My first ever air to air subject, the Speed Canard. Later in the day I flew in the backseat of this agile little aircraft.

60009 Union of South Africa (built in 1937) alongside modern high speed train outside Worcester Shrub Hill station. Notice how the locomotives are similar in shape.
Union of South Africa is a class A4 locomotive and sister of the famous Mallard.
Not my best shot due to the position of the sun but had to share it.

"And the mismatched engines, and the missing panels across most all of the thing?"
"Pretty sure the engines are a pair, just... yeah, it'll need some work. But you're looking at what it is, not what it could be."
"What I'm looking at is a deathtrap."
"Glass is always half empty with you, huh?"
"This glass is shattered and in pieces, lad. In fact, you'll note the lack of a cockpit canopy at all, glass or otherwise."
"Look, you've got to start somewhere. And why not here?"
"Hey, it's your decision in the end. Your credits. I just don't want it to be your firey death."

"You think I can make it work. Still, I said I'd be your mechanic, so I guess I'd better prove I've still got the touch when it comes to racers."

So this was a pretty quick build, it may well be that some kind of racing speeders will form the next display I do. I wanted to try a narrative of sorts with this, starting from a junkyard scrapper, and gradually improving and refining until we get something sleek and advanced.
In terms of the build itself I've tried to go as greebly as I can for exposed engine bits, and fresh off my ADU builds I've put those spoiler parts back to work as intakes. Nothing hugely complicated here, but I'm satisfied with the skeletal appearance and think that it came out alright. Plenty of room to iterate on this.
I was trying to keep it as small as possible, it's about 18ish studs wide and long, so hopefully I'll be able to fit builds of that/similar size into this year's SHIP, which I'm envisioning as something of a mobile home/workshop/garage such as one might find on a Star Wars-inspired racing circuit series.
(I think I just want to build something that looks like a LMH/LMdH prototype racer but in space. Honestly, the Ferrari 499P already looks like a spaceship that just happens to have wheels!)

I went down to Laguna Seca late last month to check out the Speed Ventures track day and Radical Sports car and EXR races. I took a bunch of photos digitally (to be posted shortly), but also brought along a new-to-me old film SLR; a Nikon F-801s. I thought this was supposed to AF with all of my Nikkor lenses, but it wouldn't work for me; so pardon some missed-focus shots; I had to do it manually. If R1 is in the image name, it was taken on Agfa Photo Vista 200; R2 was Ektar 100. Taken with one of the following lenses:

Speed limit according to a walking speed of 10 kmph (6.2 mph). Normally half of this is deemed to be walking speed. Sign of a fast moving time. Altstätten, Switzerland, industrial area, Oct 22, 2007.

This was Jesse James bike parked outside the office of the Austin Speed Shop. Pretty cool. The theme was based on his Pitbill, Cisco. It goes without saying that the bike was drawing crowds and dropping jaws.
If you live anywhere around Austin and love old school cars you have to drop by the Speed Shop. Their office is open to the public and they have huge glass windows looking out over the shop. The equipment they use to make over the cars is just as cool as the cars themselves. The place is like a time machine. Everything about it is authentic. It's hard to define what makes one place real and another place fake. It's an attitude and a swagger. Nobody at the Speed Shop is trying to look pretty or trying to look hard. They just are being. The same way James Dean just was cool. The same way Brando just was cool. The same way that Steve McQueen just was cool. The Austin Speed Shop is cool.
