Another from the bucket list. This is my first dabble with shooting water droplets using high speed flash techniques. The splash of the water drop is captured by shooting a long exposure in low light and at the critical moment firing flash at a very low power which 'freezes' the action (low powered flash emits light for a very short period of time).

I've been fascinated with this type of shot ever since I read Corrie White's article in the Jan-Mar 2012 EOS magazine. Indeed my shot is water-droplets-101, for a real insight in what can be done then visit Corrie's Flickr photostream at www.flickr.com/people/10756887@N07. Clearly I have a lot to learn but this is a technique I hope to have another go at before too long.

I manufactured my image using a Heath-Robinson drop set-up made from an IV drip and a water bottle. For flash I used 1 Canon 580EX II and 2 Yongnuo 560-III speedlites which were fired remotely using Yongnuo RF-602RX and RF-600TX triggers.

splash of water in the sunlight

During our honeymoon, my husband and me shot each other splashing in the waves. Those were fun. This is a photograph that i shot of my husband creating a big splash, so big that he got hidden behind it. I wish to live those moments again. :)

1st attempts at capturing splashes with strobes...set @ F8 & I used a Canon 580EX @ 1/32 power from behind and using it to fire a Canon 430EX @ 1/64 power from camera right...

Water with blue acrylic paint in the container. Water with red acrylic paint in the splash art kit.

My 1st attempts at water splash, i needed a better light source

this how i did the morining splash picture

notes :

- you can use normal light insted on my 220w flash

- i removed the cover of the soft box because i need light not soft light

- u can use external flash manually on 1/64

- clean after every shot, you never know when the perfect shot is coming

i used candle bar to create the splash, you are free to use any small thing

- you can use the reflector or any other light source

- aperture and speed can be changeable regarding the source of light

don't hesitate to ask me any question

Por que não tem diversão melhor no feriado de Carnaval, do que brincar de fotografar!

Three droplets. Shot in the kitchen using the SplashArt Splash Kit. I've used 4 flash guns here. Two behind the plastic perspecs with coloured gels and on to left with red gel and the on-board pop-up flash.

Tucked away in the back of Disney's Hollywood Studios, this fountain pays tribute to the 1984 Ron Howard movie "Splash", starring Tom Hanks, John Candy, Eugene Levy, and Daryl Hannah.

Today I tested a bit more the (splashing) waters. There is a device called ‘time machine’ (wish it were exactly that!) which makes indeed fantastic photos. However, after a certain point, it’s the devices that makes the photos – not the photographer. So I stick to any available hardware in order to take extreme close-ups without using a flash. I gathered all portable lamps I had (or could invent) in the bathroom and step by step, I increased the speed up to 8,000. The mirror helped. The result with the flash is better to my eyes – but I share these as well, cause they have a specific tension. I include a pacifist green dot, again with no flash, since apart of any available photo hardware I tried also some kitchen dishware.
