This Solar array sits on Solar Hill in Brattleboro, Vermont. The hill, also called Harris Hill, is capped by the Solar Hill mansion. The property was reportedly the site of a Pleistocene mammoth tusk discovery in September 1865 on what was then known as "Blake's pasture". The hill is underlain by white quartz intrusions in a blue limestone. The solar panels sit on the north of side of Western Avenue.

Needing a solar (photovoltaic) cell quickly for a project, I bought a cheap (£1) calculator with the solar cell clearly visible on the front.
When I took it apart, however, something was wrong: there were no wires leading fom the cell. Prising a black backing plate off revealed that the 'cell' was in fact a shiny transparent piece of plastic about an inch long with maroon/brown blocks printed on the back, with gaps left between them specifically to simulate the appearance of a real solar cell.
I wasn't quite sure whether to laugh or be annoyed. Why would a company bother to design and manufacture the fake solar cell? With calculators selling for £1 each it's surely unlikely that deceiving the customer in this way would make much difference to sales... so really, why did they bother?
Was it a conscious decision - "we can charge more for this if people think it's solar-powered"? Or was it just that other calculators have them so it was thought that this one ought to, even though it was fake?
This - www.alibaba.com/catalog/11270592/Desktop_Calculators_Stoc... - looks to be the same or a very similar model, with the text expressly describing the "dummy solar" as if it is a feature.
(And yeah, when I actually looked more closely at the box the calculator came in - after taking it apart - I did see the "Solar cell are dummy & only for decoration" text.)

The project is a 4.5 kw solar array and carport, combining the two functions in one. There was a need for three covered parking spaces as protection from the harsh summer heat. Simply placing the panels on the roof would also have caused complications with roof maintenance over the years. With the combined solution, we chose the Sanyo PV panels, which are translucent, providing a beautiful pattern and filtered light below. The main structure was welded in a metal shop and lifted into place, with the secondary structure welded on after. This process was the fastest, and by far most precise way of assemblage. The whole project was constructed and wired in two weeks, minus painting and tree trimming.

The National Park Service installed (3) huge banks of solar panels to provide green energy to the North Manitou Island National Park. The solar panels charge batteries that provide electricity to the entire village area. In the Fall, when the requirements are higher, a supplemental generator is run on occasion.
Now all we need is a little sun!!!

Invest in a solar PV system for your home and you’ll see the difference immediately. Even on a cloudy day, you’ll be producing your own electricity. A government-backed scheme will pay you, tax free, for 25 years for all of the electricity that you produce from your solar panels.

This is a real image of a typical solar flare from our sun, from September 2005, captured in the X-ray waveband by NASA's TRACE satellite.
Note the bright magnetic loops of matter. The twisting and reconnecting of these loops initiate the flare.
The flare involves a shower of electrons raining down from the corona onto the photosphere, heating the coronal gas to temperatures usually encountered only deep inside the sun. Scientists think that the twisting and breaking of magnetic field lines lacing through the corona generate the particle acceleration and flaring.

For this Solar Paper print I printed the digital negative with a the clarity slider in Lightroom set far higher than I normally would. (The clarity slider was set to about 60.) This technique makes a real difference... I think these last two prints are the first ones which were reasonably satisfying. I think I'm on root to making some good Solar Paper prints now! (The exposure was about 1 hour and 10-20 minues, and again these print have had no contrast or brightness adjustments.)
Solar panels are quickly becoming an attractive alternative to using traditional energy sources such as electricity produced from coal or oil. Solar rays can easily be converted into energy using solar panels. Today's solar energy systems allow consumers to store energy that their panels collect in excess of what they need, and they can even sell the energy back to the grid if it's more than what is needed.
Solar panels can be expensive and it's often difficult for businesses or homeowners to recoup their initial investment if they don't use a lot of energy or they move after installing the panels. However, if installed at the outset of development, solar energy systems can be rather cost-effective.
This is one important area of environmental planning where planners can contribute to creating new incentives for the use of solar panels in new development.

(UPDATE: Make sure there is a good half inch of slop in one set of holes through the 2x4 frame. Otherwise when the copper shrinks in cold weather it will contact the hole, and pull the copper tubing out of the header)
Solar Panel core with 0.005 inch thick copper sheeting soldered to it. I took 2.5 pounds of solder to solder the entire copper sheet to the tubes. Note how the copper rippled when being soldered. Does not seem to bother the panels ability. This panel was painted with Rustolium High Heat paint, which is used for grills, and requires no primer.
it seems suddenly these small solar panels have been installed everywhere in the last year or so. my understanding is they can generate about 40W and cost about $200. the average electricity cost in the U.S. is 12¢ / kWh, or $0.00012 / Wh. assuming there are 8 hours of sunshine per day, it would take 14 years to break even. does that make sense economically?
