MISSISSIPPI COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE HAS PASSIVE-SOLAR ARCHITECTURE AND ACTIVE SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM.
THE COLLEGE IS GOING TO USE A CONCENTRATING PHOTOVOLTAIC COLLECTOR SYSTEM TO PROVIDE BOTH ELECTRICITY AND THERMAL HEAT. BECAUSE THE CONCENTRATED SUNLIGHT RAISES THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SOLAR CELLS, A FLUID MUST BE USED TO COOL THE CELLS TO KEEP THEM OPERATING EFFICIENTLY. HEAT FROM THE FLUID WILL BE RELEASED IN A HEAT EXCHANGER AND USED TO AS- SIST IN HEATING THE CLASSROOMS. TO COMPLEMENT THE PV SYSTEM, THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN OF THE BUILDINGS WILL EMPLOY SUCH ENERGY CONSERVING MEASURES AS SOUTH-FACING ORIENTATION,NATURAL VENTILATION, SHADING DEVICES, DAY LIGHTING, INSULATION, THERMAL MASS, AND AN OVERALL ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.THE SCHOOL BEGAN ENROLLING STUDENTS IN THE FALL OF 1980.

This nudibranch (Phyllodesmium longicirra) is known as the "solar powered" nudibranch. This remarkable slug is able to ingest green algae without completely digesting it. The chloroplasts (intracellular organelles which conduct photosynthesis) are retained and stored in the spots on the cerata. These "power plants" continue producing sugars which the nudibranch is able to use. It is one of the largest nudibranches i have ever seen, and apparently not entirely common.
Brookhaven National Laboratory scientist examining a vial containing a specialized catalyst designed to help convert solar energy into fuel.
Producing clean-burning hydrogen fuel from just sunlight and water requires custom-built catalysts for water oxidation-the part of the water-splitting process that generates oxygen atoms. A tiny amount of the solid catalyst, developed in collaboration with the University of Houston, dissolves and turns the water that lovely shade of blue.

PNNL’s thermochemical conversion device is installed in front of a concentrating solar power dish. The device converts natural gas into the more energy-rich fuel syngas, which power plants can burn to use less fuel and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Consumers Energy broke ground on a new community solar project at Grand Valley State University on Oct. 2, 2015. The artist's rendering here shows the project, part of Consumers Energy's Solar Gardens program.
Needing a solar (photovoltaic) cell quickly for a project, I bought a cheap (£1) calculator with the solar cell clearly visible on the front.
When I took it apart, however, something was wrong: there were no wires leading fom the cell. Prising a black backing plate off revealed that the 'cell' was in fact a shiny transparent piece of plastic about an inch long with maroon/brown blocks printed on the back, with gaps left between them specifically to simulate the appearance of a real solar cell.
I wasn't quite sure whether to laugh or be annoyed. Why would a company bother to design and manufacture the fake solar cell? With calculators selling for £1 each it's surely unlikely that deceiving the customer in this way would make much difference to sales... so really, why did they bother?
Was it a conscious decision - "we can charge more for this if people think it's solar-powered"? Or was it just that other calculators have them so it was thought that this one ought to, even though it was fake?
This - www.alibaba.com/catalog/11270592/Desktop_Calculators_Stoc... - looks to be the same or a very similar model, with the text expressly describing the "dummy solar" as if it is a feature.
(And yeah, when I actually looked more closely at the box the calculator came in - after taking it apart - I did see the "Solar cell are dummy & only for decoration" text.)

These panels were installed today (04/08/2010) on our house in Indooroopilly, Brisbane, Australia. Apparently the angle isn't optimal so we won't quite get as much power out of it as you might otherwise, but it will still do 'it's little bit' for the environment.
And our electricity bill. Hopefully.
For the record - this is Origin Energy's 1.5KW system. Shade and angles mean you don't quite get all of that, in our current circumstance.

OVERALL VIEW OF THE PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER PLANT AT THE PHOENIX AIRPORT.
THE PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM BEING BUILT AT SKY HARBOR INTER- NATIONAL AIRPORT, PHOENIX, AZ, WILL BE ONE OF THE LARGEST SOLAR CELL POWER PLANTS CONNECTED TO A UTILITY GRID. BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT AVAILABLE IN THE PHOENIX AREA, THE EXPERIMENTAL PLANT IS EXPECTED TO SUPPLY UP TO 440,000 KILOWATT-HOURS OF ENERGY ANNUALLY. THE SYSTEM HAS A TOTAL OF 80 PHOTOVOLTAIC CONCENTRATION ARRAYS WITH 34 PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULE/HEAT ASSEMBLIES IN EACH ARRAY. EACH MODULE/HEAT ASSEMBLY CONTAINS 8 SOLAR CELLS MOUNTED IN 2 HOUSINGS WITH 4 CIRCULAR FRESNEL-LENS PATTERNS PER HOUSING. THE 42 FEET BY 9 FEET SUN-TRACKING ARRAYS ARE MOUNTED ON A CONCRETE PEDESTAL FIVE FEET ABOVE GROUND. THIS SYSTEM WILL PRODUCE DIRECT CURRENT ELECTRICITY THAT WILL BE INVERTED TO ALTERNATING CURRENT ELECTRICITY BEFORE ENTERING THE UTILITY GRID.

Solar Impulse 2, piloted by Bertrand Piccard, arrives over San Francisco on April 23, 2016 on its way towards circumnavigating the globe using only solar power.
Solar Energy Panels are photovoltaic devices usually made up of semiconductor silicon and they are Renewable Energy Resources of which they used to produce electricity from direct sunlight.

In the Solar Café you can choose between sitting in the greenhouse or in the building with solar cells on the roof. The black squares in the glass are parts in a photovoltaic system (solar cells) that produces electricity and yet you have enough light for the plants inside the greenhouse. Solar cells can convert more energy when the sun is high in the sky and less in cloudy conditions or when the sun is low. Building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) will increasingly influence our built environment, roofs, walls, windows and so on.

The McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope is the largest solar instrument in the world. This is also the world's largest unobstructed aperture optical telescope, with a diameter of 1.6 meters. Located on Kitt Peak in southern Arizona.
The structure includes a tower nearly 100 feet in height from which a shaft slants two hundred feet to the ground. The shaft continues into the mountain, forming an underground tunnel where the sun is viewed at the prime focus. A 3-mirror heliostat collects light and directs it down the tunnel. Permanent instruments include a dual grating spectrograph capable of extended wavelength coverage (0.3-12 microns), a 1-meter Fourier Transform Spectrometer for both solar and laboratory analysis, and a high-dispersion stellar spectrometer.
This photo is the 3-mirror heliostat viewed from ground level looking up the shaft.
Invest in a solar PV system for your home and you’ll see the difference immediately. Even on a cloudy day, you’ll be producing your own electricity. A government-backed scheme will pay you, tax free, for 25 years for all of the electricity that you produce from your solar panels.
