Mr. Figaro Unisex Hairstyling in Sheepshead Bay was established in 1977 by Jerry May aka Mr. Figaro. Mr. May was born in Russia in 1927 into a family of barbers and not only learned to cut #hair but also to sing #opera at a young age. He told us that he "took the name Mr. Figaro after the original singing #barber from Rossini's 1816 comic opera." We love the #handpainted #signage 💈✂️as well as all of the photos of Mr. Figaro and his customers in the windows. SO green! I did zero colour adjustments to the RAW file with this photo.....it was so green and colourful and fresh in front of this motel. I'm not sure what kind of tree that is, but it's beautiful.
We stopped because I liked the arrow (almost lost in the tree) and the little starbursts by "color tv" -- and I'm intrigued that they used the US spelling of that, instead of Canadian.

Snack Dragon on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side closed over the winter. They served great #tacos for a good price. Their other location on East 3rd Street closed in November 2014 after the owner tripled the rent on the small 100 square-foot space to $3,900 a month. We loved their unique #sign with all of its quirky #typography.
We are leading a Store Front walking tour of the East Village and Lower East Side on Sunday, April 26th at 2pm sponsored by the Municipal Arts Society of New York. @mas_nyc The cost is $20/$15 Members. Upon closing, the original #neon sign which wrapped around the corner, was carefully removed and stored by the owners. They recently reached out to us to let us know that they donated their #neonsign to the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati.
