Whenever we pass the old rock service station in Goldthwaite, Texas I always
wonder about it's history. (See the photos below.) So this day when I stopped
to take photos of it I also had a chance to talk to the owner, Mike Welch.
He confirmed that it had indeed been a Texaco Service Station years back and
was built possibly in the 30's originally by his grandfather and it was in business
until the 60's. He now uses it as his office for the Welch Stone Company. He
left some of the things that were part of the station like the soft drink machine
and the lube dispenser. He added things that were from days gone by which
just adds to the ambiance. Thanks so much for the wonderful information Mike,
and for agreeing to be #64 of my 100 Strangers on Flickr.
P.S. He does have an excellent selection of rock and stone for anyone looking

This is Mick, a great character who I met when he was buying a used Metz hammerhead flashgun. We chatted for a while about photography and a spot of local history. Luckily he was a willing participant and
regaled me with Brian Blessed and Topol impressions while we were shooting. I can confirm he does an excellent "Gordon's alive!!" It was a pleasure to meet you sir.

mark tennyson has been in "fire service" for 35 years. his background is in fire fighting AND museum history, so when asked in 2004 to be head over the museum part of the firehouse he has THRILLED!!! the museum is on the 3rd floor of this building (washington dc). as a side note, he said the 1946 engine behind him STILL runs!

this is my thirteenth stranger, his name is Soleh.
i met him in Magelang from my Town Jogjakarta.
well, Mr Soleh was a very polite man, he helped me parking the car i used in Magelang. before i went back to Jogjakarta, i asked him to be my stranger and he agreed quickly :)
he did not gave me upright posture (you can see it in the picture, the shoulders were not balanced), but i managed to take few similar shot and showed him. he smiled when he saw his picture,

A friend and me we're wondering trough a city when we came upon this man's lovely little tea house.
I was very cozy and small like three or four tables.
He told us how he made this his own and how he had ambitions to start a B&B in curacao. Just leave it all start again and then sometimes come back. Or if that was to much he wanted to turm a church into a B&B.
Now how great would that be?
I'm sorry I lost this...but I've been very busy and Yahoo was also not very helpfull! I really want to pick the 100 strangers up again :)

Marie was my second stranger of the day, enjoying a stroll along The Mall with her two sons and husband. I managed to have a quick chat and photograph the whole family in just a few minutes. She was visiting her son Rory (Stranger #33) who now lives in London from Ireland. They were making the most of their trip, despite the weather. Besides spending much of his time in the prayer room, Robert works as a tax consultant. He loves his job and has been doing it for over 20 years. He says he delights in communicating his professional opinions to others and helping others figure out their finances. Just by talking with Robert, I can tell he is a very smart and capable man. My 3rd stranger was the nicest till now, he was so nice, I can't believe there are people so nice like him.
His name is Bogdan (hope I remember correctly), 19 years old and studying Engineering geology. He was so enthusiast about the first trip with the university. I wish I would have asked him more, probably I will see him another time and ask more things.

(Stranger #06 : ASHLEY) Day 74: 100 Days of Spring
KINESIOLOGY...
I have to admit that up until yesterday, i have zero knowledge about this field of study before.
Then i met my sixth and first female stranger [yeeyyy =)], Ashley.
Me and my little photo group meet every 4th tuesday of the month at Coco's, and Ashley was our foodserver yesterday.
Apparently, she was our foodserver last month too because she remembers that my friend Greg spilled water all over the table (wtg greg, lol), where he was seated, and what he ordered. (i won't be surprised if she remembers me too, the cheap stingy bastard who everytime just asks for water and not order anything, lol)
I found that really impressive.
Really sharp memory she has (yoda speak), I thought to myself.
That was enough reason for me to take interest and ask her if i could take her portrait
(that, and her being pretty and reminding me of Jennifer Aniston in Office Space too, yes :p)
Not surprsingly, this smart gal has a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from
California State Univerisy of Sacramento and is working at getting her Masters degree in Physical Theraphy. Enough said.
Bachelor degrees in Kinesiology and Exercise Science: A scientific program that focuses on the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and biophysics of human movement, and applications to exercise and therapeutic rehabilitation. Includes instruction in biomechanics, motor behavior, motor development and coordination, motor neurophysiology, performance research, rehabilitative therapies, the development of diagnostic and rehabilitative methods and equipment, and related analytical methods and procedures in applied exercise and therapeutic rehabilitation.

Continuing with strategy of looking a block back from the busy streets, I walked past Nadim. I've not had much luck asking men if I can take their pictures but he agreed right away.
He works in Hamleys and was taking a break. It is probably harder than it sounds but I can think of worse places to work than the worlds largest toy store.
I like this picture because there is a strong contrast between Nadim's 'look' and the gentle and humorous expression.
What a great guy, thanks for agreeing to be a part of my project.
I'm off on holiday for a while so there won't be any new strangers for a week or so buy maybe I'll work out a way to approach people in France, even though I don't speak the language. Should be an interesting challenge.

2/100: Dennis

2nd day running that I had a chance to look for strangers, so I headed to Gloucester Docks.
I had spotted Dennis working on his narrow boat on the opposite side of the dock and decided that if he was amenable I would like to include him. When I reached him he was still busy and I was reluctant to interrupt so I waited, hoping for an appropriate moment. That moment arrived when (I assume) his wife approached him and he asked her if the boat looked better - he also looked up at me and I took my opportunity - stating that his task appeared comparable to painting the Forth Road bridge! He agreed, later saying that when he and his wife had bought it they didn't realise just how much maintenance was involved - the boat has to be lifted out of the water every three years to have the bottom repainted!
Dennis told me that he is retired after building up a business as an audiologist and that he too is a keen photographer and also likes to travel. He recently went to Burma, which he said was like going back in time - wooden ploughs pulled by oxen etc. There were two positive attributes in Burma that Dennis mentioned - amazing light for photography (not as much pollution) and NO MACDONALDS!
I gave him my card and explained about the project, which he had not previously heard about. Hopefully he'll get the chance to check out his portrait on the site.
Dennis and his wife are taking the boat up to Snowdonia next week, via the river Severn and a network of canals - I hope the weather is kind to you and you both have a great time. Thank you Dennis for the friendly conversation and for agreeing to be my second stranger - it was good meeting you.

Kyle works in a fabulous restaurant - Toulouse, in Saugatuck, MI. When I was vacationing on the west side of the state this weekend, I was really craving some french food and this place was awesome. Kyle recommended the crab crepes and organic salad with honey/goat cheese dressing and they were both outstanding. I also enjoyed a nice glass (or two) of some awesome prosecco with my meal.
Kyle was born and raised in West Michigan and has been bar tending for about two years. He's in school majoring in business and marketing and will graduate soon but plans to "sit around for a year" before finding employment in that field. Kyle is an extraordinary bartender and a great conversationalist. His work ethic is top notch and he really seems to enjoy his job. Best of all, he referred to me as "Photo Lady" on my bill. Cheers to you, Kyle and I wish you well in wherever you go.

After a few drinks a small group of us went to the Plain City Pub since it was walking distance and thought it might be fun. Janelle was working New Years Eve at the Pub. I asked her if she minded working on New Years and she said no. It seemed like the crowd was a bunch of regulars who knew her so it probably wasn't too bad.
This is Line ; Jesper’s girlfriend. Both of them just landed in couple of hours from Denmark. When I ask them, “Where have they been here in Malaysia?” ,they said this is their first time in Malaysia and Bukit Bintang is their first place to visit. While having a little conversation, I ask Line to write their name in my small notebook. Personally, I think that her writing was really cute. She wrote, “From Denmark, Girl : Line and Boy : Jesper”. Thanks mate!

I got a new-used 17-55mm 2.8 Tamron lens yesterday. I have been without a zoom lens for almost six months so I decided it was finally time to bite the bullet and shell out the cash. I took a dozen or so test shots yesterday but didn't really do too much until I wandered out in the early evening. I saw Sonia outside of Orange Salon talking to a friend. I actually ran across the street because she was so striking standing in front of the brightly lit salon. Then I walked around, trying to get up the nerve to ask for her photograph. I paced around, considering another alternative in front of a tattoo parlor. I finally went over and asked her and she said yes and said goodbye to her friend. I shot some photos outside then we went inside the salon and I shot a few more. See my comment for other shots. We talked for a little bit. Sonia lives here in San Francisco, but no longer lives in the neighborhood. She obviously works at this salon. She actually recognized me as being from the neighborhood.
It was getting dark so I brightened up her face in photoshop later (yes I will admit), even though I used spot metering to try to expose her face correctly. I was also having some difficulties with the new lens taking a long time to focus or not getting the focus on the focus points. I think for these situations manual focus would be better, but I am still getting used to the feel of the lens. I found several better facial expressions were not in focus as I wanted, so I had to scratch those. I had a really hard time deciding which of the outside shots I liked best, so I flipped a coin and went with this one (see the other in my comment).

Stranger #98 of my Flickr 100 Strangers is Tommy, who works as an Engineer for a local railroad and lives in Old Town Spring where I met him while I was admiring his beautiful Confederate rose bush.
He shared with me that it was a cutting from his mom as were most of his plants... He has a lovely yard with Bottlebrush, Roses, Texas Star, and Confederate Roses along with other neat flowers. He tries to plant things that will attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.
Single currently though he has tried marriage twice and takes pride in his Texas roots (check out his Tin Texas star, Lone Star trim, and his cowboy hat planter on his front steps). He really enjoys his gardening and loves riding his "Harley" motorcycle. Laid back and happy to talk about his lovely garden and gave his mom lots of credit for getting him started. Thanks so much Tommy for taking time to visit with me and share your beautiful garden... and for agreeing to be one of my 100 Strangers on Flickr.

I got done hiking around Evergreen Lake and saw these high schoolers having a good ol' time on their blanket. They did some great poses, and were very excited to have their picture on the internet! They asked me where I was from (Chicago). I asked them where they were from, and some of them could point to their houses from where they were sitting. We didn't talk about much else because it took enough time memorizing all their names!

Mr Laine wasn't hanging around, I took 3 photos and he said that's enough. After he told me his favourite record I asked if his favourite Beatle was Paul MaCartney but he didn't want to talk, so I thanked him and he was on his way.
The other 2 photos of him he looks quite sad, to be fair he was walking with a stick and had a few bags with him, but I really like his smile in this one, and I'm glad I asked him and I'm glad he stopped and I got a couple of good shots of him.

Stranger 29 is Officer Corey. Officer Corey is the partner for stranger 28, and both Officer Corey and stranger 28 work for the Lewiston PD. Like stranger 28, I met Officer Corey at the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony last week. Also like stranger 28, Officer Corey attended the ceremony on his motorcyle (top-right photo). In fact, Officer Corey and stranger 28 were the only Officers on motorcycles this day. It was a beautiful day, and although the skys threatened rain, thankfully everyone stayed dry throughout the entire ceremony.
The center photo on the right, and the photo on the bottom-right show Officer Corey standing by his motorcycle as the names of 82 officers, who died in the line of duty, were read in a somber manner. It brought tears to my eyes, but I cannot imagine what must have been going on in the minds of the Officers. I know that I am grateful to have been able to take this photo of Officer Corey, as well as the photo of stranger 28, because I can now be easily reminded to pray for their safety.

The weather was decent again so I headed out for a bit. I had stopped by a few locations with no luck, but got Stranger #22's attention as she was walking by. She seemed quite interested in the project and I gave her the Flickr address so she could check the photo out.
I had originally edited this in B&W but my wife said the warm tones suited #23 better, which I do agree with.
I seem to have neglected my Strangers again recently; my last was in November when I met Lucia. Today I went to do some street photography with friends from GNPC. We visited Columbia Road Flower Market, Spitalfields and Brick Lane in London - all great opportunities for people watching. On our way down Brick Lane, this dapper gent was merrily dancing along the pavement to some rap music. He was soon joined by a couple of other guys who seemed to know him and they looked like they were having a great time. My picture of the trio made it for Day #1511. But afterwards, I thought he was too good a character to pass up, so I managed to have a quick word with him. His name is Johnnie Walker and he lives locally to Brick Lane. He initially introduced himself by saying "I'm nobody" - but then concurred that he was, at least, a pretty snappy dresser! He is often to be seen in the area and loves the East End and its friendly inhabitants. It was great to see someone who appeared to have such joie de vivre, and wasn't afraid to show it. Thanks for bringing a smile to many people's faces this afternoon, Johnnie - the pleasure was all ours.

I had seen Nigel a little earlier running across Wells Cathedral Green towards his girlfriend. They stopped at the edge of the green and appeared to be texting. I asked Nigel if it would be OK to take his photo. He said “sure”. I gave Nigel my 100 strangers card and explained about the project. He asked if I would be able to email the photos to him and apologised that he didn’t have a card with him. I said that of course I would send him photos, which I have done.
Nigel was keen for me to take photos of Mikyung because “she is better looking” – which I did. I also took photos of the couple together. Nigel and Mikyung live and work in South Korea. They met in a bar where they got talking. They made such a good connection that they haven’t looked back since.Nigel works for DSME building tankers for the UK government.
Nigel had been showing Mikyung the locations in Wells where “Hot Fuzz” had been filmed. He had just been moving the car and while he was gone it had been raining heavily and he had worried that Mikyung didn’t get too wet – hence why he was rushing across the green to meet her.
Nigel was friendly, charming and very easy to talk to. Tomorrow you will get to see the lovely Mikyung and find out a little more about her when I upload my stranger number 39.
Thank you Nigel and Mikyung for letting me take your photos. It was lovely to meet you. Best wishes for you time in the UK and back in Korea.

I photographed Kirsty along with Emma and Robyn.
We started the shoot with a couple of group shots (to follow) and then I did some individual ones.
Kirsty has the most amazing eyes. If you view the image large you will see there colour and the dark ring which appears to surround the iris. There is no photoshop on the eyes at all.
I don't know much about Shawn other than the fact that he was very friendly and had no problems with my taking a picture of him. He's one of the many panhandlers that every city has, largely ignored by the rest of us. His deep blue eyes are something to behold. I could tell that he was happy, he kept smiling all the time while I told him about my project. He encouraged me to keep taking pictures, then we shook hands and parted ways. The bus waits for no one.

Mark is my third and final stranger from the 'How the hell do I deal with all this strong sunlight' series.
Great stranger, poor photograph, made slightly better with a bit of tweaking in PS. (But I've since had some excellent advice on here that should help in the future! :) :)
'Why are you in Newcastle today?' I asked Mark, expecting him to say that he worked here blah blah blah. But oh no. Mark was in Newcastle because...
'I'm buying some leather to make my friend a pouch for his hand fasting ceremony.'
'His what?'
'His hand fasting ceremony. Its a pagan betrothal ceremony/marriage.'...
Poor Mark was then subjected to a bombardment of questions from myself as I was totally and genuinely interested in learning all about pagan weddings.
I now desperately want to go to a hand fasting myself. I want to get dressed up in a Border Reiver outfit, hang out in the woods in a tent, drink mead with blokes in kilts...
What a smashing bloke Mark was - and very tolerant to the ear-bashing of questions he got. Thank you for your time Mark. I hope the pouch turns out well and that you have a fabulous hand fasting celebration in the summer. :)

Stranger are just friends we haven't met...
She stopped to ask directions. Perhaps I have a friendly face... she certaily did. She was out for a morning's exercise, I was out for a morning coffee. "Did I know the way..?" led to talk of cameras - she noticed two of my favorites sitting at the table with me - and to an invitation to sit for a moment & a cup of coffee together. Her smile lit up the morning. "Would you like to try one?" led to "May I use one on you?" and the result you see. Yes, indeed - a friend I had not met. And a morning well spent.

Pažaislis monastery and church This lovely man was was working as a sort of guide, official or self appointed I will never know. I was on holiday in Lithuania and staying in a former monastery which was now a hotel. The church attached was still fully functional. We were told that we could visit the church however when we arrived there was a service on and I prefer not to disturb worshippers. Our guide beckoned tried ot take us into the church but once I declined, he showed us the grounds and some side buildings. I am sorry to say I do not know our guide's name as he was deaf and could not speak. However he did a marvellous job of conveying some of the history of the place. I hope I conveyed the concept of 100 strangers adequately and hope he can be included.

This is Nate I met him on the streets of downtown Phoenix on a particularly hot morning of June 1st, 2012. I was crossing Jefferson St. when I noticed this young man sitting on a planter box with his friend Floyd and 2 puppies. I approached Nate and introduced myself and asked for his photograph. We got to chit chatting and I learned that Nate was only 21 years old. On approach I assumed this man was in his 30's and it made me realize how a hard life really seems to accelerate the aging process. He was not jaded though he still seemed to have a zest for life and I found him very engaging. Nate is a native of Arizona which is a good thing on a day hat was seeing temperatures in the 90's at 9AM. He introduced me to his pitbull puppy named "Scrappy" who was only 28 days old. Nate was very interested in the equipment I was carrying around that day. I had my Canon 5D Mark II and Minolta SRT 201 35mm film camera around my neck. He explained to me that in high school that he was very interested in photography and owned an old Canon film camera. Nate has tattoos above his eyebrows that say "Evil Side" but from his smile and polite disposition I saw nothing more than a lost kid who just wants someone to see him for who he is and not what his current conditions dictate to society.
This is Paul, Maddy & Brooke. They were running around Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square giving out free hugs "because its Martin Luther King Jr. Day". Judging by the condition of their signs Maddy & Brooke are more enthusiastic than Paul. I was hugged by all, however.
This was one of those encounters that just happened, and I was lucky enough to be carrying my camera. I'm struggling like a lot of people working on this project taking the first step of approaching someone and I try to visualize in advance taking several photographs of a subject for this project, but as soon I took this snapshot they were off to hug someone else.

Lanna, From Tonga.
She was inside a car, and asked me: are you doing good shots?
And I said: yes!
The following conversation takes about 30 minutes of my time.
I explained her about the 100strangers project and she was kind of scare, but she agreed and allowed to participate.
She said that she could come out of the car, and I said that I wanted to photograph the most original scene.
She was reading bible, and said that her favorite thing is preach, I though, she must be witness of Jehovah, guess what? I was right!
Lanna lives 15 years in New Zealand and got married with a Samoan man here in Auckland.
Before I leave, she preached few minutes to me and gave me 2 paper to read.

I met Irеna on the A to JazZ festival in Sofia. I came earlier while the light was good and went around looking for interesting people. Irеna agreed for some portraits and afterwards I gave her my contacts as I was in a hurry and forgot to interview her there. Irеna is a contemporary dancer and she also has an online store for woven carpets and home accessories. She works at a lawyer's firm for a living but most of all she loves going to the mountain. An interesting person indeed ! I took a couple of pictures and she picked this one for the project.

I feel terrible that I did not get this lady's name, so I guess she will be known as the Accordion Lady. This is not a candid, however she was an easy stranger for me. I approached her about the project and asked if I could take her picture as she played and she agreed. She is a "for hire" accordion player and you could tell she really enjoyed her music. She was quite good, too. I wish I could provide a richer story but she did not give me the opportunity to talk with her very much as she was on the job.

I also met Ediri @ d same fair as Stranger 6, Kiksy. She was modeling for a friend that makes and sells hair products (oils, serum ans other stuffs I cant wrap my head around). Her hair was styled right there and its amazing what transformation occured in a few mins.
She seemed like a nice lady with a lovely smile and laugh, so I decided to ask her to be a part of the project and she obliged.
