I was walking away from Jaspers – virtually bumped into Juan resting across the path on his impressive bike , He had that certain weathered look ideal for the project lol , I asked for his photograph , explained the project mentioned he reminded me the two motor bike riders “Ewan McGregor & Charley Boorman ” He laughed and mentioned he met them both at the start of the 2010 Dakar rally.
They had completed a 12 week ride through Europe ( last year they rode through Russia and adjoin countries ) Plus completing in the Dakar Rally 2010.
He lives in the Basque country of Northern Spain – Bilbao is his home town famous for The Guggenheim Museum to which I visited two years ago plus walked where he loves to take his bike the mountain range above Bilbao ;

They were catching a ferry for the last stretch home being on the road for three months from Plymouth to Santander. They laughed and said our favourite place in the UK was Isle of Skye which surprised me. He clocked the time as we were leaving I took a couple of photo’s .. Had whistled to the group to start the engines and move on .. Thank you ( John but Juan is definitely more stylish )
Been away for a week i am a tad behind so this was taken in Plymouth of the previous weekend. Im glad I have reached my first milestone of Stranger#25 - It feels its been a lifetime of learning in 5 weeks but happily thank you as it is down to all the group who pull us through those early numbers ... here's to the next #25 !! Your critical help and advice is so important ,, Great to get those nice comments also

This man was so interesting. He told stories about his life. How he left his wife and how cali has changed his life. I will never forget this amazing encounter with this stranger.
Stranger 11 of 100
Alyssa was the second person I saw in the park near the mall while I was waiting for my wife to finish shopping. She was getting ready to start working on homework near the pond in a shady area. She was actually in the most ideal location in the entire park because of how it was lit and had it had excellent back drop. I believe she had walked by while I was photographing Steve and Ben (Stranger(s) 10) and I explained to her what I was doing and if she would be a willing participant; she happily obliged. At stranger 11 I am already starting to feel a little bit more comfortable moving the subject around. I was able to snap of three different shots at different lengths. You can find these shots in the album on my home page. I really liked the color of her dress in the green fields so I wanted to try a full body portrait. I ended up picking the close up because it was by far my favorite and her eyes really came out in this image. In the other images I thought the sculpture was a little distracting, particularly because we had not ties to it.
I chatted for about five minutes and was surprised she was working on homework because it is still very early August and my classes don’t start again until the end of the month. Either way she told me it will be her very first semester and that school was starting very soon and she was trying to get a leg up. In hind sight I would have really liked to tell a story with this image and I should have asked her to get some shots while she was working on her homework. I think it would have captured the enthusiasm and hard work Alyssa has for her future. One thing I really want to get out of this project is a way to actually tell about the person without using words.

We had nearly called it a day and, after a bite to eat, we started heading towards Trafalgar Square but still with our eyes open. As we cut through Jermyn Street I saw Saif sitting there looking very sharp. I approached him for a photo and he was game.
I turned him slightly towards the light and took a few shots. I have also put one of the pics in the comments section showing more of his suit. Saif is originally from Bangladesh but has been living in London for 5 years. He mentioned that a lot of people found it tough to find work due to the economic conditions but he was lucky in that his skills were in demand. He is a tailor and works in one of the shops in Jermyn Street, which explained a lot.

While on a vacation with my close friends, Paris approached us asking to watch her bag as she went for a run. We agreed, and when she returned we had a conversation about our generation of women, empowerment, and personal topics. Paris requested we not share her story. Just know that she is incredibly kind and I wish her the best in her journey.

I've had a hard time getting back into the groove of the 100 Strangers project this week after the accidental death of my brother. I've been in a funk and not really willing or able to ask folks to participate. But I saw Mitch today at Ricoco's, my wife's and my favorite restaurant in Taylor, Texas. He had a great look and cool hair. As he was leaving he put on this hat, and I knew I had to get him to pose. Mitch said he's lived in Taylor for a long time and used to work as an instrument technician. I'm still not certain what this is! He described himself as retired now.

Stranger #1
Seb is Australian. He is 28 years old. In 10 years, Seb would like to be “ in a high paying job and have a family of his own.”
The thing that Seb likes most about Port Adelaide is the simplicity of the place, it’s not as big as the city, it’s clean, there is cheaper transport and it is nice and close to everything.
Seb believes in God. He has a Polish/Catholic background

I'm pretty sure this guys name was Tim. I may be wrong. I never wrote his name down because it was so simple. This was shot in London. I was walking with some friends and I saw this guy up ahead. He had this super cool film camera that I wanted to get a closer look at. I really just wanted to talk to the guy. Tim was walking really fast and we were behind him then he went inside this park. I was about to enter the park, but at the front of the park there was an ice cream stand. I was torn. I could either follow this man and talk about photography or buy myself an icecream. I bought the icecream and then went into the park. I spotted him and quickly walked up to him.
One of the coolest things about this meeting was I wasn't even thinking about taking his photo. I just wanted to talk to him. I think once that starts happening you really get the feel about what meeting strangers is all about. But yeah, it was pretty awesome. really nice guy. We talked about film cameras and such. It was nice. I really appreciated Tim because he was a strong supporter of film. When he saw I was shooting digital I lost a bit of respect. "oh, your shooting digital" I quickly got it back by saying I had shot some film shots the other day. He also quite respescted that I was shooting with a 1.4. So once he saw that and heard I was shooting film I think he felt better. Haha. Super nice guy. Probably the best stranger meeting so far!
The funny thing was is that I was reminded to take a picture of him because he asked to take my picture first. I was like oh, okay. Quite surprised and stunned. I guess that's what most of the strangers are like when I ask to take their pictures. Haha. So yeah. He said he'll send me the picture when ever it is ready. And he is shooting in black and white film. WOOT!
I went with the vintage editing on this to make it look kinda old and fit the look he had with his film camera and all.
So yeah Tim, you have my email address, so once you send the shot you got of me i'll send you this one and the original! So nice to meet you man!

Santa Monica's 3rd St Promenade has been a great place to start my 100 Strangers project. Not only are there lots of people around all the time, but it also allows me to easily get a refreshment in this constant warm summer weather in Los Angeles :)
Part of the goodness of the Promenade is its overall management and friendly staff, and thats where Somonica - Stranger #07 is introduced.
Somonica works as a Downtown Ambassador in Santa Monica. She is one of a large team of ambassadors that help you when you have a question about the busy promenade. If you want to know where the best burgers are, where you can find that special brand of clothing, or help finding your lost car in the multi-level carparks - Somonica and the team are the people to ask.
Now approaching Somonica was actually quite easy. She was very close by when I was shooting Charles (Stranger #6) and was very interested in what was going on. After asking her if she would like to be apart of the project she gave a big Santa Monica smile and said "sure thing, what do you want me to do?". After a few quick shots I was getting some hrsh shadows from the midday sun, so we quickly moved over into some shade and got the shot. After a review and approval by the client herself, I gave her my moo card and was on my way again.
Thank you Somonica for having such a positive attitude towards the project and I hope you enjoy this photo.

On this Martin Luther King Holiday Weekend, I was at a swim center that was named after the civil rights activist. There I met Chris, the manager and one of the lifeguards. He was born and raised in Maryland and has been swimming for quite a long time.
Chris is currently attending Montgomery College and is planning to transfer to the University of Maryland to study aeronautical engineering. He doesn’t know exactly what he wants to do yet, but teaching is a possibility. In his spare time he loves to play video games.

this is my 26th stranger, i captured this along with 27th stranger (his girlfriend) :)
his name is Giancarlo Castro from The Philippines
i met him at Merlion Park, well this is a common story :p
he asked me to take a picture of him and his girlfriend in front of Merlion Statue with his DSLR, of course i accept that :)
and i thought i could ask them in return to be my strangers, explaining (it turned out that his girlfriend is Indonesian, so i did not have to tell them in English :p) 100stranger project and they accepted :)
not much to say, captured him in 2-3 identical shots in the evening, i should thank my 85mm for big aperture :)

We met Rod at Roath Park lake in Cardiff. He was sailing a model yacht on the lake and had just taken it out of the water. We talked about non-powered models for a bit. Rod is originally from Tenby in west Wales, but now lives in Cardiff.

Today I've learnt another interesting aspect of the project. What happens when you receive an answer that is totally unexpected; this is because we (the photographers) have a little advantage over them (the strangers): we see them, and we are those who decide whether or not to break the barrier. And if and when we decide to do it, most of the times they don't expect to be stopped and a little bit of surprise is the least we can expect.
But when today I asked Yorgos: "okay, and what do you do in your home country?" and he replied "I sell pornography", I thought: "What?". Then, while I was going home with the picture of Yorgos in my camera, I thought about the description of the encounter I had to write. Of course, in the brief conversation we had, he explained me better what he does (he promotes online subscriptions to a website of a porn production agency), but nevertheless his job is definitely not an ordinary one, and I appreciated his honesty in telling me the truth, he could have told me whatever he liked, in the end.
So, thanks a lot Yorgos for participating in my project!

My second stranger holding a Sony full frame mirrorless camera. He was resting on a bench when I passed by in front of him and noticed the camera he was holding. Exchange words about photography and he believed that mirrorless is the future of digital photography. He was kind enough to show me how focusing works on his A7ii. Justin works in visual arts and his office is nearby my office. I mentioned him about the project and he said sure to be part of it. Thanks Justin for helping and hope we can catch up in the street soon!

This is part 2 of my 49th stranger encounter:
Once it started getting a little darker it was time for myself and Colin to have a go with flash. Colin had bought his recently purchased off camera flash with him and was kind enough to let me have a play after he got some cool shots.
Nick and Laura would be the perfect strangers for this and were kind enough to be strangers for my 49th encounter. They had been out for afternoon tea at me hotel and were on their way back when we approached them. This time it was Colin's turn to be the light stand and he was fairly close on the left hand side. The flash had an orange gel on it which was in anticipation of balancing the surrounding light and also to warm the light up. There was also a mini soft box on it to soften the light. As a first attempt I think it came out quite nicely although as mentioned in the comments below it may be a tad orange (although not as much as originally thought.)

Meet Kirstin and Abby my 40th strangers! I met them today in the Grandstand Enclosure at the Epsom Derby. They were taking pictures of each other and I offered to take one of both of them, with the Queen's Stand in the background.
As they were friendly Americans, I decided to ask if they would be part of my project and let me take a photo of them with my camera, and they agreed straight away.
I don't know why I only took one shot, but I'm pleased with how it's come out and it captures the mood of the day.

This gentleman was collecting for charity in Cardiff today. He was with some members of Tredegar brass band. They were playing Xmas carols. He was a bit miffed when I said he looked a bit like Bill Oddie as Bill is 71 and this gentleman is much younger. I told him I took street pictures and often took pictures of strangers for my strangers project.

I peeked through the window of a church building close to work and I saw some interesting shadows that I thought might make for some good pictures. Unfortunately, the church was closed and I couldn't get in. So I walked into the garden to see if perhaps there was a back door that I could use instead. I bumped into Elaine, who was busy taking care of the plants. I asked her if she knew when the church would open and that got us started talking about my photography, the connection to my strangers, how we've all now become strangers to each other, to some extent, with the growth of cities and our busy lives, etc. She told me about something that she does, bringing in panhandlers to help her with the garden because of the satisfaction that achieving something through manual labor provides. She also said that one of them had actually become their official gardener and was now almost through with a rehab program to help treat his addiction to alcohol.
These are the kind of stories that happen under our noses every day and we don't know anything about. I've passed by that church a million times before, but never stopped. I doubt I would have ever met Elaine if it weren't because I was trying to get a picture. I don't know if by the end of this project I'll be a better photographer, but I'll probably be a bit more connected to my fellow human beings.
Elaine was all too happy to collaborate and let me take a few pictures of her under the colorful leaves of a red maple. The afternoon sun was coming through the foliage and cast a golden glow on her face that I had to tone down a bit. It was a difficult shot because of all the many lights, shadows and colors that made it hard for me to achieve a good lighting balance, but I think it came out alright in the end.

As the backpacking trip was getting close to its end and we were moving in a bus from Rome to Pompei, I noticed this lady in the same bus as us. She was wearing a cool hair style and showing interesting tattoos. So, I thought I was going to ask her to be my 3rd stranger as soon as we got off the bus. Then, we arrived.
I almost miss her as she was going away promptly. I did not want to chase her and make her feel uncomfortable. Luckily, she stopped to ask something to the bus driver.
Then, I approached her. After making sure we spoke a common tongue and a brief introduction, I asked for a picture complimenting her hairstyle, tattoos, and offering the contact card so she could later see the result.
At that moment I just realised she was not alone and her company was also departing quickly, she was very nice and agreed to let me photograph her.
Although, I was feeling pressured to let her go quickly, this time I made sure to move into what seemed to be an evenly illuminated area, set my camera to portrait mode and prepared to shot. While trying to make her feel comfortable with the situation, I explained about the project and we discussed a bit about it while I shot the first time.
The first exposure was very dark.
So, I tried to switch to aperture priority and set the camera to f2.8, but somehow I switched to shutter priority instead. Then, I asked her to leave her luggage just a bit for the pictures.
This, I think, was a mistake. As part of her luggage, she was carrying a guitar.
Caring for the technical details first, I failed to include her guitar in the pictures.
I also failed to ask more about herself, music seems to be an important part of her personality and I did not realise this at the moment.
This second shot was better exposed, her right arm tattoo was clearly visible.

She's my 9th stranger, I really liked her hair and the way she was dressed so I told myself I definitely should have her in my project.
I didn't get the chance to ask more things about her, but I know she's from Cluj-Napoca and that her name is Francesca (I hope I wrote it correct).

Under the warm glow of the platform lamp, strangers come together. Some headed east, some west... some will wait all night , some maybe forever.

I was determined today to get someone without sunglasses but being the weather that it was, and the fact that we hardly get any sun like this, or for any prolonged stretch of time, I think people were making the most of it by dressing and accessorising accordingly.
I stood around my usual haunt, asking a few folk but not really getting anywhere, when I decided to approach Vicky here. I had spotted her earlier, sat reading her book. I'm always more wary of approaching folk who are busy texting or on their phones, or reading in fact. I decided to make an exception and it payed off.
Vicki was hesitant at first saying that she didn't like looking at her pictures, but seemed to convince herself by saying "Well, I don't have to look at them I guess" :)
She said she was waiting for her contact to come who was a make-up artist (MUA for those in the know), and she asked me to stick around as she would be interested in the photography side of things. I agreed and in the meantime had a good chat with her about what she gets up to.
Aside from studying for a Masters degree, Vicki has a very worthy job of spending time with young adults in whatever capacity is required. It can be anything from taking them to the cinema (as one teen had never been before), to having a coffee talking about career prospects. It sounded like a great fulfilling role, and one she seemed very content in doing.
"Unfortunately, one of the downsides of working with young people, "said Vicky, "Is that they are always late!"
I couldn't stick around any longer and as I was saying my goodbyes she got a call from her contact who I suspected said she was 'on her way'.

Stranger 20 wanted to stay anonymous
I was taking pictures of the beautiful sky when she came biking my way with her dog trailing along side. I moved away but she stopped and said she wanted to enjoy the sun a little (she thought I was too).
I looked back at her and saw the sun shining on her face and knew I had to ask her so I asked if I could take her picture. She said yeah sure if it would inspire and if it was okay if she didn’t look into the camera.
When I showed the pictures she said how she didn’t like family portraits because you have to pose and such and she never comes out right. I told her I agreed about the real posing for pictures and a more natural thing is better. She is a very creative person I think maybe even a painter... We talked about art and paintings and making velt. She was even wearing a self made scarf of velt
‘Oh I still have chicken wings on the gas’
And of we went in a diffrent direction.
I’m happpy I ask her for the picture I almost lost my courage to walk up to strangers but what a good feelinhg you get afterwards.

Number 20
Grace and her boyfriend were looking through the second-hand items for sale at the “Hub” where Evan & I had stopped to sit for a while in the shade and do some people watching.
I liked Grace’s style with her beautifully crocheted top & shorts so I thought I find out a little more about her and see if I could also get a photo or two.
Grace listened intently to my blurb and just said “Why not.” So we moved to an area off the side where the background was better and started shooting.
This image of her is the first shot I took and for some reason I keep coming back to it. It was taken when she wasn’t really ready and wasn’t paying attention, but instead was fixing her earring. So in some respects this is a candid portrait.
Grace has her own on line business selling second-hand vintage clothes. It has the interesting tongue twister name of Red Leather Yellow Leather.
She aspires to be a fashion stylist and from what I saw on the day it won’t be long.

My wife & I went with some friends to the Pineridge Hollow market for brunch and to visit the many vendors set-up to sell their goods. Its located on the South drive of Birds Hill Park, North of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The market has a wide range items to purchase, from driftwood to baked goods to hand made jewelry.
I toured several vendors looking for someone to fit into one of my themes for the Flickr challenge. After talking to a lady about her photography photos, I heard a fellow playing soothing harmonica music, which reminded me of my dad.
The musician was starting to pack up, so I asked if he was finished for the day. He said he was, so I decided to ask if he would participate in the Flickr 100 stranger challenge, to which he obliged. Kim is retired school teacher, but hasn't stopped teaching. He tells me that he teaches the harmonica 4 days a week ( not full days, he's retired you know). Kim had a whole sheet of listed songs to play at the market, I asked what type he plays. He said mostly 30's/40's/50's music. I asked Kim if he can play by ear other than notes, he said yes. I told him he reminds me of my dad because he loves to play by ear as well. Kim played a Hohner Meisterklasse chromatic harmonica, it's sounded so beautiful, he is very talented and enjoyed entertaining the crowd as they walked from vendor to vendor. Kim said he has been teaching the harmonica for some 16 years and part of a trio called the Zipptones, named for their lead player, Otto Zipp, still an accomplished player at the age of 94. He said you meet the nicest people while playing a harmonica.
Here is a photo of Kim, I especially liked his t-shirt. It was a sunny day with lots of clouds and medium wind. She is friends with stranger #6
I met her through stranger #6. When I was talking to stranger #6, she asked me if she could bring a friend with her and was wondering if she could also participate in this project and I said “yeah sure!”. So when I met up with them, I saw her (stranger #5) and she looks very familiar. I have seen her a lot of times when I was still in high school and I actually find her pretty. She was with this dance group in school (as far as I can remember their group was called “melange”), and I tell you she has some serious talent with dancing! Like stranger #6, she is actually really friendly too!
When I saw her before, I have always wondered whether or not she is Asian and until now, I am still curious if she is full Asian or part-Asian.
If I could improve this photo, I want to have softer shadows and I want her eyes to more noticeable (more details and can be seen more).

Fionnuala asked to be called " Nuala " This was the harpist is was going for when i was distracted by the Clown !
I was attracted to Nuala due to music she played – I know from an old school friend how hard it is to play! She is very accomplished in what she does .. Magical !! Nuala has just come back from touring in Spain - Today just pitched up in the sun and played away to an impressive audience ! Nuala explained her name orginates from Ireland ( I was hoping to find out more ?? )
She played for my photograph but warned me she did not look up - But lucky enough she did for one second and the capture for all to see

This woman I met on the train. She had 3 kids with her...nothing special you would say, except that the girl first said something in Dutch and then French!
I just sat there as the little boy hobbled trough the train carrying a big blanket with him. I first made contact with him playing with a ice cream decoration...then I heard he woman speaking English to the kids and that was to much for my curiosity.
I asked her if all the kids spoke 3 languages and they do. It is because they live in the french part of Canada. She was Dutch and her husband spoke French and English is also spoken there so it is handy the kids learn all 3 languages.
The girl was watching a movie. ' Puss in boots' I only got that because she first said 'Le Chat Botté' and her mom said ' Gelaarsde kat'. It was really weird to hear the child repeat all the 3 lines so easy.
That is awsome I think! If you're young you pick up a foreign language so easy then when you're older. I still regret not learning an other language.
I took the picture and she had to laugh a bit when I gave her my card. She also made pictures of strangers but then without them noticing and she tough it was very polite of me to ask and give her a card.
We parted ways since I had to get out before them but I'm really happy with this picture...It's only a shame the dad is not on it! Sorry!

My Flickr Stranger #10 is Chasity who was busy working at the Gruene Mansion Inn
in Gruene, TX. For the record Gruene in Texas is pronounced "green" like the color.
She is originally from Illinois and has 3 children. She loves living at Canyon Lake
which is located near Gruene. Truly a delightful person to meet and visit with as we
were exploring the lovely grounds of the historical inn which overlooks the lovely

This is Angela. She is a student at Bristol university. I first saw he on the bus going to Cardiff Bay. She was with a group of people and I noticed her bright red lips and matching glasses. I saw her again wandering round the Bay and asked if I might photograph her for my stranger project. I took a couple of her friend as well and she told me she was Spanish and studying in Bristol. It did not surprise me when she mentioned that she was a model.

I'm falling behind in posting my strangers so I might be posting more than a shot a day. I'm thinking I should be doing the 100 SMOKING strangers because about half of the people I approach seem to be smoking. My theory is that smokers are in less of a hurry than non smokers. I don't smoke but there's something to be learned about taking a few minutes each day to take a break and decompress. I think that would be good for all of us.
Jonathan was standing on a street corner and I only had one shot left on my b&w roll of film. I normally wouldn't approach someone with only one frame left (I like to take two) but he started talking to me. I asked to take his photo and he yes but I better hurry. As I hurried to get the shot I asked what was the rush? I was thinking he needed to get back to work or something but he replied that he never lets anyone take photos of him. Jonathan seemed to know everyone in the neighborhood and he described himself as an outdoorsman.

Meet Billy. Billy is a Freshman at University of Navada Reno (UNR), studying Pre-Dental. After graduating from UNR, Billy will continue her education at a grad school somewhere in Navada. After graduating from grad school Bilky wishes to open up her practice in San Francisco. One interesting fact about Billy is she currently carries dual citizenship between USA and Italy.
I met Billy one afternoon as I was on my way to grab a bite to eat. Like so many others in Davis, Billy and I had pretty much the same idea - Lunch at Pluto's. As the line into Pluto's was already outside by the time I arrived. I thought I'd used this time wisely and keep my eyes open for my next stranger encounter. As luck would have it, Billy joined me line. I struck up a conversation and somewhere along the way I told Billy about my 100 Stranger Project. Before we got the chance to order our meals Billy had agreed at participate in my project.

Meet Tania. Our paths crossed crossed Christmas Eve as I was out during some last minute Christmas shopping. Since I was going to be out and about and so were a lot of strangers, I thought to myself, bring the camera. I'm happy that I did, because I met Tania. Tania was sitting at an outside cafe with her dog when I first saw her. I introduced myself to her and her husband Ben, (Stranger #05). The conversation was easy since Tania is a photographer herself, preferring to shot film now a days and just for herself. It was Tania who inquired to as why I was walking around with a camera. I explained to her the photography project that I was undertaking involving me creating the portraits of 100 strangers and asked her if she would allow me to create her portrait. Tania was more then happy to assist me with my project. Thank you Tania for taking part in my 100 Strangers Project and I hope you, Ben and your little dog had a wonderful Christmas with friends and family.

Meet Kirsty. As with a lot of my strangers, I noticed her at the last minute with her comfy leather headphones on (a Christmas gift by the way).
Kirsty is a nurse, a profession which I both admire and have great respect for - it's not an easy job by any means.
She is moving to Newcastle soon to undertake some professional work but she told me it was only for a little while, and afterwards she would be back in Leeds to work full-time. She had a genuine love of the city and "all my friends are here".
I asked her if she knew any good places to take portraits and she mentioned the Wharf area which was something I hadn't considered before. I thanked her for the tip, and wished her all the best with her job and career and we went our separate ways.
