Female polar bear (Ursus maritimus) "Tatqiq" enjoying a healthy between-meal snack of cantelope and other produce.
On March 30, 2001 a 10-pound little Tatqiq arrived in San Diego with her brother after loosing their mom to a hunter on the pack ice of the southern Beaufort Sea on the north coast of Alaska. She is now almost 19 years old and has grown into a ~ 600lb beauty.
She lives in Polar Bear Plunge at the San Diego Zoo with her litter mate brother, "Kalluk" and an unrelated female, "Chinook".
Conservation status: Vulnerable.
