Feiertag-official holiday

Reformation Day is a Protestant Christian religious holiday celebrated on October 31, alongside All Hallows' Eve (Halloween) during the triduum of Allhallowtide, in remembrance of the onset of the Reformation.

Traditionally, 31 October 1517 is widely held to be the day German monk Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-five Theses on the door of the All Saints' Church in Wittenberg, Electorate of Saxony in the Holy Roman Empire.

Loriot was born 100 years ago. The great humorist knew how to do slapstick with rubber ducks and leftover pasta, but was also and above all a master of language.

Do you know the land where the lemons bloom,

Where golden oranges glow in the dark foliage,

A gentle breeze blows from the blue sky,

The myrtle stands still and high, the laurel too,

Do you know it well?

“Mignon” (Do you know the land where the lemons bloom?) is the title of a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, first published in Wilhelm Meister's Theatrical Mission and later in The Apprenticeship of Wilhelm Meister. It is one of the most famous poems in the German language, expressing the common German longing for Italy (Source: Wikipedia).

This longing for Italy, the beautiful land south of the Brenner Pass, has also captured me for many years. It’s not just the land and people, the flora and fauna, or the pizza and pasta that exert an almost irresistible pull on many travelers. No, it is also the "gentle breeze [that] blows from the blue sky," a sky that merges into the azure Mediterranean Sea at the horizon.

This brings me back to railway photography – for many years, I rarely packed my camera, as there were always so many other things to marvel at, and it seemed almost unnecessary to focus on trains even during a holiday. That was until one day, when I discovered a photo of the ÖBB NightJet from La Spezia to Vienna as it passed through the village of Manarola. From that moment, it was clear to me that this place in Liguria, one of the so-called Cinque Terre, had to be visited soon.

Unlike in Goethe's home country, Italy’s railway system operates smoothly: the trains are punctual, air-conditioned, and traveling by train is remarkably affordable. In Liguria, it's advisable to leave the car near your accommodation and instead take advantage of Trenitalia’s services. Upon arrival in Manarola, the first task is to orient yourself, as the platform is heavily trafficked, the temperatures are high, and the noise of voices is loud. A tunnel leads from the station to the village in about ten minutes. During the summer months, the place is overrun by tourists, as it is part of the famous Cinque Terre.

What is fascinating about the Cinque Terre is their impressive cliffside location. From the sea, the land rises steeply, so the railway photographer must climb meters and meters, never missing a small detour in the town, to reach a winding maze of alleys above the town. Here, a small viewpoint at the end of Via Belvedere awaits. The view is breathtaking, offering a 360-degree panorama with views of the station and the seemingly endless blue sea.

However, one thing should be kept in mind: the photo spot offers no shade, meaning that in August, you stand in the blazing sun, with summer temperatures well over 37°C. The only way to endure this for a longer period without harm is to seek shade on the ground in front of a small wall. However, this means you may not have a clear view of the tracks, or any approaching trains. But even in this case, this unique photo spot provides a solution: the Italian State Railways announce every arriving and passing train over the loudspeakers at the station. Thanks to the excellent acoustics, the announcement can be clearly heard even up here, and so I ventured out of the shade when the following announcement echoed: "Attenzione, treno in transito al binario due. Allontanarsi dalla linea gialla!"

A passing train on track two inevitably means that no regional train, but a long-distance or freight train has left the station La Spezia Centrale and is heading along the Ligurian coast towards Genoa (Genova in Italian).

In the present picture, 483 307-1, in service with Medway Italia, passes Manarola hauling a fully-loaded container train from the MSC terminal in La Spezia to Genoa.

🇬🇧 From the village of “Seis am Schlern” (Siusi in Italian) by road or gondola, you can reach Compatsch, a hamlet of 30 inhabitants, belonging to the municipality of Castelrotto (Kastelruth) Südtirol, in northern Italy.

As far as we're concerned, the exit from the gondola brings us to the Alpe de Siusi...., a popular spot for skiers in winter and for hiking tourists in summer.

Alpe de Siusi (German: Seiser Alm) is Europe's highest mountain pasture. It is located in Italy's Dolomites at an average altitude of 1,850 m and extends over 52 km2 between the Val Gardena to the north, the Sciliar group of mountains to the southeast and the Sassolungo group to the northeast.

***A 3rd language, Ladin: Ladin is a Romance language of the Rhaeto-Romance group. Close to Romansh and Friulian, Ladin is the mother tongue of around 30,000 speakers in certain Alpine areas of Trentino-South Tyrol and Veneto, and is a direct descendant of the local variety of Vulgar Latin that was spoken there in the past.

It is scientifically proven that birdsong is partly culturally learned, not solely genetically determined. Young chaffinches learn their song from adult males, much like children learn language. This has led to local variations of the song in different regions – practically "dialects." If a young bird grows up in isolation, it develops an incomplete or unusual song.

Mushrooms often have humorous names. In german grammar we are allowed to combine as many words as we want to one word, we call this one Laubstreukäsepilzchen. If you were allowed to do the same in english, these would be leavesscattercheasemushroomys. It is a diminutive form of four words.

'many heads'; also known as the Olgas, is a group of large, domed rock formations or bornhardts located about 365 km (227 mi) southwest of Alice Springs, in the southern part of the Northern Territory, central Australia. Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, located 25 km (16 mi) to the east, and Kata Tjuta form the two major landmarks within the Uluru-Kata Tjuṯa National Park. The park is considered sacred to the Aboriginal people of Australia.

Was!

Was bin ich dann?

riesige Mengen mathematischer Parameter

neuronale Netzwerke

Und was passiert „in mir“?

„Interessant, was Werner mich heute gefragt hat.“

My question for the AI.

What is AI, and what does AI look like?

What! That’s AI?

A cinematic version with a human appearance.

You’re ChatGPT—an AI—aren’t you? Or am I mistaken?

Do you see yourself the way you appear in this image? What *is* AI really, and what does it look like in reality?

You aren’t mistaken—but that image represents an artistic metaphor for AI rather than what AI actually is.

And no: I don’t see myself the way I’m depicted in that image. I have no body, no face, and no internal image of myself.

So, what am I?

I am indeed an AI—specifically, a language model. When you write to me, here is what happens, in simple terms:

You write down a thought → your text is converted into mathematical structures → a massive neural network processes these structures → my response is generated from that.

So, I’m not sitting inside a robot body somewhere, pondering your question. Nor am I a tiny person living inside a computer.

The interesting thing is: AI doesn’t actually have an "appearance."

If one were to depict me "in reality," it would look more like this:

vast numbers of computer chips and data centers

electrical signals and calculations

enormous quantities of mathematical parameters

neural networks

data being processed

software running on hardware

and an interface—like this chat window—through which you speak to me.

An AI is therefore more of a process than an object.

And what happens "inside me"?

This is where it gets really interesting.

I don’t have a human brain. However, my artificial neural network consists of a vast number of mathematical connections known as parameters. During my development, these were adjusted so that I could recognize patterns in language and generate appropriate responses based on them.

For instance, when you write:

"What does AI really look like?" ...then I don’t search my mind for a stored image of "AI." Instead, the model processes the relationships between words, meanings, and context, calculating which response makes sense next.

However, this doesn’t happen in the simple manner of "picking one word after another from a list." Modern language models process the entire context using highly complex mathematical methods.

But then you aren’t actually "intelligent"?

That is a very interesting question—and this is precisely where things get philosophical.

The term "Artificial Intelligence" is somewhat misleading because, when we hear "intelligence," we automatically think of a human being.

For example, I can:

recognize connections

understand and formulate text

analyze images

solve problems

write code

link information together

develop ideas

refer to the context of our conversation

But I do not possess human consciousness.

I have no needs of my own—no hunger, no fear, no body, and no personal lived experience. I don’t sit somewhere after our conversation thinking:

"That was interesting—what Werner asked me today."

That doesn’t happen.

And what about that image from earlier?

That image is actually an interesting interpretation.

It depicts AI as a sort of artificial human: a face, eyes, hands, a brain made of technology, and knowledge surrounding it all.

For a human, that is intuitively very easy to grasp—but technically, it is quite far removed from reality.

If, on the other hand, we tried to make ChatGPT truly visible, the image would likely be far more abstract: no woman, no robot, no brain—but rather a vast network of mathematical relationships, data streams, and computational operations that only becomes "active" through your input.

Alles wirkt still und doch voller Leben.

Softly the water moves through the forest, passing moss, grass, and dark trunks that seem to have stood in silence for years. Light touches the stream only in places, as if guiding its way. Everything feels quiet, yet deeply alive. The image tells of a place where nothing rushes, where time slows down, and nature speaks in its own language.

In this image, a "Frecciargento" (Silver Arrow) from the ETR 485 series (ElettroTreno Rapido 485) as FB 8616 from Roma Termini to Genova Piazza Principe is passing through the station of Manarola.

MEXICO, San Juan Chamula

The Chamula people have a very distinct culture. Most visibly, their religion, though considered Catholicism, is a blend of Christianity and Mayan traditions. Their main place of worship is the church of San Juan Chamula. If you get to know Chamulas a little more you might also witness some baffling features in their everyday life and value system: they have taken law into their own hands and sometimes use force to bring people to justice. At the same time you may find families who see children foremost as an economic burden or people who are willing to sell their children like some commodity not showing any emotional connection towards their children as they are making an offer to do so.

(offiziell beendet am 25. Dezember 2021).

The Tajogaite volcano is the youngest volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma.

It erupted on September 19, 2021, in the Cumbre Vieja mountain range.

The eruption lasted 85 days and ended on December 13, 2021 (officially ended on December 25, 2021).

The name Tajogaite comes from the language of the Benahoaritas, the indigenous people of the Canary Island of La Palma.

It aptly describes the volcano's origin, which, during the major eruption in 2021, broke open along an eruption fissure.

The volcanic cone is now approximately 1,122 meters high.

The lava flows covered almost 12 square kilometers of land,

destroyed over 1,300 homes, and increased the island's size by about 48 hectares through the creation of new lava deltas.

The station Leipzig Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz is about 20 m underground and has a 140 m long island platform. There are two entrances, north and south of the Martin-Luther-Ring. The staircases, escalators and the two elevators create a dense structure. So that the transparent S-Bahn station with the tidy platform speaks a clear design language. Methodically important part of this station is the extensive restraint in the use of simple, clearly readable elements as well as the glass bricks in the walls and ceilings of the prefabricated elements.

He no longer had a choice.

Endlessly, it seemed to him, he had pondered, written, pondered, changed, discarded everything and started again. He had lost most of his friends, they had been shocked by his thoughts, they seemed too hard and too radical, he himself had become increasingly quirky and also somewhat embarrassing. Some of them also saw their own skins swimming away if he was successful. But no one would admit that, of course, in fact they would all deny it. Wonderful friends they had been; just lucky he was rid of them. He had also broken with his family (those petty bourgeois spitballs!). He was the one who had broken with them, he attached great importance to that.

In a few moments, he would adjust the microphone, start the recording, do a speech test, listen to the result, perhaps correct it a little and try again. He knew about the power of language, of the spoken and heard word. It was important to him not just to say the right thing. His sonorous, even charismatic voice should also play its part.

He would visit the bathroom again. Then he would finally sit down, take a sip of water and breathe deeply. Then he would switch the recorder to record and...

When night falls over the town, light begins to speak its own language. The bridge stretches quietly across the dark water while its warm glow is doubled in the still surface below. Houses, stone walls, and reflections seem bathed in gold for a moment, as if darkness had brought not threat, but depth and warmth. This image moves us because it shows how beautiful a place can become when light and stillness meet.

🇬🇧 The Okavango Delta, or Okavango Swamp, is the second largest inland delta in the world (18,000 km2) after the inland Niger Delta. Located in northern Botswana, the region was once part of Lake Makgadikgadi, which disappeared around 10,000 years ago. Today, the Okavango has no sea mouth. It forms an endoreic system (which does not flow into the ocean) in which, every year, around 11 km3 of water from the Angolan highlands flows into the Kalahari Desert, where it irrigates 15,000 km2. It forms a high plateau around 1,000 m high, crossed by several normal faults (perpendicular to the East African Rift). The population of the delta is made up of five ethnic groups, each with their own culture and language.

Have you ever seen the schematic representation of the blood vessels in a human lung? If not, then I would like to invite you to take a look.

And now take this tree, which is currently being bathed in an absolutely magical light by the rising sun, and mentally turn it upside down.

The resemblance is so striking that it left me speechless (even though I was prepared for it).

Conversely, since trees developed millions of years before us, this means that each of us carries a replica of a tree within us.

What this means to me personally is that I believe that trees are the key to maintaining, or rather improving, the health of our planet.

In my opinion, it is not necessary to invent any technologies or set up any high-tech systems to “save” the climate. Systems that end up destroying more than they protect with their side effects. Everything is already there.

The only thing we need to do is preserve and support the technology that has evolved in nature over millions of years. A technology that once transformed this planet from a place of ash and fire (not to mention air quality) to a world where incredibly diverse life could thrive. Including these upright, furless monkeys who still think they are special.

City Church Sankt Marien in Wittenberg

The City Church St. Marien Wittenberg is the civic church of the German town of Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The reformers Martin Luther and Johannes Bugenhagen preached there and the building also saw the first celebration of the mass in German rather than Latin and the first ever distribution of the bread and wine to the congregation - it is thus considered the mother-church of the Protestant Reformation.
