For "Cadence and Contrast," I wanted to capture the swift motion of a treadmill session, focusing on the interplay of movement and stability. My choice of a wide aperture at f/2.8 was to ensure a shallow depth of field, keeping the shoes and legs sharp against a softer background. A shutter speed of 1/1000 was selected to freeze the action of the running legs, capturing a moment of dynamism in high definition. The ISO was set to 125 to maintain image quality without introducing unnecessary noise.
Reflecting on the outcome, I believe my settings were effective in achieving crisp detail in the sneakers and the tattoos on the legs, which add a personal touch to the image. However, the fast shutter speed, while eliminating motion blur and preserving sharpness, may have also stripped away some of the feeling of speed I wished to portray. A slower shutter speed might have provided a slight blur to the moving legs, enhancing the sense of motion while still retaining enough detail.
My decision to shoot at f/2.8 helped isolate the subject but also narrowed the depth of field to a point where only a part of the subject is in sharp focus. While this achieves a certain artistic effect, it may not have been the best choice for conveying the story of a workout in its entirety.
The composition has an intimate feel, zooming in on the subject's legs and feet. This was intended to bring attention to the action and form during a run. In retrospect, though, widening my frame could have included more environmental context to balance the image and provide a clearer narrative.
In summary, while "Cadence and Contrast" effectively captures a snapshot of athletic exertion, my reflection leads me to consider alternative techniques and settings that could enhance the storytelling aspect of future athletic photography endeavors.
