🍳🍔 Empire Diner is one of the last free-standing diners left in Manhattan and is located inside a 1946 Fodero Dining Car. It closed in 2015, after a second failed attempt to revive it. This photo was taken in 2009 before the #miniature stainless steel stylized #Empire State Building @empirestatebldg replica was removed from its roof. Photo and full interview with former owner Carolyn Benitez appear in our book "New York Nights". #storefront #tv_retrotype #jj_texttypographical #signgeeks #typevstime #signcollective #gas_food_lodging #ipulledoverforthis #igs_nyc #guardiancities #reportagespotlight #myfeatureshoot

It's certainly not an old, vintage sign, but I loved the happy little french fry guy with his crown :-)

Saint John, NB

Dublin House is a family-owned #Irish #pub which has been in business since 1921. It was founded by John Carway, an Irish immigrant from Dublin who rented the space during Prohibition. We absolutely love its #vintage #neonsign in the shape of a #harp and its letters that say "TAP ROOM" and "BAR" which blink on and off. The bartender, Mr. Daly told us that the reason the #neon #sign has the words "tap room" is that Dublin House was one of the first #bars to offer #beer on tap. Full interview with Mr. Daly and nighttime photo of entire #storefront with neon #signage appear in our book "New York Nights". #trb_ipoft_signs #tv_retro #tv_typography #tv_retrotype #bar #neongeeks #signgeeks #signcollective #everything_signage #foundtype #gas_food_lodging #ipulledoverforthis

Parkside Candies, on Main Street in Buffalo NY, is an absolute vintage gem -- inside and out.

Photographed with my iPhone using the Toy Camera app.

I shot this back in 2012 and it's been lurking here in my Flickr account; I just discovered I had it marked "private".

Also, sadly, I just discovered it permanently closed in 2017.

It specializes in independent films and is widely recognized as the most successful art house 🎬 in the United States. Photo from 2011 appears in our book "New York Nights". #neon #neonsign #signgeeks #signcollective #indiefilm #cinematreasures

Golden Rule Liquors in the West Village was established in 1934 after the national Prohibition of alcohol ended in the United States. The gorgeous ‪#‎neonsign‬ is original and the owner told us that it was installed in 1934. We also love its beautiful window display and the ‪#‎handpainted‬ ‪#‎signage‬ in their window. Photo from 2010 and full interview appear in our newly released book "Store Front II-A History Preserved". To see and hear more about amazing small ‪#‎momandpop‬ stores like this please join us for a free "Store Front II-A History Preserved" book discussion/slide-show of photographs on Tuesday April 19th at the Sixth Street Community Center from 6:30-8:00 pm, 638 East 6th Street between Avenue B and Avenue C. The event is sponsored by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP). The event is free but to attend please RSVP via email to: RSVP@GVSHP.org or call (212)475-9585 x35 ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎type‬ ‪#‎typevstime‬ ‪#‎typography‬ ‪#‎trb_ipoft_signs‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎neongeeks‬ ‪#‎tv_retrotype‬ ‪#‎tv_typography‬ ‪#‎jj_texttypographical‬ ‪#‎jj_doorsandwindows‬

This Polish butcher specialized in #homemade kielbasy, which was nicely displayed using meat hooks running across the interior window. We not only loved the colorful #signage this #storefront had with an incredible variety of #fonts but also the aroma of the smoked kielbasa that you encountered as soon as you walked by. #Analog Photo from 2004 appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". #typography #signgeeks #dailytype #type #signcollective #everything_signage #ig_signage #fontastic #disappearingfaceofnewyork

Sadly, long gone. ....was on Kingston Road in east-end Toronto. We used to get take out there when we lived on Beech.

Cool little sign with a star... and hidden arrow.

"This alley was featured on History Channel’s 'American Restoration Episode: Pests and Pins'.

Still in its original location, it first opened in 1947. It is an 8 lane center that uses over lane ball returns and its original wooden bench seats.

Boulder Bowl is also mentioned in the book 'Vanishing Alleys,' a book about the small mom-and-pop bowling centers that are rapidly missing from the bowling landscape." -BowlingAlleysUSA.com

So yesterday we set out to go to the fair. We arrived early afternoon only to discover that it wasn't open! We had a Walley World day!

(I did wander around the perimeter, taking photographs with my camera and my iPhone -- this was shot using the Hipstamatic app -- so it certainly wasn't a wasted trip and actually makes for a funny story!)

S&S Diner on the edge of the #Wynwood Arts District in Miami was established in 1938. The #diner had a horseshoe-shaped counter with stool seating that held only 18 people. There were no private tables or booths and was cash only serving just breakfast ☕️🍳 or lunch 🍔🍟. Unfortunately the #vintage diner was forced to close in 2016 after the land it is located on was sold for $33 million to a real estate developer. Sadly another victim of this neighborhood's #gentrifcation. #miami #signgeeks #tv_retrotype #typography #dailytype #storefront #typevstime #gas_food_lodging #ipulledoverforthis #signcollective #signage

Mitchell's Wines & Liquors on the Upper West Side is sadly removing their #vintage #neonsign. We loved this red channel #lettering beauty with its blue dot in the center of #wines and #Liquors. The letters uniquely are placed on a black Carrara-pigmented glass background. The owner is renovating the entire #storefront and is not replacing the 1946 #neon. We hope that it will be saved!
