This is a photo of abandoned public housing on the north side of Minneapolis in 1998. The housing, among the most affordable in the entire region, was about to be torn down to make way for a new, mixed-income community. The families living in this housing were relocated to other neighborhoods throughout the region. This housing sat vacant while opposing parties fought over its ultimate disposition.

The housing was torn down over a four-year period from 1998 to 2002.

This is a photo of one of the last families preparing to leave the public housing community on the north side of Minneapolis before it was demolished. Over 1000 units of low-cost housing were torn down to make way for a new, mixed-income community (now called Heritage Park). Most of the families forced to move were recent Southeast Asian immigrants; all were very-low income. Families were relocated to other neighborhoods throughout the region although 85% remained in Minneapolis and over half moved to other housing in the city’s north side neighborhoods.

Advancing women’s empowerment contributes to national stability, says DSRSG Walpole at International Women’s Day celebration

Baghdad, 07 March 2019 – International Women’s Day was celebrated today at an event organized by the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women at the Council of Ministers.

The event, which was supported by UN Women and the International Medical Corps, was attended by senior Iraqi government officials, including the two Deputy Speakers of the Council of Representatives, human rights activists, civil society representatives, the international community and many others.

Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) Alice Walpole addressed the meeting, along with Dr. Mahdi Al-Allaq, Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, who represented the Prime Minister; Dr. Thikra Alwash, Mayor of Baghdad and Chair of the Standing Committee on the Advancement of Women; UN Women’s Representative, Ms. Dina Zorba and UNFPA Representative, Dr. Oluremi Sogunro; as well as the Director-General of the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women, Dr. Ibtisam Aziz.

In her remarks, DSRSG Walpole welcomed the upcoming discussions in Parliament on updating the Anti-Domestic Violence Law. “We need to acknowledge that domestic violence diminishes and shames all of society; it is a threat not just to women but to society itself,” she emphasised.

Reflecting on the challenges facing displaced women across Iraq, DSRSG Walpole noted that “They continue to suffer the brutal consequences of the recent conflict”.

“Female-headed households should be prioritised in accessing public services,” she said, and called on the Ministries of Defence and Interior, and the National Operations Command, to “to ensure that secure clearance mechanisms are coordinated among security actors to minimize re-screening of individuals already screened; and to consider removing security clearance requirements for civilians who have not been charged with a criminal or terrorism-related offence, so they do not face obstacles in accessing public services, including civil registries and courts”.

DSRSG Walpole also noted the high unemployment rate amongst young women, which is double that of men. She called on the government to “offer small business grants to female entrepreneurs to help them into the business arena, in particular to women returnees in the liberated areas, and those heading households”.

“Advancing women’s economic empowerment in this way will contribute to the government’s efforts to achieve national stability,” she noted.

October 14, 2020. Swampscott, MA.

Housing activists marched to Gov. Charlie Baker’s home in Swampscott to demand that the Governor pledge to support and sign the Guaranteed Housing Stability Act (H.5018) to assure more robust protections against evictions and foreclosures during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Protesters said the Massachusetts Legislature needs to back a comprehensive eviction prevention measure intended to help stabilize renters, homeowners and small landlords for a year as Massachusetts weathers the ongoing coronavirus pandemic crisis.

The bill would ensure tenants cannot be evicted because of missed rent if the nonpayment was because of COVID-19, giving them time to get owed rental payments and other assistance in place.

It would also prevent “no fault” evictions and rent increases for 12 months following the state of emergency, guard against foreclosure and strengthen forbearance protections, allowing homeowners and landlords with up to 15 units to pause their mortgage and put missed payments on the end of the loan.

The march was organized by the Homes for All Massachusetts coalition and the Massachusetts COVID-19 Response Alliance (MCRA).

Additionally, roof rafters contribute to proper insulation, ventilation, and overall structural integrity. By gaining a deeper understanding of roof rafters, you can make informed decisions about your roofing project, ensuring a functional and reliable roof for years.

Roof rafters are the sloping beams that form the main framework of a pitched roof, running from the ridge to the eaves. They serve as a critical supporting structure for the roof, providing stability, strength, and load-bearing capabilities. Roof rafters are usually made from wood but can also be constructed using steel or engineered materials, depending on the project's specific requirements.

By precisely positioning and connecting the roof rafters, they establish the shape and framework of the roof. They play a vital role in distributing the roof's weight evenly across the walls, maintaining the structural integrity of the entire building. Additionally, roof rafters are designed to withstand the forces of gravity, wind, and other external elements, ensuring the longevity and durability of the roof. Their importance in roofing construction cannot be overstated, as they provide an essential foundation for the overall structure while contributing to its aesthetic appeal.

Importance of Roof Rafters in The Construction of a Roof

Roof rafters are crucial in roof construction, providing stability, support, and durability to the entire structure. These essential components carry the roof's weight evenly across the walls and foundation. Having roof rafters in construction is crucial, as they have benefits and advantages for homeowners and builders alike.

1. Structural Support: One of the primary reasons roof rafters are vital is because they offer unparalleled structural support. Acting as a backbone for the roof, they transfer the roof's weight to the walls and foundation, ensuring the overall stability and integrity of the structure. This support is especially crucial in areas prone to heavy snowfall, strong winds, or earthquakes, as the rafters help distribute the load and withstand these external forces, protecting the entire building from potential damage.

2. Flexibility in Design: Roof rafters offer a significant advantage when roofing. They provide flexibility in creating varied designs, from traditional gable roofs to more complex and modern architectural styles. With rafters in place, builders can incorporate various slopes, angles, and dimensions to achieve the desired aesthetic appeal while maintaining the roof's structural integrity.

3. Efficient Insulation and Ventilation: A properly designed and installed rafter system promotes efficient insulation and ventilation. The space between the rafters allows for proper insulation, reducing heat loss in the winter and preventing excessive heat gain in the summer. Additionally, adequate ventilation is crucial for preventing moisture buildup, which can lead to mold and rot. The gaps created by the rafters facilitate air movement, ensuring a well-ventilated and healthy roofing system.

Primary Function of Roof Rafters in Supporting the Roof Structure

Roof rafters play a crucial role in roofs' overall structure and stability. These essential components, including traditional rafters, inclined beams, and wooden beams, support the roof's weight and external forces such as wind, rain, and snow. By providing a framework that distributes these forces evenly, roof rafters help to prevent damage to the roof and the rest of the building. Roof rafters, such as upper and single rafters, are integral in residential construction, particularly in creating attic spaces and vaulted ceilings. Understanding the differences between rafters and roof trusses and critical differences in rafter sizes and materials is essential for efficient roof framing and faster framing.

Rafter spacing, roof pitch, roof slope, and vertical rise are crucial considerations, along with rafter length and rafter spans. Roof rafters also affect dead loads, especially in areas with significant weather variations. Components such as ceiling joists, rafter tails, and the downslope perimeter play substantial roles in the roof's functionality. Moreover, common roof rafters are used depending on the building location and specific construction needs, such as cathedral ceilings or specific roof coverings. Properly designed and installed roof rafters contribute to a durable and reliable roofing system while reducing construction time.

Types of Roof Rafters

When constructing a sturdy and reliable roof, one must consider the types of roof rafters available. Roof rafters form an essential part of the roofing structure, providing support, stability, and strength to the roof. There are several roof rafters, each with unique characteristics and advantages.

1. Common Rafters: The primary rafters run straight from the roof's peak to the eaves. They are crucial in evenly distributing the roof's weight and providing overall structural integrity.

2. Hip Rafters: Hip rafters are inclined rafters that connect the roof corners diagonally from the ridge to the exterior wall's top plate. They help form the hips of a hipped roof, providing stability and support to its corners.

3. Valley Rafters: Valley rafters are diagonal rafters that run along the lines where two roof sections meet, forming a valley. They ensure proper water drainage and prevent leaks in valleys prone to collecting rainwater.

4. Jack Rafters: Jack rafters are shorter rafters that run parallel to the common rafters and are positioned between the hip or valley rafters and the eaves. They support the intermediate parts of the roof and help transfer the loads to the exterior walls.

Understanding the different roof rafters is crucial for achieving a well-constructed and durable roof. By selecting the appropriate types of roof rafters, one can ensure the long-term stability and strength of the roofing structure.

Common Rafters

Common rafters are essential load-bearing members in a roof system. Placed diagonally from the ridge to the wall plate, they play a crucial role in forming the basic framework for other rafters. As load-bearing members, common rafters provide structural support and stability to the entire roof system. They not only help distribute the weight of the roof evenly but also transfer it to the walls, ensuring the structural integrity of the building. Moreover, common rafters provide the necessary pitch or slope to the roof, allowing water runoff and preventing water accumulation, thereby protecting the roof from water damage. In addition to their functional role, common rafters also contribute to the overall aesthetics of the roof, giving it a visually pleasing appearance. Whether it's a residential or commercial project, understanding the significance of common rafters is vital for constructing a durable and visually appealing roof.
