I don't like to fly. Before Monday, it was more than eight years since I had flown. It took a lot of energy and willpower to keep that plane in the air, but I did it. And flying has changed since I last took to the air. These newfangled TVs and mapquest on board. Amazing stuff. Knowing exactly where we were and how fast we were going was somewhere between excrutiating (at the start it was going way too slow) and comforting (checking in on the altitude every once in a while is a nice touch for the fearful flyer).
Sound and Speed at Nashville Municipal Auditorium, where fans of racing and country music had the opportunity to get up-close and personal with drivers and top-name artists for autographs, story-telling, and question-and-answer sessions. Attendees had the chance to view NASCAR showcars of yesterday and tomorrow, check out sponsor displays, and bid on memorabilia from the racing and entertainment industries as part of a silent auction fundraiser.

Shot out the back of a moving train, long exposure in RAW. Processed in Canon DPP using CLEAR picture style and on Photoshop CS2 for some noise reduction (couldn't do much!).

Dryden's SR-71B, NASA 831, slices across the snowy southern Sierra Nevada Mountains of California after being refueled by an Air Force Flight Test Center tanker during a recent flight. The Mach 3 aircraft are being flown by the Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, California as testbeds for high-speed, high-altitude aeronautical research. Capable of flying more than 2200 mph and at altitudes of over 85,000 feet, they are excellent platforms for research and experiments in aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, thermal protection materials, atmospheric studies, and sonic boom characterization.
A pilot is quoted as saying:
"... The Mach continues to increase. The ride is incredibly smooth. There seems to be a confirmed trust now, between me and the jet; she will not hesitate to deliver whatever speed we need, and I can count on no problems with the inlets. The cooler outside temperatures have awakened the spirit born into her years ago, when men dedicated to excellence took the time and care to build her well. We are a bullet now - except faster. Screaming past Tripoli, our phenomenal speed continues to rise, and the screaming Sled pummels the enemy one more time, laying down a parting sonic boom. In seconds, we can see nothing but the expansive blue of the Mediterranean. I realize that I still have my left hand full-forward and we're continuing to rocket along in maximum afterburner."
The theme for this week's 52 project was "other photographers." On an outing with members of the Ottawa Street Exploration Flickr group, I shot this photo of photographer Darcy Quesnel behind a classic Speed Graphic camera. The camera was actually in a glass case at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, but I asked Darcy to pose as if he were using it. The Speed Graphic was a leading news photographer camera in the first half of the 20th century, used by photographer Weegee, and also Sam Shere's photographs of the 1937 Hindenburg explosion.
