Bought a £6 lamp from CPC. Cut the mains plug off it, spliced down the brown and blue cables within and added clips to them.

Put in a 2W LED bulb and voila - you have a battery powered lamp. That £10 7Ah battery will run this 12V light for about 30 hours. Our typical 100Ah batteries will run it for 500 hours.

And it is bright!

THE STRICKLAND FAMILY HAS LIVED AT SIZERGH FOR MORE THAN 750 YEARS, AND IT REMAINS THEIR HOME TODAY. SET IN LARGE, BEAUTIFULLY LANDSCAPED GARDENS AND BASED ON AN IMPRESSIVE 13TH CENTURY SOLAR TOWER.

SIZERGH CASTLE ISN’T REALLY A CASTLE AT ALL. ALTHOUGH IT HAS A LARGE DEFENSIVE SOLAR TOWER, A POTENT SYMBOL OF THE POWER OF THE STRICKLAND FAMILY THROUGHOUT THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD, IT IS REALLY JUST A GRAND COUNTRY HOUSE. PROMINENT PARTS OF THE HOUSE DATE FROM THE ELIZABETHAN, INCLUDING THE DARK WOOD PANELLED INTERIORS, AND GEORGIAN-ERAS.

THE HOUSE IS SET IN A LARGE COUNTRY PARK, THE FIRST, DRAMATIC, SIGHT OF THE BUILDING COMES AS YOU WALK ACROSS THE PARK FROM THE SOUTH. THE LONG WALK THROUGH THE GROUNDS, PASSING SOME LOVELY OLD TREES, GIVES YOU SOME IDEA OF THE FORMER WEALTH OF THE FAMILY THAT LIVED HERE.

MUCH HISTORY IS BOUND UP IN SIZERGH CASTLE, INCLUDING THE POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS TURMOIL OF THE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURIES. UNTIL THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY, THE STRICKLAND FAMILY WERE DEEPLY INVOLVED IN THE EVENTS OF ENGLISH HISTORY. DESPITE HAVING A CENTRAL ROLE IN THIS TURMOIL, THEY MANAGED TO RETAIN OWNERSHIP OF SIZERGH CASTLE UNTIL THE 20TH CENTURY. THE FAMILY ‘GAVE’ THE HOUSE TO THE NATIONAL TRUST IN 1950, BUT NEGOTIATED A PRETTY GOOD DEAL. THEY CONTINUE TO LIVE THERE AND PUBLIC ACCESS IS RESTRICTED TO FOUR HOURS PER DAY, FIVE DAYS PER WEEK.

THE STRICKLAND FAMILY ARRIVED IN ENGLAND AS PART OF THE NORMAN CONQUEST, AND WERE GRANTED LAND IN CUMBRIA. SIZERGH CASTLE CAME INTO THEIR HANDS THROUGH MARRIAGE. THOMAS STRICKLAND CAME TO PROMINENCE DURING THE BATTLE OF AGINCOURT IN 1415, CARRYING THE FLAG OF ST. GEORGE (A GREAT HONOUR APPARENTLY). MORE IMPORTANTLY, STRICKLAND BROUGHT WITH HIM A COMPLEMENT OF ARCHERS. THE BOWMEN OF KENDAL WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN THE ENGLISH VICTORY AGAINST OVERWHELMING FRENCH ODDS.

Activ Solar constructed Ukraine's first large-scale Photovoltaic power plant 7.5 MW Rodnikovoye Solar Park in February 2011. The power plant is built near the town of Rodnikovoye, about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) away from Simferopol, the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The total number of solar modules installed reach about 33,800 on a total surface area of approximately 15 hectares (37 acres)

Mid Corona from the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse. Unfortunately, the solar filter on my telescope got stuck and it took almost a minute to get it loose. Alas, the sun came back out before I got to the longer exposures I had planned. My Img_1115 earlier in my photo stream was my longest exposure at 1/60s I got before the sun appeared. That image includes a 2 stop or so burn and thus is a bit noisy. Here I finally got around to trying my hand at stacking the images I got to improve my signal to noise. This image is a stack of four images (2 @1/125s exposure and 2 @1/60s exposure). I think it is an improvement on my single img_1115.

The star Regulus is seen at the left of the image.

The principle of concentrated solar power (CSP) plants is simple: curved sun-tracking mirrors capture sunlight and concentrate it on a solar receiver tube. A transfer medium, mainly oil, flows through this tube, and is heated by the concentrated solar radiation. This medium transfers its heat to water, generating steam. The steam drives a turbine, which then drives a generator. Finally, the generator produces electricity..While the technical principles of CSP were established a long time ago, the current challenge is enhancing plant efficiency. Experts expect that CSP plants could be economically competitive within 15 years, allowing the gradual phase-out of subsidies for electricity generated.in these plants....Das Grundprinzip von Solarthermie-Kraftwerken ist einfach: Parabolspiegel konzentrieren das Sonnenlicht auf sogenannte Receiverrohre.

Taiwan people can see solar eclipse for over two hours this morning

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- People in Taiwan will have a rare opportunity to watch a spectacular solar eclipse for more than two hours this morning. Experts remind people to use protective lenses to avoid retina damage from viewing the natural phenomenon with the naked eye. The longest total solar eclipse of the century will occur today and people in Taiwan will be able to see between up to 68.6 percent and 86 percent of the eclipse of the sun depending on various locations on the island, according to the Astronomical Observatory under the Central Weather Bureau.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon's orbit moves between the Earth and the sun so that the sun's disc is fully or partially covered temporarily.

The event will be visible in many parts of Asia, but the total eclipse will be seen only along a narrow corridor stretching from northern India, eastern Nepal, northern Bangladesh, Bhutan, the northern tip of Myanmar, central China and the Pacific Ocean, including the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa), Marshall Islands and Kiribati.

The full eclipse will last for 6 minutes 39 seconds.

Taiwan, which is located very close to the corridor, will see a partial eclipse starting at 8:22 a.m., with the maximum eclipse expected to appear between 9:36 a.m. and 9:41 a.m. this morning.

Residents on the frontline island of Kinmen will catch the earliest glimpses of the eclipse starting at 8:18 a.m.

People in southern Tainan County will be the earliest on the island of Taiwan beginning at 8:22 a.m.

The biggest glimpse of the eclipse of the sun at 86.8 percent will be experienced on the Fuguei Islet of Taoyuan County's Shihmen Township in northern Taiwan, and a 70 percent eclipse can be observed in central and southern Taiwan, the officials said.

In Taiwan's southern tip of Oluanbi in Pingtung County, viewers will see 68.6 percent eclipse of the sun.

In Taipei area, the partial eclipse will start at 8:23 a.m. and continue for two hours and 42 minutes until 11:05 a.m. with the maximum eclipse occurring at 9:40 a.m.

To mark the spectacular natural event, various organizations have long prepared for the arrival of this solar eclipse. Some have even dispatched teams to different cities in China.

The Chiayi Amateur Astronomers Association will broadcast it live online from Taiwan and China.

Yeh Shang-ai, a spokesman for the association, said the broadcast will be a cooperation project with various local elementary schools. Lantan Elementary School in Chiayi City will be the main site of the broadcast, while another team will send live images from Jiangsu Province's Suzhou City, one of the Chinese cities located in the path of total eclipse viewing. This will allow viewers to see the total eclipse without having to travel abroad, Yeh said.

The broadcast will be available at hichannel.hinet.net/event/2009tse/ and map.answerbox.net/2009tse, Yeh said.

The National Museum of Natural Science in central Taichung City will connect its telescope to a TV monitor to give visitors a closer view of the solar eclipse.

For those who wish to watch the phenomenon on their own, the museum is advising that they take proper precautions, such as wearing solar eclipse glasses to protect the eyes.

People should purchase proper eclipse plates at the optical stores since most sunglasses are unable to totally block the sunlight, the experts said.

When gazing the solar eclipse, viewers should not directly watch for more than one minute. It would be best to take a 30-second break after viewing for 10 seconds, they suggested.

Other agencies and organizations like Taipei Astronomical Museum (TAM), National Tsinghua University (NTHU) in northern Hsinchu, National Chenkung University in southern Tainan, and National Dong Hwa University in eastern Hualien will also provide direct broadcasts.

Their Web sites include www.tam.gov.tw/ and mms://broadcast.cc.nthu.edu.tw/live.

Other recommended live Web casts are available at sites like www.live-eclipse.org and www.atlaspost.com/2009tse.

As part of the Model Solar Car Challenge, middle school students' model solar cars were judged on design.

About Solar Sprint: The Model Solar Car Challenge is designed to inspire students to apply science and engineering principles to real-world applications. Teams used parts from a model solar cell car kit to build their vehicles. The cars, guided by wires running the length of the 10 meter course, were raced in heats until the top-performing cars were determined. In addition to prizes for the top-performing teams, prizes were awarded for team with the best design and best working knowledge of the principles for using solar cells to power model vehicles.

The car competition required students to use applied science, and engineering skills to meet technical challenges comparable to those that scientists and engineers face to provide a lightweight, functional vehicle with an efficient powertrain, optimal gearing, minimal friction, and excellent performance. Developing a successful design requires experimentation, teamwork, and organization.

The Solar Sprint is sponsored by Argonne National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Society of Automotive Engineers and CNH Corp.
