s project to Tiffany and she said it was okay to take some photos. Tiffany works for an organic vegetable company and lives in Andersonville neighborhood in Chicago. The last time she had a hair cut was about 10 years again. Thanks Tiffany and I love your long hair!

Colin and Lyn were having a break. Lyn mentioned they were people watching in the sun .. How splendid !?! I nearly passed these lovely people by ~ but as I messed up earlier in the day , it made me ask them. So glad I did ... I asked to take their photo , Colin straight away asked how much will it cost. Lyn asked can they see the results , handing them my card – she was excitied.
They both wanted to be photographed together , which was fine for me. We chatted about the art and skill of people watching etc I nearly packed up , just mentioned do you have any interesting stories or Interests !! Colin laughed , Lyn said right I'm off ... You better take a seat !?!
Hmmm : Colin was a carpenter / joiner all his life and what we all don’t know till now he is on a mission – just wait and see ;
Colin is making a replica Pyramid of Giza in Egypt – one of the 7 wonders of the world ( please Google it to save time )

Say hello to Whitney. i met her at Hoppers (karoake night). She is really friendly and very photogenic. I don't think she is shy at all, she grabbed the mic and immediately started singing. i wish i had her confidence.

Weiping Que, or Anna, an electronics student, who ends up working on every assignment longer than everybody else, but never worried or tensed. Well maybe not technically a stranger since she's a classmate of mine. But trying to communicate in a language that is neither of our's mother tongue can be quite a challenge. In the end, she agreed for a snap, a little surprised that i was taking a shot with a film camera.
Yes, the lights are harsh, and makes it look like i've clicked this in a prison cell, (thats our Computer Lab actually) nor the composition makes a great effect. but i like it. plus since its film, and black and white. one of my fav combination.

I have this sick feeling her name isn't Libby! LOL! Why don't I remember to write things down? It seems when I take a few weeks off from this project, most of my shyness returns full force. I think this will have to be a life long project/therapy. :)
Libby was on her regular two mile walk when I met her. Her dedication is admirable considering it was under 20 degrees Fahrenheit. And I thought I was accomplishing something by stepping out of my car for fifteen minutes. :) She is a mother of two and runs an organic farm that raises sheep for meat and wool. I learned about her blog and her historic house, but with my nervousness I forgot much. Sorry!
I almost didn't get this photo of Libby. I drove past and thought it would be a little creepy if I pulled over in a car and asked to photograph her. Instead I went with my original plan of taking pictures with the kids and hoped she would walk by. She did. :) I am very happy because I was super disappointed about another photography idea I set out to capture but didn't work out.

This is Patricia i found her tidying up outside her house where it was still qutie wet. We have had big rain here last few days and she told me thier street had been completely flooded and you couldnt get in or out, both her cars took on water inside and part of their house that had only recently been raised. I had heard on the news 2 days prior about her area that somewhere was flooded. Guess i found the exact spot. despite only just waking up she was pretty keen for a photo after i asked to take it. she is my number 4 and her hosue happened to be number 4 so i decided to have that as teh backdrop :) also found out she is a local business owner and she runs a candy store.
I was walking along with my camera just after having taken a photo of stranger 25, near Canal de la Villette. What struck me most was the combination of the blue vespa along with the striped helmet. I was almost going to keep walking (mainly out of shyness), but had to get a photo of this guy. I approached him to take photos, and he was very friendly and didn't mind at all.
