Normandie Bake Shop in Brooklyn had a great ‪#‎neonsign‬ complete with ‪#‎script‬ lettering that at one point must have brought in lots of customers. We could not find out much about the history of this ‪#‎bakery‬ except that it was known for its black and white ‪#‎cookies‬. We hope the relics of this great ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎sign‬ was saved. ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎disappearingfaceofnewyork‬ ‪#‎80sixd‬ ‪#‎neongeeks‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎signage‬ ‪#‎type‬ ‪#‎typography‬ ‪#‎font‬ ‪#‎fontastic‬ ‪#‎jj_texttypographical‬ ‪#‎trailblazers_urbex‬ ‪#‎tv_retrotype‬ ‪#‎foundtype‬ ‪#‎neonbulletholes‬ ‪#‎ipulledoverforthis‬ ‪#‎everything_signage‬ ‪#‎trb_ipoft_signs‬ ‪#‎tv_typography‬ ‪#‎typevstime‬

This ‪#‎diner‬ had a great ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎neonsign‬ on its roof but it was recently replaced by an LED lit plastic version. We are not sure why it was replaced but imagine it has somethings to do with the high cost of maintaining a ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎sign‬ in New York City, where it is exposed to all types of weather including blizzards and heavy rain, which typically "shorts out" a letter or two. We loved its ‪#‎script‬ and block ‪#‎lettering‬ in both blue and red colors. Photo from 2010 appears in our book "New York Nights".

This was a pleasant and surprising find, when out for a drive east of the city. Just never know what's out there!

If you're unfamiliar with B/A (now Gulf), here's a link with some history: www.britishamericanoil.ca/history.html

And, I found this link about this particular building and sign: www.oldgas.com/info/banewtonville.html

Olden Camera in Midtown closed a number of years ago but we always wondered what happened to its beautiful #vintage #neonsign. As huge #analog camera fans as well as #typography lovers we would have loved to have saved it! Although realistically it would never have fit into our East Village studio. Photo from 2004 appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork #type #typevstime #signgeeks #dailytype #signcollective #ig_signage

UPDATE: JANUARY 2017 -- THIS SIGN IS NOW GONE, REPLACED WITH A MODERN SIGN. BOO!

On a rainy, dreary March afternoon last year, as we headed north on our way home from Florida, we drove through Myrtle Beach for the first time ever. The conditions were far less than ideal and as the time ticked on, I was losing what light there was, so we just drove through and made only a few quick stops. Saw lots of neat stuff -- including this wonderful old-school Burger King sign still being used -- and look forward to returning on a nicer, brighter day.

Imperial Beef Company was founded in the 1930s and moved to this Myrtle Avenue location in 1954. At the time according to Domenick, the second-generation owner and ‪#‎butcher‬, "Bedford- Stuyvesant, Brooklyn had a lot of ‪#‎Italian‬ families and we sold specialties like homemade Italian sausages. In more recent years, we changed our offerings to include chitlings." We love this ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎signage‬ which was ‪#‎handpainted‬ on porcelain enamel tiles. Photo from 2004 and full interview appear in our book, "Store Front:The Disappearing Face of New York." ‪#‎disappearingfaceofnewyork‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎guardiancities‬ ‪#‎signcollective‬

Ghost sign upon ghost sign; Andrews, SC

Saw this theater on a drive down to Kansas City earlier this year in March. Resolved to come back and shoot it at twilight/dusk/blue hour when it was lit up. I was glad to see that all the letters were lit and the sign appeared to be in fine order. One more summer goal completed.

If you are planning on crossing the little bridge from Clair, New Brunswick, to Fort Kent, Maine, where US 1 starts, this is the last neon sign you'll see in Canada....it's across the street from the border. The sign looks great, but the business is gone.

We are releasing 11x14 inch signed prints of this #storefront for $99 including shipping to anywhere in the continental U.S. Please DM or email us at jandkphoto@att.net to order. Ideal Dinettes was founded in 1953 and specialized in kitchen dinette sets, catering to the many large Italian families living in the neighborhood. Sadly it closed in 2008 as the 2nd generation owners decided to retire and the neighborhood began to gentrify with younger, single people moving into the area. Before the shop closed, the owner called us to ask if we wanted to keep the #neon stainless steel #signage as she knew we were very fond of it, but since the #neonsign was so large (and heavy) and we live in a studio apartment, we could not take it and it ended up in a dumpster. #signgeeks #dailytype #typography #typevstime #dailytype #signcollective #bushwick #everything_signage #ig_signage #type #script #lettering

The Park Theatre was built in 1948 and operated until 1989; after that time it no longer showed movies and instead was used as an event venue ... until a few years ago, when it closed up completely. It's still for sale if anyone wants to buy it!

Update: Gone; it's been stripped of its neon and bulbs and painted over for, I think, a taco stand.
