Lenox Lounge in Harlem was founded in 1939 by the Greco family. It was named for its location on Lenox Avenue in #Harlem. Billie Holiday, John Coltrane and Miles Davis performed in this iconic #jazz club. Alvin Reed purchased the lounge in 1988 and restored much of its original #ArtDeco interior including the famous "Zebra Room" where live music 🎶 was played nightly. Sadly, #LenoxLounge was forced to close in 2012 after the rent was increased from $10,000 to $20,000 a month. Alvin Reed took the original #neonsign and much of the interior in hopes that he could reopen the club at another location but to this date, Lenox Lounge has not reopened. Lanza's Restaurant was established in 1904 by Michele Lanza. Lanza's is reported to have been a favorite #Italian 🇮🇹 restaurant of the Genovese, Bonanno and Gambino crime families. 🍝 In 1993, Woody Allen used the restaurant to film a scene for his movie "Manhattan Murder Mystery. We live its #vintage stained glass windows and #sign. Sadly, the restaurant has been closed for a while and it's status is uncertain. We love the vernacular #typography on this #storefront signage as well as all the colorful bolts of fabrics stacked up in the window. Even the light green fire escape contrasted against the dark red brick of the building caught our eye. #Analog photo from 2006 appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". #signgeeks #signsofgrime #type #typevstime #fontastic #ig_signage #chinatown #everything_signage #ig_great_shots_nyc #signcollective #dailytype #ig_nycity #popyacolour

Here's another motel that was recently demolished, just to put up another motel. Also, my Dad was living here when he started dating my Mom. Hmm, so maybe it's a good thing this place has been obliterated.

This Washington Heights restaurant was founded in 1968 and specialized in #friedchicken with its special mix of "Spanish" spices and seasonings. We love its #signage with its mix of #script and sans serif #font and the little cowboy chick 🐥 with a holster, holding a pop gun firing out the word "Fried"! Photo and full text appear in our book "Store Front II-A History Preserved". #type #typography #typevstime #signgeeks #dailytype #signcollective #ig_signage #everything_signage #lettering

In honor of #memorialday 🇺🇸 yesterday we are posting our photo of the former Navy Yard Cocktail Lounge ⚓️ in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. This #divebar was in business from 1907 to 2010. Steve Frankel, who owned the business since 1999, lost his lease when the building was sold to a developer. The #cocktail 🍸lounge originally served the tens of thousands of Brooklyn Navy Yard personnel who worked in the shipbuilding industry, and later catered to the workers in the many industrial businesses and film and television studios, which have rented spaces at the revitalized Navy Yard industrial park. Photo from 2008 appears in our recently published book, "Store Front II- A History Preserved". #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork #signgeeks #tv_retro #tv_typography #jj_texttypographical #memorialdayweekend #signcollective #typevstime #jj_doorsandwindows#myfeatureshoot #Mashpics #signofgrime

Guzman Grocery in Brooklyn is a classic New York ‪#‎bodega‬. We love its ‪#‎handpainted‬ ‪#‎signage‬ and colorful array of products in its window displays. There used to be hundreds of old bodegas in many neighborhoods of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and the Lower East Side and Harlem but they have been rapidly disappearing in the face of modernization and ‪#‎gentrification‬. ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎disappearingfaceofnewyork‬ ‪#‎jj_texttypographical‬ ‪#‎tv_retro‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎tv_retrotype‬ ‪#‎everything_signage‬ ‪#‎signcollective‬ ‪#‎myfeatureshoot‬ ‪#‎reportagespotlight‬ ‪#‎gas_food_lodging‬

Henderson, NV - June 2017

This long sign is tricky to get all into one shot! I really like how the "Sea-Hi" and "Chinese" are stylized and "Famous" and "Food" aren't. And that neon dragon 'S' is awesome, don't you think?

UPDATE: GONE

Sad news today out of California: Anaheim's beloved La Palma Chicken Pie Shop is being turned into a chinese food restaurant. If you're near here and haven't yet shot their wonderful signage, get there asap. UPDATE: The sign has been saved by MONA (Museum of Neon Art)!! It's now part of their collection :-)

We always love finding old Coca-Cola #signage as it takes us right back to the time when the company gave these signs away for free to businesses that sold their product. All the small businesses had to do was add their own copy, usually in the form of enamel #lettering that was also supplied by #cocacola. #signgeeks #tv_retrotype #jj_texttypographical #signcollective #typevstime #ipulledoverforthis #gas_food_lodging #trb_ipoft_signs #guardiancities #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork #vintage #signsofgrime #myfeatureshoot #filthyfacades

To celebrate the holidays we are releasing 11x14 inch signed prints of Bright Food Shop for $99 with free shipping to anywhere in the continental U.S. DM or email us at jandkphoto@att.net to send payment via PayPal or Venmo.

Bright Food Shop in Chelsea was in business from 1938-2007. Upon closing, the original #neon sign which wrapped around the corner, was carefully removed and stored by the owners. Earlier this year, they reached out to us to let us know that they donated their #neonsign to the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. @americansignmuseum. We are so happy to hear that such a beautiful #sign was saved and can now be seen again! #signage. #signgeeks #typevstime #storefront #jj_texttypographical #signcollective #fontastic #typography #type #dailytype #everything_signage #ig_signage

Businesses featuring southwestern themes like this used to be ubiqutious throughout Arizona. Today, much of Arizona's cityscapes are comprised of modern American monoculture. I apprediciate Kachina's 60+ year old brand asthetic upholding

a bit of desert culture and nostalgia. Don't ever change that sign!

This is sad news for the independent newsstand as print sales continue to shrink and they are forced to rely on sales of other items. We love this #vintage news stand that also advertises that it sells comics, chips, candies 🍭 and magazines (Spanish) and even Kodacolor VR-G. #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork #signgeeks #everything_signage #signcollective #signsofgrime #ig_signage #typography #typevstime #dailytype
