Saw this theater on a drive down to Kansas City earlier this year in March. Resolved to come back and shoot it at twilight/dusk/blue hour when it was lit up. I was glad to see that all the letters were lit and the sign appeared to be in fine order. One more summer goal completed.
We are releasing 11x14 inch signed prints of this #storefront for $99 including shipping to anywhere in the continental U.S. Please DM or email us at jandkphoto@att.net to order. Ideal Dinettes was founded in 1953 and specialized in kitchen dinette sets, catering to the many large Italian families living in the neighborhood. Sadly it closed in 2008 as the 2nd generation owners decided to retire and the neighborhood began to gentrify with younger, single people moving into the area. Before the shop closed, the owner called us to ask if we wanted to keep the #neon stainless steel #signage as she knew we were very fond of it, but since the #neonsign was so large (and heavy) and we live in a studio apartment, we could not take it and it ended up in a dumpster. #signgeeks #dailytype #typography #typevstime #dailytype #signcollective #bushwick #everything_signage #ig_signage #type #script #lettering
The Park Theatre was built in 1948 and operated until 1989; after that time it no longer showed movies and instead was used as an event venue ... until a few years ago, when it closed up completely. It's still for sale if anyone wants to buy it!

Update: Gone; it's been stripped of its neon and bulbs and painted over for, I think, a taco stand.
At one time this place was known as Mom's Peppermill Restaurant. The arm on the peppermill used to turn, and the lights would blink like pepper was sprinkling out. The exit 8 at the top spun as well.
I love the neon crown :-) We drove by here recently and this restaurant is still closed, although the sign (and building) are still there. Newcastle, ON

Bleecker Bob's Records was founded by Bob Plotnick in 1967 on Bleecker Street. This #recordstore was one of the first places in the late 1970s to sell albums by #punk bands. Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin's guitarist 🎸and Frank Zappa both occasionally tended the register back in the day. 🎧Photo from 2011 and interview appears in our book "New York Nights". #storefront #neon #vinyl #vinylcommunity #signgeeks #recordplayer #disappearingfaceofnewyork
Jay Dee Bakery in Forest Hills, Queens was open for nearly 60 years before it closed in 2009. We loved its #ArtDeco #storefront which had an amazing reverse channel #neonsign with a unique #font. We also loved the Ravenna green mosaic columns surrounding the windows which had an orange and red vertical swirl pattern. Jay Dee Bakery was known for its kosher cookies including rainbow 🌈 and cherry cookies as well as their classic black and white cookie. While we always try to support and document small mom-and-pop stores, we are also huge fans of typography and ‪#‎neon‬... ‪#‎neonsign‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎neongeeks‬ ‪#‎vintage‬
Antelis Pharmacy in Midwood, Brooklyn is sadly no longer operating out of this ‪#‎storefront‬. We loved its ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎sign‬ with its ‪#‎script‬ lettering which was left behind when they moved further down the street. The fact that they left the ‪#‎signage‬ behind does not surprise us because all of the ‪#‎store‬ owners we have interviewed over the years have repeatedly told us that it is a "real labor of love" to maintain these ‪#‎neonsign‬ because they need constant work to fix broken transformers, fuses and other things that get broken when exposed to rain & snow. This photo taken in 2011 appears in our newly published book "Store Front II- A History Preserved". We hope that someone like @lettherebeneon saves this beauty from the dumpster! ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎type‬ ‪#‎typography‬ ‪#‎tv_typography‬ ‪#‎tv_retrotype‬ ‪#‎signcompany‬ ‪#‎fontlove‬ ‪#‎typevstime‬ ‪#‎ipulledoverforthis‬ ‪#‎jj_texttypograhical‬
Neil's Coffee Shop on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
This ‪#‎coffee‬ shop was founded in the 1950s and has been owned by the same extended family since 1980. The overhanging ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎sign‬ is original and the family lovingly maintains it. The second-generation owner Chris Kaloudis told us that they have many long time customers who come in on a regular basis and who have "grown up" with the ‪#‎restaurant‬. Photo from 2009 appears in our book "New York Nights" along with a full interview with owner Chris. ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎coffeetime‬ ‪#‎coffeeshop‬ ‪#‎neonsign‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎neongeeks‬

Patsy's Italian Restaurant on West 56th Street by Broadway was founded by Pasquale "Patsy" Scognamillo in 1944. It is now being run by the third-generation of the family and they continue to specialize in authentic ‪#‎Italian‬ cuisine. Patsy's was Frank Sinatra's favorite restaurant and he often fined there after recording at his nearby studio. Their gorgeous ‪#‎script‬ ‪#‎neonsign‬ is original and can be seen glowing from Broadway. Photo is from 2009 and appears in our new book "Store Front II - A History Preserved" along with full interview with the 3rd-generation co-owner. ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎food‬ ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎neongeeks‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎signage‬ ‪#‎typography‬
When we crossed from New Brunswick into Maine, where US 1 starts in Fort Kent, we kept our eyes peeled for the first neon as we began our southbound journey on Route 1. This neon Open arrow sign was the first we spied, making it the first neon on US 1 .... that we could see. We don't think we missed any though -- we were on pretty high alert. This was the first one.

People often ask us what #storefront that we have photographed is our favorite. It's a very difficult question for us to answer because we have such a personal connection to many of the places especially because we often spend hours with the owners asking them questions about the history of their store. As huge fans of #typography and #lettering one of our favorites definitely is Marie's. We love the #script and the simple black and white #type used in the diamonds. Photo from 2004 appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". Please let us know why some of the storefronts we have posted on our feed are your favorites. #disappearingfaceofnewyork #dailytype #fontastic #signgeeks #everything_signage #signcollective #typevstime
