Sometimes referred to as the 130 ton hog, "The locomotive's diesel-electric power plant is 3,000 horsepower (a typical automobile is about 130 horsepower). The train's power plant is as big as a school bus." I read they are $2 million each

Solar energy systems provide power in even the most remote rural areas in India. The systems are installed and maintained by people from the local community trained by the Barefoot College.

This nudibranch (Phyllodesmium longicirra) is known as the "solar powered" nudibranch. This remarkable slug is able to ingest green algae without completely digesting it. The chloroplasts (intracellular organelles which conduct photosynthesis) are retained and stored in the spots on the cerata. These "power plants" continue producing sugars which the nudibranch is able to use. It is one of the largest nudibranches i have ever seen, and apparently not entirely common.

The top of this sea-going vessel is covered with black solar panels, which power the entire boat. The only gasoline on-board goes to powering their oven. When fully charged the solar panels supply lithium-ion batteries with 72 hours of continuous power.

WORKERS INSTALLING MIRRORED PARABOLIC TROUGH COLLECTORS.

Workers construct one of a dozen thermos like molten salt tanks at Abengoa's Solana Plant. Thermal storage will provide up to 6 hours of dispatchable energy to be used after sunset of if cloudy. The molten salt will generate electricity with conventional steam turbines. Solana is a 280 megawatt utility scale solar power plant (CSP) under construction in Gila Bend, Arizona, USA. When finished it will generate 280MW's providing over 70,000 Arizona homes with clean, sustainable power.

Needing a solar (photovoltaic) cell quickly for a project, I bought a cheap (£1) calculator with the solar cell clearly visible on the front.

When I took it apart, however, something was wrong: there were no wires leading fom the cell. Prising a black backing plate off revealed that the 'cell' was in fact a shiny transparent piece of plastic about an inch long with maroon/brown blocks printed on the back, with gaps left between them specifically to simulate the appearance of a real solar cell.

I wasn't quite sure whether to laugh or be annoyed. Why would a company bother to design and manufacture the fake solar cell? With calculators selling for £1 each it's surely unlikely that deceiving the customer in this way would make much difference to sales... so really, why did they bother?

Was it a conscious decision - "we can charge more for this if people think it's solar-powered"? Or was it just that other calculators have them so it was thought that this one ought to, even though it was fake?

This - www.alibaba.com/catalog/11270592/Desktop_Calculators_Stoc... - looks to be the same or a very similar model, with the text expressly describing the "dummy solar" as if it is a feature.

(And yeah, when I actually looked more closely at the box the calculator came in - after taking it apart - I did see the "Solar cell are dummy & only for decoration" text.)

DESIGN OF THE BUILDING ALLOWS INDIRECT LIGHTING WITH SHADING.

THE COLLEGE IS GOING TO USE A CONCENTRATING PHOTOVOLTAIC COLLECTOR SYSTEM TO PROVIDE BOTH ELECTRICITY AND THERMAL HEAT. BECAUSE THE CONCENTRATED SUNLIGHT RAISES THE TEMPERA-TURE OF THE SOLAR CELLS, A FLUID MUST BE USED TO COOL THE CELLS TO KEEP THEM OPERATING EFFICIENTLY. HEAT FROM THE FLUID WILL BE RELEASED IN A HEAT EXCHANGER AND USED TO ASSIST IN HEATING THE CLASSROOMS. TO COMPLEMENT THE PV SYSTEM, THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN OF THE BUILDINGS WILL EMPLOY SUCH ENERGY CONSERVING MEASURES AS SOUTH-FACING ORIENTATION,NATURAL VENTILATION, SHADING DEVICES, DAY LIGHTING, INSULATION, THERMAL MASS, AND AN OVERALL ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.THE SCHOOL BEGAN ENROLLING STUDENTS IN THE FALL OF 1980.

This Solar array sits on Solar Hill in Brattleboro, Vermont. The hill, also called Harris Hill, is capped by the Solar Hill mansion. The property was reportedly the site of a Pleistocene mammoth tusk discovery in September 1865 on what was then known as "Blake's pasture". The hill is underlain by white quartz intrusions in a blue limestone. The solar panels sit on the north of side of Western Avenue.

These panels were installed today (04/08/2010) on our house in Indooroopilly, Brisbane, Australia. Apparently the angle isn't optimal so we won't quite get as much power out of it as you might otherwise, but it will still do 'it's little bit' for the environment.

And our electricity bill. Hopefully.

For the record - this is Origin Energy's 1.5KW system. Shade and angles mean you don't quite get all of that, in our current circumstance.

An "Exposition Park" needs to be about emerging technologies -- not just a museum of past discoveries. CHIP carries on this tradition, and should be a permanent fixture on the campus. Tucked away behind the California Science Museum, this temporary exhibit was a delightful find. Although it's small, It's very livable. Well done!

__________

Architecturally, the crown jewel of Exposition Park is the 1913 Natural History Museum (renamed the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History), designed by the prominent team of Frank Hudson and William Munsell. The Natural History Museum is mostly Beaux Arts, capped by a large dome of stained glass, supported by marble pillars. The building accents are Romanesque and Spanish Plateresque.

The Sunken Garden (renamed the Rose Garden in the 1920's) is the park's other National Register site. There are more than 20,000 rose bushes, with more than 200 varieties. The Rose Garden, with the Natural History Museum in the background has been captured in numerous films and TV shows, most recently featured as the home of the "Jeffferson Institute" on the TV crime drama Bones. The park's past is checkered. Originally it was a vanue for horse, camel, dog, and later automobile racing; it also reportedly housed the city's longest bar and "one of its most stylish brothels."

Also lining the Rose Garden are other architectural treasures. The Beaux Arts/Classical Exposition Building (renamed the California Science Center) runs parallel to the garden, and opposite the Natural History Museum is the Beaux Arts/Egyptian Revival Armory Building (Now the Science Center School and Amgen Center for Science Learning. Next to the Armory Building is the 1984 Frank O Gehry and Associatiates California Aerospace Museum. Elsewhere in the park is The Museum of African-American History, designed in 1984 by Jack Haywood and Vincent J Proby. The Memorial Coliseum was designed by John and Donald Parkinson.

Exposition park holds the distinction of the only venue in the world to host two olympic summer games (X and XXIII) and two Superbowls (I and VII). During the 1990's the park's popularity decreased and it was possible to spend time in the Rose Garden and almost not see another person. Today the park has regained its popularity.

__________

The park is public space owned by the state of California, whose major cultural facilities mentioned above are operated by both the state and Los Angeles County. The 160-acre (0.65 km2) site served as an agricultural fairground from 1872 to 1910 (hence its original name Agricultural Park). Farmers sold their harvests on the grounds, while horses, dogs, and even camels competed along a racetrack where the rose garden now blooms.

In 1880, John Edward, Ozro Childs, and former Governor Downey persuaded the State of California to purchase 160 acres (0.65 km2) in Los Angeles to foster agriculture in the Southland. Soon after USC was built in 1880, the city's most influential families moved into the neighborhood, but did not appreciate the racing and the gambling that came with it. As a result, the rose garden replaced the racetrack, and the park became what it is now with its grand museums.
