Willow male flowers coming out these days

Another woodland wildflower of Virginia. It blooms at the same time as the dog-toothed violet and, near our home, they make a carpet on the forest floor together. The flowers are very small, a half inch across at most. When you first see it, you think it is a little wild onion.

Happy Spring! I know it may not look like it, or feel like it to many of you...but just wait to see how much you will love it!

"The geology of Mammoth Hot Springs, located in the northwestern section of Yellowstone National Park, is in hyperdrive. In some locations, active springs are building up the terraces and mounds at a rate of two feet per year. That means the spectacle you see today will be very different from the one you see on your next visit.

So what's driving this extraordinary pace of rock formation? Unlike other sections of the park that are primarily composed of volcanic rhyolite, the mammoth area has retained it's ancient deposits of limestone left by a prehistoric inland ocean that once covered this area. When the limestone comes into contact with carbonic acid found in the Mammoth's hot spring water, it dissolves into a solution. When the water reaches the surface, carbon dioxide gas escapes and releases the limestone to be re-deposited as a mineral called travertine - the chalky white rock you see. Travertine, technically called calcium carbonate, is the basic ingredient in TUMS and Rolaids, two popular heartburn remedies. " (Yellowstone Expedition Guide)

Thermophiles (heat-loving microorganisms) create tapestries of color where hot water flows over and along the mounds and terraces of Mammoth. Colorless and yellow thermophiles grow in the hottest water; orange, brown, and green thermophiles thrive in cooler waters. Colors also change with the season.

It's hard to believe that this was taken only steps away from the Flatiron building on Manhattan's 22nd Street. I also took some shots with the building in the background, but this more ethereal version won out.

A spring house, or springhouse, is a small building used for refrigeration once commonly found in rural areas before the advent of electric refrigeration. It is usually a one-room building constructed over the source of a spring. The water of the spring maintains a constant cool temperature inside the spring house throughout the year.
